From School Library Journal
K-Gr 2–Based on the traditional English ballad, this picture book concentrates on the episode when the Sheriff of Nottingham tries to capture Robin Hood by luring him from the woods for an archery contest. The text is straightforward, making this book a good entry point into the legend for younger readers. The author maintains a lighthearted tone throughout, building anticipation for Robin's triumph, then adding a final bonus when the Merry Men give a parting gift to the Sheriff, a taunting poem. In an author's note, San Souci explains his research and how his version evolved from other sources. Lewis's watercolor paintings are in the N.C. Wyeth vein, but with a fresh, energetic interpretation. Less idealized than Wyeth's, these characters look like real men. The Sheriff, with his crownlike hat, purple robe, and haughty expression, appears rather regal, but his villain status is clear. Fans of San Souci's collection of Arthurian picture books will be pleased by his take on another classic.Lucinda Snyder Whitehurst, St. Christopher's School, Richmond, VA

From Booklist
Drawing upon the traditional British ballad of the same name rooted in the fifteenth century, San Souci retells one of Robin Hood’s most famed exploits. The dastardly sheriff of Nottingham concocts a plan to trap the outlaw and his men by holding an archery contest, knowing they can’t possibly resist a shot at winning the treasure. Robin shows up in disguise, spectacularly wins the contest, and takes home the golden arrow. Ever the playful one, he does a bit of flaunting and lobs a poem proclaiming his true identity through a window to the steaming sheriff. San Souci stays faithful to the original, almost to a fault—savvy readers may wonder how the sheriff got anywhere in life being so addle-brained he is fooled by clothing and a fake beard. But Lewis’ stately artwork brings the lushness of the forest and the dramatic resolve of the hero to life and could well make this a go-to picture book for children meeting the Merry Men for the first time. Grades 1-3. --Ian Chipman

gorgeous robin hood story for all ages
By M. Tanenbaum
Award-winning author Robert D. San Souci, perhaps best known for his retellings of traditional tales (as well as his Dared to be Scared series!) and award-winning illustrator, E. B. Lewis have brought us a gorgeous new oversized picture book based on one of the best-known super-heroes of the olden days, Robin Hood.

In this particular tale, which San Souci adapted from earlier versions (dating to the 15th century), Robin's nemesis, the Sheriff of Nottingham, comes up with what he thinks is a sure-fire method to capture Robin and his band of outlaws: an archery contest with an arrow of pure gold as the prize. Sure enough, Robin, who of course is the best archer around, can't ignore the challenge, and he and his men arrive at the contest in disguise. As expected, Robin is one of the final two archers, but no one recognizes him disguised as a one-eyed beggar. Will Robin outfox the Sheriff and collect the prize?

This lushly illustrated tale, featuring splendid watercolors of Sherwood Forest, dappled with sunlight emerging from the green trees, as well as its famous occupants, is a wonderful addition to the Robin Hood canon, and should be a popular read-aloud that adults as well as children would enjoy. For those kids who love contemporary superheroes like Iron Man and Spider Man, this story provides an ideal avenue to introduce them to one of our culture's earliest superheroes.

My son loves this book.
By Nicolitz
My 3 year old loves Robin Hood. I had ordered the original tales of Robin Hood not realizing the stories are way too mature for him . I am so happy with this purchase, the illustrations are beautiful and not violent or concerning in any way. He loves this book, and takes it to bed to look through almost every night. I strongly recommend this to introduce any child to the tales of Robin Hood.

Great introduction to Robin Hood
By Rockport Ives Family
Great introduction to Robin Hood. Nobody in the book is hurt or killed so appropriate for the very young. Large , colorful book was a big hit with my 3 year old. Robin Hood is a great alternative to the ubiquitous "super hero" clap trap.

Great Memory Songs
By R. Hagan
I love to teach with songs to help students reinforce what they are learning. I love this book because I usually have to make up my own songs for teacher history, math, or science. This book has so many great songs. However, a few of the songs I want to use are sung to a tune/song I've never heard before. The book would be even better if it came with a CD of the music sung by children.

