Bitter, Sacrafice, Possession

This was one of my favorite's by Jude Watson so forgive me if this review is slightly biased. I truly loved this book. Instead of focusing on a mission, grand scale battles and beheadings of certain Bounty Hunters, Secrets of the Jedi emphasized the morals and sacrafices of the Jedi. We get to see the three different Jedi (Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and Anakin) deal with their love in three different ways. Qui-Gon, first of all, did not have the chance to make the tearing decision that Obi-Wan had to make in Secrets of the Jedi, thus, there was no internal conflict. I must add that I thought the conversation between him, Yoda and Obi-Wan at the end was wonderfully potrayed. I felt just as awful as Obi-Wan when he had to make his decision. Then we see Obi-Wan faced again with the choice of continuing his life as Jedi or bailing out again for something else (this 'something' to be Siri.) His love for her was geniune but yet he made the choice to let her go. And finally we see Anakin's and Padme's relationship which can only be summed into one word: Possession. I think this book was a nice fit for Episode Three, in the sense that we can see that possession between Anakin and Padme. We can see the foreshadowing and why Anakin was never truly committed to the Jedi and why it was so easy for him to turn.

I enjoyed this book and I could really sense more passion put into it than many of Watson's last few. A must read for those who aren't fond of swinging lightsabers (although there is plently in the book) and are more fond of seeing character development. Toasts to Watson for this exciting read!

Love vs. Possession

Jude Watson is an amazing writer for teens, and she really gives them something to think about in this book. No doubt about it the fact that I'm an adult, but I think everyone can read her books and enjoy them (I have the entire Jedi Apprentice series, gotta love Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon! LOL). This book focuses on the love that is forbidden in the Jedi Code, and for good reason. I was glad to see a book where Qui-Gon explained his lvoe for Tahl. Obi-Wan, understanding this, was able to finally give up and let go of what he loved the most, in contrast to Anakin, who never would. Obi-Wan, is such a true Jedi, like Qui-Gon, where he sacrifices all to make the choices he must. Anakin cannot sacrifice his love for Padme' because it consumes him; in a sense, he possesses her, and that's what this book defines for people who read it. You come to understand why Padme' and Anakin's love is different than any other Jedi's even after in the New Jedi Order--it's about possession and power. It is almost as though he has to OWN Padme' to protect her. It explains so much of the future events. This book is a great read, and is really good. I hope everyone enjoys it. It makes Obi-Wan the Jedi he is, and it shows reasons why Anakin will never be the Jedi he should be.

Love is forbbiden for a jedi

Overall I thought this was a pretty good book. I've read every Star Wars book written by Jude Watson and this was a different type then I was used to. It's all about how all of the main jedi= Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and Anakin felt love at different points in their lives. Qui-Gon and Thal, Obi-Wan and Siri, and Anakin and Padme. It points out some of the main issues about why love is forbidden for jedi, but addresses if it should be. All of this is happening while they are tracking the story of Taly Fry, a boy who is very smart but while setting up a security system over hears bounty hunters, now the bounty hunters are after him, and while Obi-Wan and Siri are watching him thier relationship becomes closer. 20 years later Obi-Wan, Anakin, Siri, and Anakins wife Padme are on a misson with the same boy - Taly Fry. Anakins and Padmes relationship will get stronger, but what about Obi-Wan and Siris. A surpising ending that is not that surprising. Read the book to find out more. If your in to normal Star Wars with fighting and missions, it's an okay book, but it is more about the the relationship growing between jedi as the clone wars go on...Overall good book... But I think that I am Jude Watsons number 1 fan, so what else should I say !

You can tell from the very first page that P. B. Kerr had great fun writing his novel, The Akhenaten Adventure. The way the author introduces his cleverly named characters, the atmospheric setting, the fun tone of his narration--all indicate that a hugely entertaining story is in store. The first installment of his Children of the Lamp sequence is set firmly in the present day, but it soon breaks away and encompasses several wonderfully colorful parts of the globe, England and Egypt included.

John and Philippa Gaunt, two twelve-year-old not-very-identical twins, live a privileged life on the Upper East of Manhattan with their wealthy parents and two curiously-mannered Rottweilers named Alan and Neil. The twins realize there's something amiss with their world when a string of strange things begin to happen after their wisdom teeth are extracted--they dream the same dreams, become stronger, their zits clear up, and wishes wished in their presence inexplicably come true. And, when their estranged Uncle Nimrod asks them to come to England for the summer during one such shared dream, the discovery of their destiny is set in motion.

