About the Author
The uncommonly unique imagination of David Kirk has an equally uncommon source. "I found a small copy of The Gnomes' Almanac by a little-known Viennese author Ida Bohtta Morpugo. It was a cutout book simply subtitled: A Book for Children. In it, the pictures and verse about bugs, butterflies, and mice really came to life." That got him drawing and writing. Before that he made children's toys by hand. "I love making stories. The bookmaking process is a liberation for me from the years I toiled to produce handmade items. These are great books. I've bought them as gifts for several friends' kids. The pictures are colorful and beautifully drawn, the language is clever, and I keep noticing new little details every time I read them to my daughter.

Great deal on great books!

I was originally given Miss Spider's ABCs as a gift when my daughter was born. I LOVE it. Even when she was an infant she seemed to be captivated by the brightly colored illustrations. Now at 6 months she reaches for the pictures and always gives a big smile at the ending "suprise!" I then bought Miss Spider's Tea Party (board book edition), and she really seems to love the rhymes. I am now here buying Miss Spider's New Car and wishing I had just bought the set (for only like $2 more!) to begin with. These books are great for even babies, but I know she will enjoy them as she grows older and can understand them better as well.

The wondeful Miss Spider

I just can't say enough good things about this book, and all the other David Kirk books. Everything a child would want is here to behold; incredible, colorful art-work, cute, easy to read, poetic little stories, that are totally unique. Everyone I have ever given these books to, has said pretty much the same thing: "where on earth did you find this book? My kid just loves it!!"
If a childrens book can become a collectors item, this book (and all his other books) are certainly in the running.
Be prepared for your children to bestow upon you a great big bunch of "thank you" kisses!!

Patterned as a parody of the celebrated Clement Moore poem, this story of eight baby turkeys unfolds with joyous abandon and crackling vitality, as eight children embark on a Thanksgiving field trip that will change their lives forever. They are breathless as they catch sight of Farmer Mack Nuggett for the first time: "He was dressed all in denim, / From his head to his toe, / With a pinch of polyester / And a dash of Velcro." The exuberant turkeys--Ollie, Stanley, Larry, Moe, Wally, Beaver and Groucho--catch the children up in raucous barnyard antics until the merriment is quelled by the sight of the ax. Deeply touched by the turkeys' plight, the children--who have grown mysteriously fatter and have feathers sticking out from under their clothes--board the bus to go back to the city. The next night, family silhouettes can be seen--each with a grateful turkey guest--as "They feasted on veggies / With jelly and toast." This humorous, lighthearted story is adorned with bold, bright illustrations that convey a sense of wacky high-spiritedness sometimes lacking in traditional holiday fare. Ages 4-7.

Pilkey has adapted Clement Moore's classic poem for another holiday. The day before Thanksgiving finds eight boys and girls of various races taking a field trip to a turkey farm. Although Farmer Mack Nuggett seems kind at first, the children eventually discover his horrible plan to kill the turkeys for Thanksgiving dinners. Smuggling the turkeys home with them, the children save the birds, who join eight families for vegetarian dinners. The weakest part of this slapstick offering is the verse, in part because the story isn't at all parallel to Moore's and in part because of the stretches in rhyme to accommodate a pre-existing pattern. Some of the word play will escape children. Similarly, visual humor such as the placement of Farmer Nuggett and the teacher in an "American Gothic" pose will remain unappreciated by those too young for Grant Wood. The cartoon illustrations reinforce the story's general silliness but are unremarkable in themselves. Those seeking Thanksgiving humor will better served by Marc Brown's Arthur's Thanksgiving (Little, 1983), while those looking for a human-turkey relationship should dust off Lorna Balian's Sometimes It's Turkey, Sometimes It's Feathers (Abingdon, 1986). --Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, MN

Great for kids of all ages.

Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving follows the rhythm of Twas the Night Before Christmas, and this is definitely a book that should be read out loud. I'm sending this with my son to school so his teacher can read it to the class. I've told her about it, and she and the class are waiting for it! One of my favorite illustrations is where the children are hugging the happy little turkeys. (No, NOT a reality, but this is a CHILDREN'S book. We save a little reality for them later in Catcher In The Rye.) Also, I love the illustration of the children, suddenly turned all chubby, with turkey feathers sticking out from under their coats. Hmmm...

Maybe some of the naysayers of this book should stop and consider some old favorites. Snow White committed breaking and entering. Do they warn their children that they should not break into people's house and randomly clean, like Snow White? My goodness! We might have a nation of pint-sized bandits, compulsively cleaning stranger's houses...

And my eight year old son STILL does not like turkey at Thanksgiving, without reading Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving. He likes the mashed potatoes and stuffing, no matter how much I try to hide the turkey with the mashed potatoes...