LOVE this book!
By mother22
This book has been a gem in our homeschool curriculum. The songs cover a wide range of topics: language arts including various parts of speech, types of words, punctuation, capitalization, literary devices; social studies including ancient history, mythology, american history, the Presidents, geographical landmarks, time zones, branches of government; and Math & science including skip counting, multiplication facts, fractions, decimal points, body systems, weather, plants, birds, mammals, reptiles. There are lot of other topics I haven't mentioned too. I am familiar with most of the tunes. There are a few I didn't know, but they were very easy to look up on wikipedia and listen to the midi score. My elementary-age kids love this book and sing the songs enthusiastically! We are always able to find a song that coordinates with our topics of study, and it's a fun and memorable way to learn facts.

Helpful Tool
By Sara Urben
This is a great resource for any classroom teacher. The assessments are user-friendly and help you to quickly pinpoint reading difficulties. Unlike many other assessments, there is a comprehension piece in addition to expression and automaticity. I photocopy kids' results to share with parents; and the assessments are simple enough that parents are able to understand the results and practice specific skills with their child at home.

Why four, not five stars: They're more like five or six minute assessments once you actually write down all your notes. I've used them for awhile, and even with practice am never done in three minutes. I also wish there were more passages for each grade level. Overall though, a great book and one of my more often-used teacher resources.

A Great Resource for Intermediate Teachers and Higher
By J. Roicki
Combined with Jeni Pollack Day's Moving Forward With Literature Circles, Classroom Discussions is a terrific resource for getting students to think critically about the skills and topics they are learning. In a day and age when students are getting enough discussion at home, this is the perfect way to allow students to talk at school while focusing on the skills and curriculum. Dixie Lee Speigel's text makes it easy to take students beyond mere conversation and into a world of higher level thinking and metacognition (thinking about thinking). Discussion, combined with reading and writing, has become the heart of my classroom environment.

Although my daughter loves the show...
By J. Stout
I do NOT recommend this book. The photos are too small and fuzzy, so you don't see the design details. I remember a lot of the rooms from watching the series, and the parts of the rooms that I liked the most are not even included. The layouts in this volume are very poor compared to those in the regular Trading Spaces books that correspond to the adult show.

The text is unreadable..."Garrett's current room is way out of bounds. Definitely lacking the alley-oop to make a slam dunk of his digs (pg 30)."

The other major problem I have with this book is that it's simply not useful to kids who have a serious interest in interior design. Page 2 says that "Stuff you will not need" to do the projects in the book are "lots of time, lots of money, lots of professionals," yet most of the major design elements in the book require the use of power tools and serious carpentry. Worse yet, practical instructions on how to acheive the look are not included.

If your kids are interested in decorating, there are a lot of better books out there with better photography and how-to directions.

Great Book
By A Customer
Great book. Instead of making it just a stupid marketing gimic, they made it look really good, and it shows how you can make your own rooms. All of the rooms look great, especially the Chapter 8 Broadway and Rock and Roll rooms, those look incredible. This is a must buy for a Trading Spaces fan who wants to make their room just as good as the ones on the show.

A Waste of Money
By Bunny lovers
This book doesn't show you how to do any of the projects... Both of my kids (son and daughter) read through the book and thought how worthless. Even if you think something looks cool, it doesn't include instructions. The photo's do not show the whole room.

For example... looking at "Back in the Saddle" page 60-61, where's the bed? There isn't one. Where does she sleep? on the floor next to the horse posters and fake plastic hedges? But they made sure she has a picnic basket! And where's the plans for the stables? Even if they oncluded the plans, my teenagers could never build this stable (even if you could figure out where to put a bed)!

What a big disappointment. We wish we could return it and get our money back. You should try to check this one out at the library so you don't through away your money...it's not a keeper.