John and Phillippa discover that they are descended from a long line of Djinn, have great inherent powers. They must call on these powers a lot sooner than they anticipated, though, because the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten is not as dead as history has so far declared and his legion of seventy magical djinn could tip the balance of power in the magical realm and affect the whole world order.

Grade 5-8–In this uneven fantasy, 12-year-old twins live a privileged but uneventful life in New York City until both John and Philippa need to have their wisdom teeth extracted. Afterward, the children begin to experience strange growth spurts, have cravings for smoke and heat, and gain the ability to grant wishes. After inviting them to visit him in London, their Uncle Nimrod informs them that they are descended from the Marid tribe of djinn. As he begins their training, they travel to Egypt, where they are pursued by Iblis, the leader of an enemy tribe who thinks Nimrod knows the location of the lost tomb of Akhenaten. This pharaoh bound 70 djinn to his service and whoever finds his tomb will have the ability to command them and shift the balance of power from good to evil. As they travel around the world, the siblings and their uncle have numerous adventures, culminating in an encounter with Akhenaten's ghost. The writing has a cinematic quality as Kerr provides detailed glimpses at the changing scenery; at times, there is too much description, particularly of room furnishings. In-depth characterizations are sacrificed for the often humorous, fast-moving plot. British thriller-writer Kerr puts an ingenious spin on the enchanted-lamp theme in his first novel for children, in which 12-year-old twins John and Philippa discover that they come from a preeminent family of djinn. Although their powers are not yet fully fledged (they're constantly forgetting whether spiraling into a bottle should be done clockwise or counterclockwise), the twins must help their powerful uncle Nimrod preserve the balance between opposing djinn tribes. Kerr's background as a writer for adults may explain his tendency to give grown-ups more personality than his preteen protagonists, and one sometimes winces at characterizations that seem like holdovers from the colonial era (one Egyptian servant named Karim is dubbed "Creemy" because he smiles "like a cat that's had the cream"). But it's hard not to admire the well-crafted scaffolding that supports the fantasy (for instance, all djinn suffer from claustrophobia--you'd have it too if your ancestors were always getting trapped inside stoppered vessels). Casting kids in roles of real magic and power is a time-tested premise, and this variation gains extra appeal from its sources in a refreshingly different tradition than those generally tapped by witch-and-wizardry retreads. The enticing metallic cover won't hurt, either. Expect the twins to transubstantiate in two more volumes to complete the Children of the Lamp trilogy. Great book for kids and adults

I'm listening to this book as an audio book...very good! I strongly recommend it for all ages. Great for reading to your younger friends/family or for family car trip (obviously the book on tape). The story is well thought out and well written. Strongly recommend it!

One-dimensional and plodding

I had high hopes for the book's premise --- twins who discover they're djinn (genies). And it's clear that the author spent a great deal of time working out the detail of the djinn world and the rules by which it operates. If only he'd spent a minute or two thinking about his characters and what makes them tick. The book is a plot-driven mess. Throughout the story, the young protagonists are uprooted from a mundane life in New York City, travel to distant places, face unprecedented dangers, possible eternal confinement in a bottle and witness brutality and death. But neither ever misses home, feels overwrought or ambivalent about their djinn status? Or maybe they did because actually at no point did I have a clue how either of them felt about anything. The book reads like a cartoon, with gags and one-liners, but no feeling, no heart. I didn't care a whit about any of the characters. I can't un-recommend it enough.

10-year-old son got into this after 'A Series of Unfortunate Events'

My son read through this, and also Book 3, and is now on Book e of the series. He asked me to get him the rest of the series. I was having a hard time getting him to invest in another book series after he finished A Series of Unfortunate Events. I don't think this exactly the same kind of macabre humor, but he had many false starts with other series (never past the first few pages) before he got into this one, so I am happy to feed his book addiction :-)

A big hit with pre-teens!

This was purchased as a gift for an eleven year old. She thought it was great, and displays it proudly in her room. Not bad for the money. The photos are excellent. It reminds me a bit of the old 16 Magazine feature stories on teen heart-throbs with hard-hitting interview questions about favorite colors and movies.

Really for Kids

I bought the book thinking it would have movie posters. Instead, the booklet has photos of the actors each paired with a list of their favorite things such as -- favorite color, music, authors, vacation spots etc.

It is a very nice glossy booklet suited for a very young fan.

