This is a wonderful book! It provides easy lesson plans that can be implemented with any K-2 math concept. It comes with pages that can be reproduced, fun and engaging lessons that kids love, and links math to everyday life. It also provides other literature that can be used to support the concept, as a read aloud or wherever else during your day. I can't say enough about the book!

Mocked by her brothers for being smaller and weaker, Violetta grows more determined to succeed. She creeps out at night to practice her sword fighting and horseback riding. With perseverance, the "nimble and quick" Princess becomes an expert jouster. In honor of her 16th birthday, the king announces a tournament with the victory prize being her hand in marriage. Outraged and appalled, Violetta cries: "You want meto marry some dimwit in a tin suit? Just look at your own knights! They whip their horses and they can't even write their own names!" Taking matters into her own hands, she disguises herself in armor and poses as "Sir No-Name." After defeating the other contenders, she reveals her true identity and chooses her prize--independence. Meyer's ink-and-watercolor illustrations run across the pages in panels and were inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry. Children will pore over the medieval details. The author of The Thief Lord (2002) follows up her second novel, Inkheart [BKL S 1 03], with a picture book that will instantly begin appearing on "Strong Girl Protagonist" book lists. Happily, this is so well done that it's likely to win over children who normally prefer their princesses without the revisionist twist. Raised by a widowed king, Princess Violetta is put through the same paces (swordplay, riding, jousting) as her older, brawnier brothers. Her practice pays off when her father holds a tournament--with Violetta as the grand prize--and she handily scuttles his plans. Bell translates Funke's story from the German with aplomb ("You want me to marry some dimwit in a tin suit?"), and Meyer's effervescent line-and-watercolor artwork, as funny as it is lovely, stretches across each spread in horizontal strips--a droll homage to the Bayeux Tapestry. This jaunty parable offers children an endearing, indomitable character along with a lesson in girl power. For a gently feminist storytime, pair it with other tales of assertive princesses, such as that oldie but goodie, Robert Munsch's The Paper Bag Princess (1980), or Katherine Paterson's The King's Equal (1992), for somewhat older children. Funky Funke

You know, if American children's authors aren't careful, Cornelia Funke is going to become the number one most sought after children's author the minute J.K. Rowling finishes Harry Potter #7. She's already become the number one most sought after German children's author (a cupcake to anyone who can name me another who's as well-known in America) and she solidifies her standing every day with books like, "The Princess Knight". I admittedly was a little shocked by parents pooh-poohing the book because it begins with the death of the title character's mother. How on earth do these parents read books like, "Snow White" or "Cinderella" to their kids? Or do they just rely on Disney films instead? And what about such classic picture book titles as "Babar"? Does any and every book get thrown out if someone kicks the bucket? Whatever the case, this is a fine fine book that gives the world a strong-hearted heroine who knows what she wants and how to get it. Think of it as a kind of "Alanna" by Tamora Pierce, but for younger girls.

When King Wilfred the Worthy's three sons were born, he knew exactly how to raise them. They were taught fencing and fighting and horseplay and good manners. When his daughter Violetta was born, however, he hadn't a clue. His wife died in childbirth and rather than ask anyone else for help, Wilfred decided to raise his daughter like his sons. Of course, being a girl she was physically smaller than her brothers. Only through constant training was she able to carry her own and win their amazed respect. When her sixteenth birthday comes up, Wilfred informs his daughter that there will be a jousting tournament for her hand on that day. Apparently he hasn't completely forgotten that Vi's actually a girl. For her part, Violetta is more than a little miffed. Quoth she, "You want me to marry some dimwit in a tin suit? Just look at your own knights! They whip their horses and they can't even write their own names!". This speech doesn't go down well with daddy dearest, but on the day in question Violetta concocts a plan that not only gets her off the hook but allows her to do what she wants for the rest of her life.

I'm amused by the people that dislike this book because of the fact that Vi does indeed marry at the end. The direct quote from the book is, "And who did she marry? Well, if you must know, many years later, she married the rose gardener's son and lived happily ever after". She marries on her own terms when she wants to and who she wants to. So has the book sold out because it ends with the main character getting a man? Dude, the book would have sold out if the author had felt that the character might have wanted a man but shouldn't have one for the greater good. I'm all for books in which the female protagonists live their own lives without reliance on a male in some way. This, however, felt right and worked within the context of the story. Also, there's the fact that the book says, "if you must know", as if this was her own personal choice and not some gossip to be bandied about by loose tongues.

Admittedly, for all the fine writing, Funke's book wouldn't have been half so successful if the book hadn't sported illustrator Kerstin Meyer's pictures. Using the Bayeux Tapestry as her inspiration, the pictures here have a kind of spunk and verve that allow the whole enterprise to work smoothly. The picture of Violetta bawling out her father is worth the price of admission alone.