Dav Pilkey is such a wonderful writer/illustrator of children's books. You should definitely check out his website, [...] Mr. Pilkey, by the way, was not vegetarian when he wrote this or trying to send any "hippie, liberal" message. He's just an adult-sized kid who writes an entertaining book.

Read it over and over!

I am not a vegatarian, yet I love this book. It by no means ruins the Thanksgiving tradition, it only gives a comical view as to how a turkey might feel about Thanksgiving. I teach kindergarten and my class wants me to read this story over and over!

This is one of my favorite of all children's books. It's silly and touching, a difficult combination to achieve. The words and the pictures are perfect together. It gets people in touch with that childlike side that remembers what it's like when we first make that connection between food and a living creature.

Pokemon Challenge

A great puzzle book that varies from easy trivia to brain scrambling puzzles. Anyone who loves puzzles and wants to test their Pokemon knowledge should get this book. The only reason I only gave it four stars was the fact that not all puzzles are true Pokemon trivia puzzles; some are just word puzzles that use the names of Pokemon species. But overall, a great book. I recommend that if you get this, you also get the games Pokemon Puzzle League (for Nintendo 64) and Pokemon Puzzle Challenge (for Game Boy Color).

We Love Seymour

My 3-year old daughter was first introduced to the I SPY series through her older brother's computer software. She loves the large picture puzzle books and some of the I SPY JR books did not hold her interest. She needed something in between and Seymour is the answer. We have read this book almost every night since her brother picked it up for her at a school book fair. She loves finding Seymour on every page. She can find all of the pictures fairly quickly but Seymour definitely won her over while building his juice box boat!

Seymour is a little wooden doll who makes him self a boat from a juice box and sails away in the sea. Follow him on his adventure and see if you and your child can find all the items he is looking for.

The photos are very clear and in full color. The book includes a guide in back for more learning fun to talk about with your child.

I would recommend this book to kids ages 2-4. They will enjoy looking for all the items Seymor needs to build his boat!

I absolutely love using these resource books for teaching history (I homeschool my three boys). Each book contains numerous primary source documents and other items with teaching ideas for each one. You will not be disappointed with these.

Great Tool for the Classroom

World War II is an important time period in history but a diffcult one to teach middle school students about. There is so much to cover and much of the material is to difficult for middle school students to understand. This book solved those problems by giving Social Studies teachers a variety of wonderful primary sources to use. Each source covers one aspect of the the war. Including the war effort at home, songs from the 1930's and Hitler Youth. Great book. Great help in the classroom. The book keeps the history simple without dumbing it down or making the time seem to cheery or to depressing.

About the Author
MICHAEL W. SMITH, professor in the College of Education at Temple University and former high school teacher for 11 years, has written eight books, including Authorizing Readers: Resistance and Respect in the Teaching of Literature (with Peter Rabinowitz) and Understanding Unreliable Narrators. His previous collaborations with Jeff Wilhelm include Reading Don't Fix No Chevys: Literacy in the Lives of Young Men and Going with the Flow: How to Engage Boys (and Girls) in Their Literacy Learning. JEFFREY D. WILHELM is the author or coauthor of 15 books for teachers, including Reading Don't Fix No Chevys (winner of the David H. Russell Award for Distinguished Research) and Improving Comprehension With Think Aloud Strategies. He was a middle and high school teacher for 13 years, and currently serves as professor of English Education at Boise State University and Founding Director of the Boise State Writing Project. He also teaches each year in middle school as part of a professional development school.

Grammar? All Errors Are Not Created Equal

Each year teachers are amazed at how little their students know about grammar, usage, and correctness. "Why don't you know this?" they ask their students. "Didn't your teacher TEACH you this last year?" Blank expressions on their faces, the kids shake their heads "no," but a visit to last year's teacher brings indignation. "I certainly DID teach them (fill in the blank with your favorite grammar term)!" she says testily -- or quizzically, depending on her mood.

Sound familiar? It does to me, which is why I bought GETTING IT RIGHT. After years of frustration with "Teflon Grammatical Memory Syndrome" and with correcting a gazillion errors on a gajillion student papers, I looked to two familiar names -- Michael Smith and Jeffrey Wilhelm -- for answers. I wasn't disappointed.

Smith and Wilhelm start with conclusive research that the teaching of grammar in isolation does not work. Then they roll up their sleeves to show us what DOES work. Essentially they argue that it is a depth vs. breadth issue when it comes to grammar. Rather than trying to teach everything, teachers should focus on what's important and most likely to benefit the students in the long run. Their two justifications for teaching a term? "1. The term is so commonly used that teachers, texts, and tests presume that students know it. 2. The term is essential to being able to explain an important issue of style or correctness."