Up Before Daybreak: Cotton And People In America, by Deborah Hopkinson

In this stunning nonfiction volume, award-winning author Deborah Hopkinson weaves the stories of slaves, sharecroppers, and mill workers into a tapestry illuminating the history of cotton in America.

In UP BEFORE DAYBREAK, acclaimed author Deborah Hopkinson captures the voices of the forgotten men, women, and children who worked in the cotton industry in America over the centuries. The voices of the slaves who toiled in the fields in the South, the poor sharecroppers who barely got by, and the girls who gave their lives to the New England mills spring to life through oral histories, archival photos, and Hopkinson's engaging narrative prose style. These stories are amazing and often heartbreaking, and they are imbedded deep in our nation's history.

Starred Review. Grade 4-8–Making excellent use of primary sources (even noting when these sources may be less than accurate) and extended with black-and-white photos and period reproductions, this excellent work gives a detailed picture of the effect of cotton production on the social structure of the United States. From 1607, when the earliest English settlers arrived in Virginia, cotton was among the plants grown in colonial gardens. With the onset of the Industrial Revolution in England, the demand for it increased, and the southern colonies found it lucrative to step up production. That cotton culture was part and parcel of the slave system becomes clear in this thoughtfully composed volume. Hopkinson also considers the young women who flocked to Lowell, MA, and the surrounding area to work in the textile factories. After the Civil War, the southern economy remained dependent on cotton, trading the slave system for a sharecropping system, and moving many of the mills to the south. Following workers' histories up through the Great Depression, the final chapter discusses child labor in the past and present. This informative work extends titles such as Arthur John L'Hommedieu's From Plant to Blue Jeans (Scholastic Library, 1998). *Starred Review* Gr. 5-8. The author of Shutting Out the Sky: Life in the Tenements (2003) here explains to middle-graders how "the story of cotton . . . is like a thread that stretches far back into America's past." In unraveling that thread from the industrial revolution to the 1950s demise of the Lowell cotton mills, Hopkinson discusses the history and sociology of king cotton, frequently emphasizing the children who labored under slave masters, endured dead-end mill jobs, or helped sharecropping parents claw out a living. Stories of real people, such as mill girl Lucy Larcom who escaped the "incessant clash" of the looms to become a famous poet, sharply focus the dramatic history, as do arresting archival photos of stern youngsters manipulating hoes, cotton sags, or bobbins. Neither too long nor too dense, this won't intimidate students reluctantly tackling research projects, and teachers and children alike will welcome the concluding list of suggested readings for youth, the scholarly bibliography, and thorough endnotes. Rarely have the links between northern industry, southern agriculture, slavery, war, child labor, and poverty been so skillfully distilled for this audience. Jennifer Mattson