So, you've got a great story with delightful pictures and a wonderful message about women and their work. There's nothing cloying or cutesy in Funke's tale. Just honest-to-goodness well-written storytelling and a main character with enough verve and oomph to last four or five picture books more, should the author so deem it a good idea (hint hint). A wonderful addition to any and every library. Definitely consider reading it alongside "The Paperbag Princess".

Why the Wide Range of Ratings?? -- a review of "The Princess Knight"

Quite a varied selection of ratings [Ramseelbird 5 stars; mom's 2.5] and you might be wondering why and how this could be. In my opinion the answer is evident: they've got the age range wrong. This book is not suitable for four year olds, nor six year olds in my opinion (and I have one of the latter). Instead I would put the age range as 9 and up.

My first reason for suggesting this book is not for young children is that the mother dies in childbirth. As multiple mom's have suggested, little children don't understand this concept and don't want to. In fact, most 4 year olds don't even know where babies come from, so how can this make sense.

My second reason for suggesting that this book is for older children is that the arguments and theme are fairly sophisticated and not in line with little kid thinking. At five, little girls don't really understand the social complexities of gender and empowerment. Thus the struggle to compete and find one's way amongst the older males is lost on them.

Now-- for older children I think it would be a good book. The story would no doubt be fresh to them (it certainly wasn't for me) and they could relate to the princesse's accomplishments, and the unfairness of the brothers in the first part of the book, and the father at the end of the story.

So in my opinion....

Three Stars. Despite some rave reviews, I thought the plot was hackneyed. Definitely been there, done that. Okay Read-aloud. Okay art. Would be a good book for the 9 and up age group, but really not all that suitable for small fry and younger children.

Cute Girl Power Story

This is an enjoyable story, especially for little girls. It crushes gender stereotypes while making you laugh. Within a funny, endearing story is the lesson that girls aren't helpless. I still like reading the traditional fairy tales (Cinderella, et al) to my daughter, but it's nice balancing them with an empowering story like this--and especially "The Paper Bag Princess" (my daughter's favorite).

Great idea, and great for independent practice

I love these books. It's a simple but clever idea, and the sheets are great for getting kids to work in pairs. These are a great warm-up, main lesson review, or review. I keep a stack of them handy so when we have a few minutes free in class I take them out. The kids greatly enjoy working on them, and they're so engrossing that I can have a few minutes to work one-on-one with a child who needs some help.

The best thing about this book is it gets you thinking about other sheets you can make. I've made language arts sheets, science sheets, social studies, etc. Kids love them and it forces them to work on good winner / good loser skills too. Highly recommended.

She especially admires three wild horses just captured by the king's handlers: a blue roan mare, so called for the white hairs mixed through her blue-black coat, and her two foals. When the evil lord of a neighboring kingdom steals the foals, Syeira frees the mare and joins her quest to find her young. The relationship between Arwin and the girl deepens until Syeira has become like another child to the blue roan. Never anthropomorphized, the horses communicate with humans wordlessly, through a highly original language of smells and scent pictures. Lots of olfactory details enrich the well-realized, preindustrial setting. The story is overstuffed with interesting characters and situations, including an herbalist addicted to a memory-enhancing plant, hot-air balloons used as war engines, winged horses, a murderous small bird turned third-rate artist–and that's not even the half of it. Such images enhance his vision of a rustic fantasy world where horses of rare, ancient stock can communicate with certain highly sensitive humans. It is such a bond that sends Syeira, a preteen orphan girl, on a dangerous quest to reunite a mare with her colts, cruelly stolen by a warmongering ruler. Along the way, Syeira encounters a series of eccentric characters whose assistance helps her both free the colts and, inadvertently, galvanize a civil war. Although Findlay's lingering affection for dense description, symbolism, and stories within stories may put off some readers, many fantasy devotees will relish his richly embroidered imaginings. The Blue Roan Child

The Blue Roan Child (By Jamieson Findlay) is beautifully written, and a breath of fresh air for those of us who are tired of reading variations of the same idea in fantasy books. I don't know about you, but I sure seem to be reading a lot of books where the only thing going for them is a good action scene here and there.
The Blue Roan Child is marvelously imaginative, with a cast of unforgettable and pleasantly weird characters, which Findlay brings to life with a unique and beautiful style of writing.
Now, for those of you who aren't exactly enthusiastic about "horse books" Don't let that aspect of the story turn you off. While, yes, this book will definitely attract and be loved by horse fans, there is SO much more to the book than the relationship between horse and human. To name a few of these other aspects: Original fantasy, action, a little good vs. evil, and a coming-of-age story.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy and/or animals!

