My daughter reads me a chapter from one of these books each night before bed. The books are interesting and provide excellent information in an entertaining way. I think they are great for readers at the 2nd and 3rd grade levels.

Fun books, great condition

Am pleased to have found a boxed set of Magic School Bus books! DVD's are everywhere, but the chapter books can be tricky to find. This seller offered a "used" set and it arrived in great shape! We're excited to add these to our home library. Am off to search for the next in lineup, as our kids devour these entertaining and informative (and far less annoying for grownups to read than the Ol' Magic Treehouse series). Thanks!

My daughter is in 2nd grade and she loves these books. I'm glad they made chapter books because the other ones are too easy for her. At least with these, it takes her a little bit.

I Will Never Look at Plants the Same Way Again!

Although not as sharp as his first outing in the immensely popular "Goosebumps" series, "Stay Out of the Basement" is still quite the page-turner. R.L. Stine has the ability to grab his readers' attentions almost immediately, and that is one reason why his books are so adored by millions of kids everywhere.
This was one of the many "Goosebumps" books I got for Christmas in sixth or seventh grade. I had changed from "I'll never read those stupid books" to "I want them all!" I hadn't had most books for more than a couple of hours before they were already read. That's how hooked I was.
"Stay Out of the Basement" starts off with Margaret and Casey playing Frisbee. Their father, Dr. Brewer, is a scientist who always has to wear a baseball cap on his head; he does this because, as we later find out, one of his experiments go awry and the side-effects include having leaves growing out of his head instead of hair.
Things are going fine for Margaret and Casey until they start noticing things. Things like their father's insistent warnings to never go down into the basement; things like millions of bugs squirming around in his bed; things like their father scarfing down plant food and trying to make them eat it, too! As if having leaves sprouting up from under his cap wasn't weird enough!!
The climax works well in this book. It all comes down to the classic "Who do you trust?" saga. Towards the end, we discover that there are two Dr. Brewers; one is a real person, and one is a human-sized plant-like clone. Margaret has to decide who is lying and who is telling the truth when each Dr. Brewer claims to be her and Casey's father. I remember back when I first read it and not knowing who it was going to be. R.L. Stine had done such a wonderful job in writing the book that I didn't know who to trust, either.
In case you're a viewer who's never read the book, I won't spoil the ending for you. It's classic R.L. Stine, as everyone who has read his series will identify with. This is one "Goosebumps" book that will give you what it says.

Top-Notch, Well-Crafted, "Goosebumps" Horror.

"Stay out of the Basement" is easily one of the five best installments in the original "Goosebumps" series, a true classic. This is an entry that is loaded with fear, suspense, twisted discoveries, and clever, surprising plot turns...back when R.L. Stine used a genuinely dark, uneasy feel instead of false alarms and explanation points. He doesn't restrain the dread and tension; they dominate the story. And Stine proves that he can make even plants scary.

In this paragraph, I'll just give a brief description. Margaret and Casey are siblings who witness an alarming change of behavior in their father, a scientist who's spending most of his time in the basement conducting weird experiments on plants. When the kids go to investigate, the plants move and breathe. And their father is getting stranger and stranger...

What's so great about this story? This isn't a "parents-don't-believe-us" entry because the father IS the one at the center of the horror. It's truly frightening because these two kids suddenly can't trust/believe a parent who's plunged into madness. In fact, one of the greatest aspects of the book is the kids' reactions and worries. There's one shocking discovery after another, like the disturbing scene when the father's baseball cap gets knocked off and his hair has been replaced with leaves. It sounds silly, but when you read it, you can't deny that the scene is creepy...and uncomfortable. And that's just the beginning of several eye-openers. There's the scene when he's forcing them to eat plant food, for instance, that is just plain freaky.

All of this crescendo into a heart-pounding climax with an incredibly sinister twist that sweeps you off your feet. What's not only scary are the life-threatening danger and the graphic descriptions, but the realization that the kids don't know what to believe anymore. And if that isn't enough, the book closes on a freakishly twisted ending that'll leave you wowed. The final twenty pages are among the very best in all of "Goosebumps".

There are other, smaller things that make this a scary, creepy book. The moving plants in the dark basement. The moaning faces that are half-plant. Here, Stine knows how to use quality descriptions to help propel the horror. He's even skilled in building the tension at a preferable pace where there are many increments of frightening revelations.

I love a "Goosebumps" book that constantly surprises as a sharp page-turner. Like I said, it's a series classic, back from when Stine was at the top of his creativity.

I love this one!!!!

This is another one of r.l. stines best goosebumps books. This book is about a brother and a sister (I can't remember their names) Who live in a house with their mom and dad. In the book the kids mother goes away and now there with their father. While the kids mother is gone they notice that there father isn't acting like he normally does. When the kids go into the basement to see whats going on they see a big surprise. To see what else happens you have to read this awesome book. This book also has a twisted ending to it. This book didn't really make me feel scared as I was reading it, but for the kids in the book it would be scary for them. Read this book, it is great!!!!

Great book

This is a fun book! I use it in my Kindergarten classroom during winter. My students absolutely love it. They love to read it over and over. Plus it is an excellent book to have in your listening center or to do writing activities with. Since my Kindergartners loved this book so much I bought a copy for my nieces at Christmas and their mother said she had to read it over and over after they opened it.

Great Writing Prompt!!

This was an awesome story to engage my first graders in a writing project. We read this adorable book, then compared it to a giant snowman that was built in Maine (google "Olympia Snow Woman"). We talked about fact and fiction, compared the two snowmen, and did a great writing project on how to build a snowman. This book is adorable. The children loved it!

