A good book in the series.

Twelve-year-old Ben, his family, and thousand of others are sent to internment camps during Word War II because they are Japanese Americans. Ben's family is sent to the Mirror Lake Internment Camp, a desolate, barren place. There, Ben records his thoughts in a journal. This was an interesting book in the My Name is America series

Informs us about Japanese Peoples' suffering during WWII

I really enjoyed this book. We all know about Hitler and what he did to Jewish people, but nobody really knows about how much the Japanese people suffered too during WWII. Although we call them "Internment Camps" they were actually no better than concentration camps so whats the use pretending. I am glad this author wrote a book about Japanese people, some american citizens, during WW II. This book is worth the money.

Research-based ideas that just make sense

There are a lot of resources out there on reading and writing informational texts, but this is by far the best. The authors combine research, theory, and really practical strategies that can be used in the classroom tomorrow. It's all here. I got my copy in January and it's already dog-earred! If you buy one resource this year, make it this one.

Great for Pre-Readers - My Son Loves this Book!

Unlike most of the "I Spy" books, this one has little pictures of each of the items you are supposed to be finding, instead of just a printed word telling you what to look for. My son just turned three and being able to SEE what he's supposed to be looking for is just great! He adores this book and will look at it carefully, finding every item on every page. It's also a great book for bringing along in the car. Highly recommend this for younger kids!

Love I-Spy and so does my son!

I am a mother to a three year old boy and I remember loving I-Spy books as a child. Instead of having the normal bed-time story, I decided to order this book for him for a book that keeps you active and on your toes. He absolutely loves this book! It's very simple, even if your child cannot read. It shows the picture on the side of what you are trying to find. Even though my son has found all of the items on each page, it's a book that doesn't really get old. I plan on purchasing more for my imaginative child!

Toddler favorite!

I discovered this book when my son kept saying, "No, David" whenever we would drive home from daycare. I know there are no kids named David in his class, so I kept wondering, who is this David, and what is he doing to my kid?! Finally got to the bottom of it!

My 2-year-old LOVES this book. I don't see the appeal, as it contains about 20 words total that are some variant of "No, David!" but my son loves it so much that it deserves 5 stars. The other day, I caught him "reading" the entire book to himself, and at the end, when he read, "Yes, David. I love you," he blew himself two kisses. So adorable. Pictures are very rich and well done.

Spare text overflows with humor

All of our young children have days like David's. Some of our children have lives like David's. David does a series of typical toddler no-nos like writing on walls and trying to steal cookies. The text consists almost entirely of "No, David!" but the illustrations speak volumes. They appear crude, but for all of that they are strangely realistic. And they convey very well the awkwardness of toddlerhood.

There was definitely something in it that spoke to my youngest child. When my youngest was two and a half, he would sit in my lap to allow me to read No, David! to him -- would go find the book and give it to me to read to him --and pointed out all the details in the pictures with me. He still finds this book hilarious, and he's five years old. If you want quiet time with your rambunctious child, offer him this book. Allow your child the opportunity to read about a little boy who also has trouble behaving like Mommy wants him to.

But does this book encourage misbehavior in toddlers? Does it Give Them Ideas? Does this subversive book give toddlers ideas about new ways to rebel against parents? Is this book visual proof of bad parenting? Such concerns presuppose that toddlers misbehave on purpose. In fact, the world is a frustrating place for toddlers, who crave and fear independence from mommy, and have the same wants we do without a lot of the physical competence we have, and who are only just learning impulse control. This book empathizes with these impulses, but does not encourage them.

The illustrations portray the consequences of childish misbehavior in a way that toddlers can hear it, and the humor in the book is exactly the ultraviolet brand that parents of toddlers -- and their toddlers -- need. This book strengthened my relationship with my challenging child, and I can frequently invoke portions of the book when my child misbehaves and the resulting hilarity defuses a situation and redirects the behavior.

It is an enjoyable, hilarious book by a delightful author.