The Basic Plot:

Syeira is an orphaned girl of about 11 years whose only family are the horses she cares for in the King's stables in the town of Haysele. Vague memories of her mother's love are all that connects her to her mysterious past. She lives a rather uneventful life, where her only joy is in the wild scent of the untamed and equally mysterious Arva horses that nobody but Syeira can really understand or come anywhere near to. Syeira seems destined to live out a life, not quite content or miserable, forever tending to the King's horses, when the evil Lord Ran (unbeknownst to him) interferes. He has decided to come to Haysele in search for more warhorses to fight in his endless battles waged to win himself more land. However, it's not just warhorses he is after this time, but Arva horses! Thus, Syeira and the beautiful and intelligent Arva mare embark on a journey to rescue the mare's stolen foals.
Along their way, Syeira and her companion will meet others, who, be they as lost as Syeira and the mare, or quite wise, will help them in their quest to find the foals, and help Syeira find herself.

A good book but a little too long

I enjoyed this book but it was a little too 'horsie' for my liking and long. I also didn't find that the main character struggled enough. She really didn't have much personality. My favourite character was the horse. I found that they met a ton of people who didn't have a thing to do with the plot later on. By the end I had to pull myself through this book.

I recomend this book if you really like horses (unlike me, I begged my mom for horse-back riding lessons when I was eight but when she refused I didn't care for horses again) and if you don't mind dull characters and tedeous plot-lines. Oh yes, and did I mention that just at the point where you thought things were getting interesting, that Siera was really a dream, you found out that it was all a trick. This book had a lot of potential but by the end I was pretty sure that the auther blew it. I only finished it because I hate to leave a book unfinished. But I don't want to be too hard on it. If you have no patience with plotless, and at times tedious books, by all means-read away!

The book, Blue Roan Child, is very interesting and provides a wide vocabulary span. Magic is also involved and animals, too. Putting facts about animals and mixing that with fantasy and magic, Jamieson Findlay, wrote my #1 book choice.

Reiche (I, Freddy [Scholastic, 2003]) has entered new ground with this traditional ghost story. Some story elements are reminiscent of the film Pirates of the Caribbean, including the atmosphere. Vicki and Peter are fairly stereotypical characters, and several plot progressions depend on sixth-sense movements by the characters. The adults (and Peter), who know what Vicki is up to and the danger she's in, are concerned but stay out of her way. The neat conclusion ties up all the loose ends. The pompous mayor, the tenacious journalist, and other secondary characters are stock, and the translation suffers from pedestrian dialogue and lots of cliches. About the Author
Dietlof Reiche's middle-grade and young adult novels have garnered many awards in his native Germany, including the German Juvenile Literature Award and the Oldenburg's Children's Book Prize.

Born in Dresden, Germany, in 1942, Reiche spent his early childhood in the village of Nördlingen, the town where his first historical novel Der Bleisiegelfälscher (The Lead Seal Counterfeiter), is set. Before becoming a full-time writer of children's books, Reiche studied engineering. He later took an academic position at Darmstadt Technical University, followed by studies in sociology, and work as a graphic designer.

Many of Reiche's books are historical fiction, but he also enjoys mixing history with fantastic elements, and often brings his wonderful sense of humor and his concern for the environment to his books.

In Reiche's exciting new novel Ghost Ship, he blends contemporary life with history and the supernatural to create one captivating adventure. His Golden Hamster Saga series: I, Freddy; Freddy in Peril; Freddy to the Rescue; and the forthcoming, Freddy and the Ferocious Ferrets is hilariously narrated by Freddy the Golden hamster, and was inspired by memories of the numerous pet hamsters Reiche had as a child.

Not the best book i ever read. It seems kinda disconnected and drags in unnecessary ways!It builds up the suspense...then drops you! And it is vague in so many places! All in all, an ok book but not Great.

A blend of mystery, ghost story and pirate tale, Dietlof Reiche's Ghost Ship is a brilliant novel that will keep readers intrigued until the end. Set in a small New England community in present day, Reiche supplements his story with flashbacks to the 18th century that add to the ghostliness of the tale.

Vicki is a twelve year old girl who works as a waitress in her dad's restaurant, Ye Olde Seashell Room. A community that thrives with tourism, their spectacular bay is the main reason people go there to escape. Except one day, the bay disappears. Nothing is left except a muddy area where the bay used to be, until the Storm Goddess shows up. A two hundred and thirty year old sailing vessel, the Storm Goddess appears in the middle of the empty bay looking brand new. Vicki and her new friend Peter appear to be the only one troubled by the bay's disappearance and the ship's reappearance. Could this have anything to do with Vicki's ancestor's journal? He was a quartermaster on the ship and Vicki's reading of the journal coincided with the bay's disappearance. Suddenly Vicki is being haunted by ghosts and she knows the only way to return everything to normal is to get aboard the ghost ship and unlock an ancient curse. All that stands in her way is a greedy mayor, a story hungry reporter, a security detail and her curfew.