Starred Kirkus Review
"The voices of children weave through the story of cotton," and the story of cotton weaves through the story of our nation. Drawing on oral histories from the Federal Writers project of the 1930s and the oral-history interviews with Lowell mill workers in the 1970s and 1980s, Hopkinson makes history come alive through the voices of the people. Real people's stories are woven into a rich narrative of the history: clothmaking, the cotton gin, slavery, the Great Migration, the Great Depression and the continuing problem of child labor around the world. This volume, like the author's Shutting Out the Sky (2003), is a model of superb nonfiction writing and how to use primary sources to create engaging narratives. The prose is clear, the documentation excellent and well-selected photographs support the text beautifully. What might have been a dry topic is lively, the voices of the children vivid and personal. The author of Shutting Out the Sky: Life in the Tenements (2003) here explains to middle-graders how "the story of cotton...is like a thread that stretches far back into America's past." In unraveling that thread from the industrial revolution to the 1950s demise of the Lowell cotton mills, Hopkinson discusses the general history and sociology of king cotton, frequently emphasizing the children who labored under slave masters, endured dead-end mill jobs, or helped sharecropping parents claw a living out of uncooperative soil. Stories of real people, such as mill girl Lucy Larcom who escaped the "incessant clash" of the looms to become a famous poet, sharply focus the dramatic history, as do arresting archival photos. Portraits of stern youngsters manipulating hoes, bags, or bobbins do as much as Hopkinson's fine writing to tell "the powerful and often heartbreaking story of cotton and people in America." Neither too long nor too dense, this won't frighten students reluctantly tackling research projects, and teachers and children alike will welcome the concluding list of relevant fiction and nonfiction for youth, the scholarly bibliography, and endnotes for both quotes and selected facts. Rarely have the links between northern industry, southern agriculture, slavery, war, child labor, and poverty been so skillfully distilled for this audience. Cotton has always been vital to the U.S. economy; here Hopkinson focuses on the hard lives of the people, especially the children, who raised the crop, took it to market, and turned it into cloth. Beginning with a quick history, she continues chronologically with chapters describing the world of "king" cotton -- for slaves in southern fields and young women in northern mills (using Lowell, Massachusetts, as an example) -- before the Civil War and after, when both growth and processing became dispersed, and the factories closed. Anecdotal vignettes from oral history enliven Hopkinson's account (and the author includes a helpful reminder of the limits of this material). A generous selection of historical photographs, documents, and illustrations, undated but attributed in the captions, accompanies the text. Generous, too, is the back matter, which includes appropriate suggestions for further reading, a selected bibliography, chapter notes, more specific photo credits, and an extensive index. This history really ends in the 1950s with the closing of the last mills in Lowell, but the author brings the story of child labor up to date with a reminder that children are still employed in cotton production in other countries. If children ever give that humble plant fiber, cotton, a second thought, it's more likely in regard to their denims and khakis than to American economic and social history. Hopkinson attempts a broad overview of cotton's impact on the nation- its i

Richie's Picks: UP BEFORE DAYBREAK
By N. S.
A slave named Henry Kirk Miller was fourteen when freedom arrived with the end of the Civil War. Later he recalled how his former owner had needed money and had sold off one of Henry's sisters, taking cotton in exchange:

" 'I remember hearing them tell about the big price she brought because cotton was so high,' said Henry. 'Old mistress got 15 bales of cotton for sister...It was only a few days till freedom came and the man who had traded all them bales of cotton lost my sister, but old mistress kept the cotton.' "

I'm in touch with cotton on a daily basis. As a matter of fact, what could be closer to me? Closer than my plaid flannel boxers ("100% COTTON, Made in Bangladesh")? Closer than my Beatles Yellow Submarine Picture Book tee-shirt ("100% COTTON, Knit in U.S.A, Assembled in Honduras")? Closer than my Levi Strauss Relaxed Fit 550 Jeans (100% COTTON, Made in Mexico)? Or the soft pillow case under my head as I read this fascinating book (100% COTTON, Made in Bulgaria)? Yup, I've got some significant daily connections to cotton.

As noted by author Deborah Hopkinson, "Growing up, I never fully understood how important those old, run-down mills had been to our country's history. The evidence was right before my eyes, but I couldn't imagine the past. I couldn't see Lowell as a vibrant center of new technology or understand the forces that had left it broken and economically depressed."

Like Hopkinson's experience with Lowell, Massachusetts, I also have a bit of experience with run-down mills. In the mid-Seventies, during my years as an undergraduate student at UConn, I would frequently head down the road to the nearby mill town of Willimantic, whose nickname "Thread City" has since been memorialized by the giant spools of thread upon which the Willimantic Frog Bridge frogs sit. (Check out the bridge at [...]) My destination in Willimantic was Shaboo, a cavernous club serving up big-name live music that operated -- of course -- in an old textile factory building.

As I learned through a bit of my own searching, the Willimantic Linen Company used to be Connecticut's largest employer. At one time they produced 85,000 miles of thread each day. Its modern-era successor, the American Thread Company, still had a presence in town during my collegiate days. And as I also discovered, another of the old buildings in Willimantic, which has recently been renovated as part of the development of a modern business and technology center, was the world's first mill to be illuminated by electric lights -- said to be Thomas Edison's first paying job!