For your "dreamer" child

Kudos to David Shannon for writing and illustrating a book that dreamer children and their parents can relate to. The words are few --- which make them easily repeatable by my 3 year old. And most children --- especially dreamer kids --- will have heard these lines before: "No, David!" as he stands on a chair, reaching for the cookie jar on the top shelf of the cabinet; "That's enough!" as water pours from the side of the bathtub; and "Settle Down" as David jumps on the bed, presumably at nap time.

Because the text is short but the illustrations clear and child-like, it is a picture-book that facilitates discussion. I picked this book up from the library when my daughter was 2, and at that age, she was unable to understand the humor and to verbalize what David was doing. Now, a year later, she loves to tell me what David is doing in each picture and why his Mommy is telling him to stop.

As a parent, I love the irony: my child, who struggles with the same curiousities and temptations as David, explaining to David in her 3 year old voice, "No! We don't throw balls in the house!"

Grade 7 Up–Hughes, the founder of Comfort Zone Camp for grieving kids, believes that sharing experiences about losing a parent begins the healing process. Her purpose in writing the book is to let teens know that they don't have to feel isolated–there is help available for them. The book opens with the author's story of losing both of her parents by the age of 12 and living with an unloving stepmother. Fourteen chapters lead readers through the process of grieving and dealing with life without a parent. One teen states: People get that losing a parent is hard, but I don't think they fully understand everything we lose with them. Necessary for kids (and their parents) after a loss

I was 20 when I lost my mom to cancer and even now, over 13 years later, I still identified so vividly with the thoughts and feelings expressed by teens in this book. I wish You Are Not Alone had been around at that time. There was so much I didn't know and could have learned from reading it. As a parent now I also feel the book offers insights for us to understand better what our children might be experiencing during the loss of a loved one. There is no other book written that deals so accurately and compassionately with this devestating experience.

IF THEY CAN OVERCOME IT CAN YOU?

This story takes place at the Comfort Zone Camp. Teens talk about how they miss each of their parents and how losing a parent can affect your whole life. They help each of the teens with their struggles. They all share each of them stories that remind them of their parents.

This is a heartwarming story! They explain how always remembering you parent help. I know how it feels because losing my dad was I very hard thing for me and this book help me through hard times because knowing that there are other kids and teens that they are going through the same thing I'm going through. And somehow that helps me!

I think anyone who had lost a parent should read this book because they will know that a lot of teens have feelings after a loss of their parents. And that every person should be heard.

I bought this book for my daughter after the death of her dad in 2009. I read it before she did so that i would know what it was about. I am very glad that i bought this for her. I gave her this and a highlighter so she could relate to some of the stories in the book. It helped me to know some of her feelings afterwards so that we could focus on things that were top priority in her mind. this is a book of other children telling their feelings and stories of loosing a parent. I knew somethings to expect, but other i had no clue. I would never have know why she would do the things she did without preparing myself and seeing what most children do with this kind of loss. she was popular in the sixth grade and after her dads death, she quit being friends with most of the girls in her group, expecially those that had close relationships with their fathers like she did. She is coping very well 2 years later and i am so glad i found this book.

Sparks boys' imagination

Normally I would shy away from buying books with a product link, but I have found both the Bionicle toys and the books to stimulate my son's creativity. Building Bionicles helps builds mechanical intuition as children experience the working of gears and joints. And the books give their readers a sense of legend, heroism, and mystery, which they can then apply to imaginative play or even their own writing. To an adult picking them up at random, the books present a seemingly impenetrable confusion of names and terms, but children readily master this new world.

There is a lot of talk about what kinds of books we need to motivate boys to become fluent readers. I would nominate these books. Of course, there is nothing to say that girls can't enjoy them, too!

The First Three Years rolled into one!

This is the collection of the Chronicles, from Tale of the Toa, Beware the Bohrok, Makuta's Revenge, Tales of the Masks, and I do believe even the novelization of the first movie, Mask of Light.

These five books in total create the 2001-2003 storylines in the Bionicle universe, which has only been seen in comics Lego Club members get, as well as online games which aren't that active anymore.

For fans who have read the comics and/or flash videos from the game, etc, I still recommend this series for while it brings up some familiar tales, it brings up some entirely new ones unseen anywhere in the genre.