Kept the book though -- maybe I'll come across a twelve-year-old who likes Harry Potter.

Kindergarten-Grade 3–Grahnville, U.S.A., may look like a normal small town, but nothing is as it seems. Each section opens with the titular question. The author asks if the obvious is happening inside the structure pictured on the right, in which people and animals are shown in silhouette. The next spread takes readers inside and they see what is really occurring within. For example, children who appear to be taking a test in an elementary school are actually rowing and taking swimming lessons (the drinking fountain overflowed). The last spread silhouettes a sleeping family, and, ironically, the interior house view shows the family doing just that, further emphasizing that things may never be as one comes to expect. With simple text, vibrantly colored cartoons, and a good guessing game, this book will appeal to children, who will enjoy flipping the pages back and forth, comparing what they saw initially in the silhouettes and then in the fully revealed pictures. While not as engaging as Jean Marzollo's "I Spy" series (Scholastic), the zaniness of the activities and situations will elicit smiles and chuckles.–Lynda Ritterman, Atco Elementary School, Waterford, NJ

wonderful book!

Geoff Grahn is my favorite illustrator working in the U.S. today. I was thrilled to find he finally published a picture book. The illustrations are playful and fantastic, and the concept is as quirky as you'd expect coming from such an original, idiosyncratic artist. But that's all from an adult's perspective--kids will love guessing what strange activities are taking place behind the windows of each building in Grahn's town. It's exactly the type of book that would have fueled my imagination when I was a kid, and I plan to give it as a gift this year to all the kids I know--both old and young.

Great Teacher Resource

As a fifth grade teacher I found this simulation book to be a great resource to use in the classroom. I have used the Easy Simulation books before and this one follows the exact format. My only problem with this particular edition is that the simulation scenarios seemed to be too easy for the students to succeed. Exploration was a dangerous trade and many explorers died, became sick, or were lost during their adventures. The simulation book does have situations that allow students to encounter these situations but most often they can "pass" these with relative ease. Part of the fun in these activities is that "explorers" become sick, die, or lose their ship. When this did not happen the activity lost its adventurous feel. So, I modified the situations and made them much more difficult to succeed and more likely for students to encounter difficulty. This made the activity far more exciting for students. If there are other teachers who these these resources I would love to hear what modifications you made to these activities. Overall, great resource and an excellent way to bring excitement to the classroom!

Not for me

I was hoping for something similar to American History Simulations. In that book, the scenarios are short and related to specific events in American history. This series of books does not present the simulations in that way. The simulations are part of a 5 day continuous lesson plan. The students don't do short activities. The activities are continuous and involve spinning a spinner to see what happens next to each group. It is a well planned book but the set up just didn't meet my needs.

Confusing, but excellent

This book takes much preparation and once the students get the hang of it, the value is wonderful. Following the steps is somewhat confusing. By the third day, they are more independent, but before that, much teacher assistance. The information that they get about explorer life is so good that i continure to use this year after year. Someone borrowed my last book and I had to buy a new one because I love it so much.

PreSchool-K - This bland visual rendering of one of Joel's popular ballads takes what should be a universal declaration of love between a parent and child and turns it into a narrow, limiting sentiment. The lyrics hint at an impending separation between a father and daughter, which he tries to soften with his heartfelt declaration of his unending love, comparing its limitless boundaries to a song that goes on and on. The words are beautiful and can be read aloud easily. The illustrations, however, deaden the overall impact. Depicting stiff and posed figures saying good night and then traveling on a sailboat off into the night, the pictures are nothing more than a literal interpretation of the words, not an expansion of them. Exquisite!

Billy Joel's gorgeous love song to his daughter makes an absolutely exquisite book, and the illustrations are perfect for the words. I have two little daughers who were immediately mesmerized by this book as the love of the father for his daughter radiates from every page. I have been a huge Billy Joel fan for 30 years so it was a natural addition to their book collection. Small children just feel the tremendous love contained in the words but grownups will understand their poignancy. An outstanding bedtime book!

movie poster book is quite nice. There are fifteen pages of photo's from the Prisoner of Azkaban movie, however, the posters are double sided, with different pictures on each side. If you want to take them out of the book and hang them up you would need to decide which picture you prefer, as one of them will be facing the wall. This is smaller than the poster book of the Sorcerer's Stone, however this gives you more room on your wall for more posters.

My children love this poster book. Good pictures from the movie have been chosen and there are plenty of Ron if you love him best like my daughter.