One of my daughter's favorite books, Barbie: Princess and the Pauper continues to delight over the years. With a good moral message and humor, mixed with a Barbie Princess theme, this book nearly single-handedly propelled my daughter into a love of reading. I read this to her at bedtime and she still picks it up from time to time to be transported to this magical kingdom where good prevails and evil is vanquished.

I felt that the last book, The Castle of Mirrors, was missing some of Ms. Nimmo's usual "zip". It felt like there was a bit of hesitancy in her writing. Of all the books, I enjoyed that the least. However, in The Hidden King, Ms. Nimmo is back to her wonderful, enjoyable form that has made this series so pleasant and charming.

New characters continue to appear, old ones remain and rivalries still exist. A tremendous secret is uncovered - well, several, to be honest. Quite a bit is at stake here, and there are several threads that need to be managed and I found her management to be deftly done.

In earlier reviews I had voiced a concern that the books always revolved around children that the Bloors/Yewbeams didn't want to be found. That stopped in the last book, and continued here. There are no lost children...but someone else is lost, and we know why. In this instance, it makes sense - and that's so important in art. Things need to make sense, because if they don't, not many people will buy the book.

The momentum has returned...and while I said my mouth was dry after finishing the last book, it is nearly drooling in anticipation for the next book. What a magnificent ending! This is an excellent series for its intended audience, blending in the right amount of mystery, intrigue, with a firm understanding of what is right and what is wrong.

Simple But Satisfying

Charlie Bone and the Hidden King is another in a series of fun books to read. Jenny Nimmo is skilled in her storytelling.

The plot is simple, straightforward, and compelling enough to get the reader to the end of the book with ample satisfaction. The Hidden King adds extra elements about those who are endowed with the introduction of the existence of other academies for descendants of the Red King throughout the world.

The battle with the shadow, the continuation of the search for Charlie's brain wiped father, and the introduction of just enough new characters who are good and evil make this book another in the series that leaves the reader begging for the next book to be done sooner.

It is easy to see that Jenny Nimmo is skilled because when her Charlie Bone books come out I put them off as long as I can because I know that once I start reading, I will read the book straight through and then I will have to wait FOREVER, or it seems like forever for the next installment. The fact that I approach these books knowing I will love them and then finish wanting more proves that Nimmo has a gift.

I hope Charlie Bone goes on forever and that Jenny Nimmo gets a movie contract for screenplay adaptations of the series that rivals JK Rowling's deal.

Great Installment to the Series

Took me longer to get around to reading this than I would have liked. However, as always Nimmo's writing is very easy to read, so I zipped through the book. Charlie and his friends (allies) have more of the Red King mystery to unravel this time around. Finally things are happening that I had been anticipating since the first book. (I won't spoil the book for anyone, but I was really happy with the results).

Some great new characters are introduced, who will really add some layers of complexity to other dynamics down the road. The villian of this book--doesn't seem to do as much as he threatens to--Charlie is very effective at stopping him, it seems. Shades of gray are really seen in this book too--which goes really well with the title, characters act in ways you might not have expected them to in the past.

I really love this books, they aren't hard to read and are a much lighter story than alot of their contemporaries (Harry Potter etc). I'd say great for anyone above 3rd grade or there abouts. A very fun series, and clearly Nimmo has more to tell,so I will be eagerly awaiting the next book.

Slave Labor And Organ Harvesting In The Apocalyptic Future

Some kind of an apocalyptic event has devastated the world. In North American, it resulted in rearranged national borders and created an opium producing nation located between Mexico and the USA southern border. In this ‘anything goes’ nation, powerful drug families control the worldwide narcotics trade. Any ‘illegals’ who are captured by the drug thugs as they try to reach the US (across their territory) have their brains genetically modified and are put to work as a slave force in the vast opium fields. The drug lords also experiment in human cloning to create sub humans to be used as organ donors to prolong the lives of those in the ruling class.

This book is about the trials and tribulations of one of the clones who defies all odds and somehow reaches young adulthood unscathed and now threatens to destroy the status quo of the drug state. The story seemed to get little hard to follow at times, but I still found it very engaging and it kept my interest right to the very end.

"I can't get the name Matteo Alacran out of my head"

This book is Fantastic! I first read it while in middle school and I was immediately captivated by it. I'm now a college student and I've noticed over the years that I can't get the name Matteo Alacran out of my head. At least once a month it pops into my head and I have an urge to read this book again. In high school I would call my first love "mi vida" because I felt like he was my life. (Now that I'm older I've realized that only I can be my own life and no one else.) I love how much love and devotion is portrayed in this book, while still not being happy-go-lucky.
Over the years I've looked for this book in second hand stores and used bookstores but have never been able to find it, I'm so happy to now be able to add it to my collection. It is a great read for anyone aged middle school and up!

Intriguing Novel

I know this book has been around for a while, so I'm late to the game, but I loved it! I read it as a teacher looking for books to add to my 8th grade classroom library, and I will definitely add and highly recommend this one. There are three awards emblazoned on the cover for good reason. This book is a YA read because of the age of the protagonist, but I never got bored at all. The information about the dystopian society they live in is fascinating, and so is the boy's perspective of the world. There are moral, social, and economic issues involved in this coming-of-age novel, and if I had time to teach it, I would order it for all of my classes. The Hunger Games might be better for high school, but this one is better for middle school. I would say that age-wise, it fits between The Giver and The Hunger Games.