Reiche story unfolds in such a way that a reader is never bored, yet kept in suspense until the end of the tale. His characters are fun and adventurous, everyday people who find themselves thrown into a mystery. The book, though it could be classified as horror, is perfect for ages 7-12 because of its lack of gory details and Reiche's masterful story telling skills.

This is a wonderful read aloud for a class. I read it to my fifth and sixth graders, and they loved it. We found ourselves stopping and discussing what might be happening next in the story many times. We were all surprized at the story's conclusion. They all hope that Mr. Reiche writes more stories like this one!!!

Arthur Penhaligon's first day at a new school is marked by a nearly fatal asthma attack. In fact, the attack should have been fatal, but a key shaped like the minute hand of a clock that somehow helps him to breathe saves Arthur. Shortly after, strange-looking people pursue Arthur as a mysterious plague breaks out. As Arthur enters a huge house that only he can see, searching for a cure for this plague and for the mysterious Mister Monday, the adventure is launched. Nix's creativity spills over in the fast-paced engrossing plot. The House is a massive universe populated by Ink Fillers, giants, eerie and evil mechanical creatures, the robot-like Commissionaires, and Mister Monday's attendants, Dawn, Noon, and Dusk. The characters are interesting and complicated, particularly those in the House; Arthur is never sure whom he can trust, and the various quirks will keep readers guessing. A Thinking Kids Fantasy

Though not a fan of fantasy, I do read it occasionally to keep up on what my students are reading. The richly imagined descriptions in this series made it one that I enjoyed reading. An asthmatic seventh grade boy, Arthur Penhaligan, is the hero for this seven book fantasy. Handicapped and with the odds always against him, he does not give up trying to do what's right. A rich stew of surreal Alice in Wonderland-type imagery and characters, elements reminiscent of myths, an alternate universe, endless hair's breadth escapes, grisly horror, and mystery, Keys to the Kingdom never lags. However, this series is not just a vividly imagined movie in print for a happy reader to follow. Keys to the Kingdom is a thinking kid's fantasy. If one pays close enough attention, answers to the great questions of the origins of our world and our human natures might come close to being answered.

Well-liked by both boys and girls in my middle school classes, this series is favored by boys; and though written at a seventh grade reading level, is also well-liked by high school boys into about tenth grade. The interest level is rated at grade five through eight. Both the complexity of the plot and the at times nightmare-like imagery may keep this from being a book for fifth grade and under, unless a child in these years is looking to be challenged and a little frightened.

The series starts with Mister Monday and moves through each day of the week: Grim Tuesday, Drowned Wednesday, Sir Thursday, Lady Friday, Superior Saturday, and the eagerly awaited and yet un-named Sunday episode.

Not great , but not bad

There's certainly one thing to be said about everything Nix writes, and that is that it's rife with original creativity and completely new fantasy stories. However, sometimes the books themselves, although phenomenally imaginative, are hit or miss depending on how much Nix is able to flesh out the story. The Seventh Tower series, for instance, is deftly imagined, a two worlds drawn together through light and shadow, and the ability to use colored gemstones to create light beams that can do all sorts of interesting things. Unfortunately for whatever reason, Nix doesn't explore the world and the story enough. It's much more like eating watery soup than it is like consuming a good meal.

The Abhorsen Trilogy, on the other hand, is a great work, and although it's not a classic literature sort of story, the world itself is fleshed out well, so that the reader can really imagine the world and lose themselves in it. I feel like the Keys to the Kingdom series is a mixture of both, and I'd love to see the world more fully explored. The first book, especially, seems to move toward that path, but as the books progress, they seem to become more and more formulaic and lacking in substance. Ultimately, Nix's imagination seems to know no bounds, but if he would slow down and put more life into these books, I think they would be much better. Not to say that the books aren't fun to read, but I believe they could be fun to read and rich. Hopefully his next fantasy series will be more like The Abhorsen Trilogy.

High Interest Series Beginning

Mister Monday is an interesting Fantasy novel that draws readers in from the very beginning. The main character, Arthur is flawed and that is what makes him the "chosen" one for the Keys to the Kingdom. In this series starter, Arthur learns what power he has as he tries to determine how to live his life with this key that he has obtained and this house and little, scary fantasy creatures that no one else can see but him.

Arthur starts to think he is losing it, but a few friends from his P.E. class see the creatures too, so Arthur apprehensively goes on his journey as the reluctant hero who is bound to find a way to save his community and family.

This book along with Grim Tuesday will hook readers on this series. I can't wait for the rest of the books in this series.

Harry Potter lovers can definitely find a new love in this series.