Boiling the vast world of grammar minutiae down to 16 basic terms/concepts, Smith and Wilhelm demonstrate creative ways to teach them based on their own experiences as well as those of student teachers who have worked under their tutelage. The practical ideas will be invaluable to teachers looking for new methods of reaching their kids in this most challenging of tasks. Prompts and handout examples are provided, along with samples of typical student errors and ways to help students learn from them.

Teachers will especially appreciate the section called "A Model Sequence: Learning to Proofread." Here the authors have mercy by telling teachers to free themselves of their shackles. Circling every error on every paper is NOT productive (unless improving your own editing skills while your kids learn nothing counts as "productive"). Instead, teachers should model proofreading and provide practice on carefully selected concepts, then serve as mentors by teaching specific skills and having students serve as their own editors by focusing on errors related to those skills only. Also, peer proofreading ideas that work are spelled out -- one in particular that involves creative use of the TV series CSI. Here it means "Correct Sentence Investigators" -- and yes, the proofreaders are "agents" and the errors are the "crime" (meaning you're about to witness the unlikely marriage of "fun" and "editing").

Buy it. Read it. Use it. Most importantly, it will help your students become better writers and self-editors; less importantly (but still worthy of your consideration!) YOU will feel a little more sane and a lot more effective when you send your kids off to the next grade where they might just surprise their new teacher by saying, "Participles? Yeah, we actually DID learn how to use THEM last year!"

These guys are amazing. When I first reviewed this book, I found myself taking notes in the margins, underlining a ton, and then thinking about how I could use all that they suggest. This is the one "How to teach grammar" guide I have actually kept on my desk year-long. They narrow the 200+ "rules" down to the essentials and then show models of how best to teach grammar in the context of student writing. You will find yourself dog-earring and then dog-earring the dog-ears.

This is, without question, the best resource I've ever found for teaching grammar. After years of trying to find the right way to help my students "get it," I have finally found my answer. They take every idea I have ever had about teaching grammar and effectively created PRACTICAL and backed-by-research strategies for the English classroom. They also question what constitutes proper English -- and who says so. I read it all the way through, then started over with my highlighter!

Kindergarten-Grade 4-After a mother tells her daughter that she's remembering everything she has to be thankful for, the child pulls out Mama's scrapbook and asks, "-what are you the very most thankful for?" The ensuing story follows the two as they page through the woman's memories. The girl expects each entry to be Mama's most thankful thing-a camp experience, winning a soccer trophy, her first job, getting married-and Mama's refrained response is that it wasn't her most thankful thing. Ultimately, Mama describes holding her child for the first time, saying, "-forevermore you would be my most thankful thing." The comical captions on the cartoon-style "photographs" appear in handwritten lettering to fit the scrapbook layout. The warm words and pastel illustrations are playful representations of a child, teen, and young woman's memories. This is a wonderful, reassuring read-aloud for storytime and for individual sharing.

PreS-Gr. 1. The girl who narrates this breezy picture book tries to guess what her mother is most thankful for in her "whole long, long, long life." Leafing through a big scrapbook, she stops to consider the possibilities as Mama reminisces about the high points in her past. The pictures show her at summer camp, on a soccer team, on stage, at her prom, in a college musical, at her first job, and in her wedding. The child is heartened to discover her mother's "most thankful thing." What might have been a sticky-sweet ending is kept palatable and reassuring in a child-centered way thanks to the light touch used by McCourt and Moore, who previously collaborated on I Love You, Stinky Face (1997) and several other books. The use of a black background on the scrapbook pages is an effective device, setting the photos apart from the other scenes, nicely reinforcing the notion that mothers have lives before parenthood, sure to be a new idea for some children. Touching!

I fell in love with this book immediately. It is touching on a couple of levels: First, through her scrapbook, Mom shows the daughter how wonderful an "ordinary" life can be. Second, we see the permanent effect of motherhood on Mom: Forevermore, her child will be her "Most Thankful Thing." Get it for your daughter, but hang on to it for when she becomes a mom!

My new favorite book

My daughter checked this book out from her school library and I started reading it to her without knowing I had something so special in my hands! By the last page I was in tears and so choked up it took me about half of a minute to regain my composure to finish the story. This is a heartwarming book that I am here on Amazon tonight to buy to keep for me and my daughter for now and for when she is all grown up, do not pass up this book, an instant classic! This is probably my new favorite children's book.

A great book to give your daughter!

My kids and I fell in love with I LOVE YOU, STINKY FACE years ago, and we are thrilled that Lisa McCourt and Cyd Moore have a new book. THE MOST THANKFUL THING is a charming book to share with your daughter. You can guess what mom's most thankful thing will be, but each turn of the page leads the little girl on a journey through her mom's past...days of summer camp, and high school, and dating, and James Taylor concerts! An adorable book, illustrated as mom's scrapbook, with a very sweet message. So fun!