Whether it be factories, farms, or struggling families, Deborah Hopkinson has done an exceptional job here of researching the various threads of the history of cotton in America, and of pulling them together into an engaging story that, in turn, reveals so much about the broader history of our country. What makes the story most interesting is her ability to repeatedly illustrate significant aspects by referring to the words of real characters she uncovered in her research:

"Laura Nichols from Connecticut wanted to earn her own money. She hoped to get more education, but her parents couldn't afford to help her. So Laura took a job in a mill near her home, determined not to give up her hopes for the future.

"Years later, Laura told her own children how hard she had been willing to work for her dreams. Laura believed there was 'something better within my reach and I must have it or die in the attempt. I began to realize that my future would be largely what I make of it, that my destiny was, as it were, in my own hands.'

"New England girls like Laura were part of a new chapter in American history. The early years in Lowell and other mill towns of New England marked the first time large numbers of women moved away from their families to cities to take jobs far from home."

But, as is seen repeatedly throughout the book, such manufacturing work was initially done for low wages, beginning at incredibly young ages, and was carried out at a rapid pace throughout obscenely long work days with no ventilation, and under conditions that frequently led to permanent injury. Very young people who grew old while literally spending the majority of their lives inside the walls of those mills were the victims upon whose tragic lives the modern era of child labor laws, compulsory education, safe working conditions, and minimum wages were eventually and belatedly built.

Of course, the mills were (and will be) seen by many as an improvement over the lives of sharecroppers and tenant farmers who always faced the possibility of working similarly long hours and of coming away without a cent to show for a hard year's work. For instance, Walter Strange, who began sharecropping in 1911 at the age of 12, and who was interviewed in 1938 explained that:

" 'Last year I planted seven acres in cotton and made only one bale. I used poison, too. But the boll weevil ate up the cotton in spite of it,' said Walter. 'The fertilizer cost me one hundred dollars. I sold the cotton for fifty-two dollars. The loss on the fertilizer alone was forty-eight dollars, not counting the work and the other expense. I had to sell something else to finish paying for the fertilizer.' "

Young readers will undoubtedly be intrigued by Walter's beginning as a sharecropper in his own right at such a young age. In fact, whether it be from the narratives she's uncovered, or from viewing the wealth of photographs included throughout the book, so many of the characters Hopkinson brings us face to face with are very young people.

Thus, UP BEFORE DAYBREAK is an excellent example of bringing American history to life.

But I never picked cotton like my mother did, and my sister did, and my brother did, and my daddy died young . . .
By E. R. Bird
As a children's librarian, one of my jobs is to recommend non-fiction to kids that they'll actually read. Interesting non-fiction. Now when I was a kid you couldn't have bribed me with all the peanut butter cups in the world to pick up a non-fiction book that didn't deal with animals in some fashion. So with my twelve-year-old self planted firmly in the back of my mind, I set out to discover whether or not Deborah Hopkinson's, "Up Before Daybreak: Cotton and People In America", would be something a child would find themselves voluntarily reading. Ms. Hopkinson had a very good 2006 publishing year, by the way. When she wasn't creating picture books like "Sky Boys" to celebrate the construction of the Empire State Building she was writing gripping historical fiction like "Into the Firestorm" for the young `uns. Of these three 2006 ventures, however, "Up Before Daybreak" is the trickiest. You have to talk about a staple, how it affected the economy, the toll on human lives and do all this in an engaging factual manner. Some parts of this book work better than others and some parts garner more interest as well. "Up Before Daybreak" is a worthy effort to follow cotton and how it changed America. I'm just not entirely convinced that it's the best of Ms. Hopkinson's non-fiction work.

