Great idea. Huge disappointment.
By TammyA
What a disappointment this book was. The idea is good, the techniques for decoding unknown words solid enough, and there are plenty of pages using little paragraphs and stories to fill in words from a word bank as exercises to figure out the unknown words. The problem? In half the book, the words used are too easy! Seriously, a 2nd to 4th grader wouldn't know what an ambulance was? How about medicine? Another page is filled with fill in spots for house, barn, cows, horse, tractor and hay. We step up a bit with balance, register, coupon, receipt. Then more pages devoted to stuff like shadowy, shiny, fluffy. There is even a number of fill in preposition (under, downstairs, outside, etc.) and adverbs (suspiciously, steepily, neatly, anxiously).
I get the point that they used easy words to teach the strategies (6 given), but instead of an example or two of very simple words to teach the strategy concept, the book has pages. Yup pages. That means half the book is devoted to stuff most kids have figured out by 1st grade. The last half of the book adds a bit higher level vocabulary, but never in my opinion approaches a 4th grade level other than a few words scattered here and there like abhor. Only a few are something a 4th grader might not know.
I chose to keep the book as I teach afterschool ESL to kids who have vocabulary gaps and are immersed in the American school system, so need to know how to pick up contextual clues, but this will only be useful to my youngest and earliest English students. It has some useful preposition and adverb pages, which can be tricky for an ESL learner, but which would be a total disappointment for the average 2nd to 4th grade American student.
Fortunately the book is a reproducible book which allows me to copy only the pages I need for a specific student. If someone purchased this thinking it would actually help build vocabulary within contextual clues for 2nd to 4th graders, they would be sadly mistaken. The words are too easy that most students will simply quickly fill them in without ever really having to work to use the strategy.
This text should be marked K to 2nd grade at best (first half) with maybe a smattering of 3rd grade level and a word or two for 4th in the second half. Even on an ESL level, most of my students have progressed beyond the first half to simply enter the country. That means only the second half of the book is actually something that might offer words hard enough that they would need to use the strategies.

Great way to teach context clues
By Tracie Toy
I use this book with my college English as a Second Language Students. The level of English used in this book is easier for second language learners. They don't seem to mind that the book has primary illustrations.

Great Resource
By Family of 4 Fisch
I have a range of students from 5th to 8th that struggle with reading comprehension. This workbook helps break down the skills needed to help a reader find the meaning. Definitely worth the money.