King Cotton. It's one of those national products that made America what it is today. Tracing the beginning of cotton production from the birth of our nation onwards, the reader comes to understand how this fluffy white flower came to stand at the center of our nation's economy. We see the birth of the cotton gin and the rise of slavery in the South. We watch as the Civil War neatly dismantles the farms and sharecropping rises. At the same time, the history of the mills that spun the cotton and the birth of the American Industrial Revolution all work together to bring us a well-rounded picture of cotton in all its myriad forms and how it affected the people that came in contact with it.

The book is neatly divided into two sections. The first is all that happened with cotton before the Civil War and the second all that happened after. Not only does Ms. Hopkinson discuss at length the effects that both slavery and sharecropping had on white and black workers, but she answers some questions I myself had about the times. For example, why do we never hear about any black mill workers? Well, that may have something to do with the fact that blacks tended to be barred from mill work (always excepting housekeeping and hard labor). Though the text jumps back in forth in time depending on the subject, the reader never gets the feeling that the story is difficult to follow. And while the effect of all of this on children is certainly a large part of the book's focus, adults get just as much attention as well.

Which is maybe why I was a little baffled to find that labor unions didn't really get mentioned in the book. Unionism is reduced to a single paragraph on page 78 and a sentence on page 79, and even then it speaks of a unsuccessful attempt in September 1934. Other small mentions are made of unions, but none are more than a sentence or two here and there and a child reader could be forgiven for assuming through this book that all attempts to unionize mills were unsuccessful.

Yet the book is magnificent in its factual information. First of all, the photos in the book are top notch. Spottted regularly throughout the text they show cotton in different eras, to say nothing of different mill workers throughout the decades. I loved the Selected Bibliography which even went so far as to include "Articles, Oral Histories, Narratives, Bulletins, and Pamphlets". The Notes that go chapter by chapter are copious, and the Index easy to use. But the best part of the book, to my eyes, was the suggested "Further Reading For Young People". How many times have I gotten through a non-fiction book and found the author skimpy on helping kids find further information on a given subject? Well, Ms. Hopkinson is on the case. She even goes so far as to split this section into the books and websites on cotton in the fields vs. cotton in the mills. Manifique.

Sadly, this isn't to say that the book doesn't get a little bogged down in unnecessary facts. Take, for example, the cotton factor John Chrystie. While learning about what a "cotton factor" was is interesting, his story slows significantly when we get a physical description of the warehouse he worked and lived in. Kids reading this book may certainly be interested in the job of factors, but it seems a bit excessive to expect them to keep reading through sentences like, "In the evening we sit in our offices and play whist, or read papers when they come or write letters." I would have liked a couple diagrams to take their place. We hear that picking cotton was a nasty painful job, but we never see a diagram or picture of what a head of cotton looked like. Visualizing is all well and good but it would be nice to see a single head of cotton, if only to understand what the subject of this book even looked like. When a former picker says of cotton that, "When they open up, there's a little point on every one of those at the edge of the burs", you want to see what that means. There is one picture of cotton bolls, but they're not presented in a way that allows you to understand why picking them would be difficult. Ms. Hopkinson also assumes that we understand the history of the boll weevil, so it comes up casually in the text without any history. What is a "boll weevil"? What does it look like? Why did they suddenly appear en masse during the Great Depression? Kids like pictures and they like evil insects. To not include either in the book reduces the story's kid-friendly appeal, which is a pity considering the author's sheer wealth of information.

It would have been nice to hear what the current state of the American cotton industry was. However, it's difficult to fault how Hopkinson smartly ties in this story of slavery and human pain to the 246 MILLION children who work cotton fields all over the globe today. Kudos to Hopkinson then for the sentence in the book's final paragraph, "The next time you buy clothes made of cotton, take time to look at the label. Consider doing some research to see what working conditions are like where that cloth was made." Altogether, the book is a funny mix of good and bad. There were some elements unaddressed and excluded that could have made the title stronger as a whole, and I'm not entirely convinced that many children would read this for pleasure, but it's a fascinating topic and an interesting time in our nation's history. A good if slightly flawed book.
