About the Author
The AMERICAN BIBLE SOCIETY is an interdenominational, donor- supported, nonprofit ministry whose mission is to make accurate and affordable translations of the Bible available to everyone. Founded in New York City in 1816, ABS is dedicated to the purpose of presenting the Bible in compelling ways, enabling readers to experience life in its fullness through faith in Jesus Christ. ABS has a number of "firsts" in its record books: the first Bibles in hotels, the first pocket Bibles for soldiers (during the Civil war), and the first Bibles provided for the U.S. Military in 1817. The Society extends its outreach internationally through the United Bible Societies (UBS), a fellowship of 126 international Bible societies, and was instrumental in founding this global fellowship in the interest of greater ministry impact and efficiency. In 1999 alone, more than 63 million copies of the Society's publications were distributed throughout the United States and the world. The CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH VERSION was published by the American Bible Society in response to an urgent need for a translation that would reach those many millions who are not reading the Bible. The goal was a Bible that is a serious translation-not a paraphrase-that combines historical and scholarly accuracy with contemporary language that everyone can understand. The result is a Bible that resonates with all people, wherever they may be in their spiritual journey. At last, a Bible that is easy to read, yet allows for a deeper connection to the very God who created us. Never before has there been a Bible that speaks so clearly to the heart and the mind of every reader.

Best Children's Bible I've Ever Encountered
By luxcursor
I used to work for a Christian bookstore and have seen dozens of children's Bibles by various publishers. This is the best I've ever encountered. Why?

1) Accurate Bible accounts. (no extra-Biblical nonsense, like "Joseph loved his new coat so much, he even wore it when he slept!")

2) Key details of the Biblical accounts are NOT withheld or edited out. The accounts have the original meaning. (I've seen Adam and Eve stories where they just lived happily in the garden and slept under the stars, or David and Goliath stories where Goliath was smiling as he was hit with a stone.)

3) Culturally/historically relevant illustrations. Even though they are still "simple" illustrations they are the most true to the time period, culture that I've ever seen in a child's Bible for a young reader. There are some exceptions but the pictures are far from being absurd. (Another review mentioned the "bulgey-eyed" characters of another Bible. I'm familiar with it. Women are almost always depicted with pearl "Barbara Bush" earrings, Joseph sleeps on a mattress and boxspring with an orange tabby curled up at his feet, and Noah's wife carries Red Delicious apples in a basket to smiling, rather than ferocious animals. Another children's Bible we have depicts evil characters smiling sweetly while engaging in wicked activities, like trying to kill someone.)

4) Readable text in a simple-understand style for wide age span. This Bible was a gift to my 2-year old when, exasperated with our numerous but inferior children's Bibles, I commissioned my father-in-law with the nearly impossible task of finding a "good" children's Bible. Well, he came through! She loves having it read to her nightly. She loves paging through it independently and remembering the accounts. I find her doing this almost daily, unprompted by me. And I know it will serve her well until she can read the text for herself. It even has parent pages. Great for the family.

5) Rather complete. This is one of the most complete collection of Bible accounts from the Old and New Testaments that I've ever seen.

6) Fantastic price.

The other types of Bibles may seem innocent enough, but I worried about what they would imply about history or culture by their anachronistic and Western (and at times cheesy) text and artwork. To conclude, I feel this Bible does a good job supporting my goal of teaching my daughter accurately (by what is said and seen) from the very start.

(Thanks Grampa. You've done excellently!)

A Good Children's Bible for Strong Readers
By Shawn Woo
This review is based on my comparison of 20 different children’s Bibles (CB). I first determined the appropriate age group of the Bibles, then pinned them on the scale of dynamic (sense for sense) or formal (word for word) equivalence:

D2 (Most dynamically equivalent, a rather “free” translation with creative license)
D1 (More dynamically equivalent)
N (Neutral, somewhat dynamic and somewhat formal)
F1 (More formally equivalent)
F2 (Most formally equivalent, a rather “rigid” translation with little variance from the original text)

Then, I used the following criteria to judge the usefulness of the Bibles:

Scriptural Fidelity: Does the CB accurately convey the message of the original text of Scripture without adding extraneous details or subtracting essential details?
Theology: Does the CB feature orthodox and appropriate theological interpretation that highlight the main idea and purpose of the text? Does it look ahead to Jesus Christ who fulfills the whole Scripture (Matthew 5:17-20)?
Comprehensiveness: Does the CB include most of the stories from the original text of Scripture?
Storytelling: Is the narrative flow of the CB fluent, clear, engaging, and inspiring?
Illustration: Are the accompanying illustrations in the CB colorful, beautiful, imaginative, intelligible, and faithful to the cultural context and the original text of Scripture?
Interactiveness: Does the CB involve the reader in dialogue? Does it include questions, summaries, and other interactive features that facilitate understanding and encourage personal response?

Read and Learn Bible: Stories from the Old and New Testaments
Edited by Eva Moore and Illustrated by Duendes del Sur and Walter Carzon
Scholastic, Inc., New York, American Bible Society, 2011

Kindergarten; F1
Scriptural Fidelity: 5 of 5
Theology: 3 of 5
Comprehensiveness: 4 of 5 (102 Stories)
Storytelling: 3 of 5
Illustration: 4 of 5
Interactiveness: 3 of 5
Total: 3.7

Comment: The Read and Learn Bible sticks pretty closely to the original text of Scripture. It offers no additional theological interpretation. However, it has helpful study notes interspersed throughout the stories. For example, a study note explains that “The Hebrew word for Adam means ‘of the ground’ or ‘from the red earth’ and is also used as a general word for ‘humankind’ or ‘people’” (15). The illustrations are colorful and beautiful, but most characters have staid expressions.

Awesome Bible for Beginning Readers!
By Classical Homeschooling Mom
My (...) son has been learning to read. I checked out a popular beginning reader book from the library and he hated it. He's been asking to read the Bible, so when I found this I was so excited! It's written at around a late first to early second grade reading level. The stories are short enough that he can read one every day and the pictures are great (full color illustration on every page done in the same style that's on the cover). It's really improved his reading confidence!

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4-The third installment in the saga introduces a kitten whose family thinks he is so remarkable that they call him "Wonderful Alexander." One morning, he sets out to explore the world. But soon he finds himself stuck in a tree, and is rescued by Jane, a black kitten with wings. She leads him to her home, and there he meets the other Catwings. His rescuer can only say the words "Me" and, when she's frightened, "Hate." (Readers of Catwings Return [Orchard, 1989] will recall that she had a terrifying experience that left her mute.) Alexander is adopted by the Catwings' human caretaker and finds himself mulling over how to thank Jane for bringing him his good fortune. When he helps her overcome her fear of speaking, all agree that he is truly wonderful. Alexander's appearance in this charming series does more than tie up the loose threads of Jane's muteness; it also sets the stage for further adventures. The story is illustrated with delicate pen-and-ink drawings colored in soft, earth-tone washes. This pocket-sized title will appeal to early chapter-book readers, fans of the earlier books, and cat lovers in general.

From Booklist
Gr. 2-4. The third book in the Catwings series features a pampered but adventurous kitten named Alexander who leaves his comfortable home to explore the world. He's soon cold, frightened, and lost in a forest, until Jane, one of the flying cats, rescues him. In gratitude, he later helps Jane regain her speech by encouraging and even bullying her into talking about a traumatic experience in her youth. Although the writing is clear and fluid, the story is less satisfying than earlier Catwings books. Perhaps it's easier to accept a cat who's part bird than a cat who's part psychoanalyst. Still, this sequel has a place in libraries, where the earlier books have a following. S. D. Schindler's delicate ink-and-watercolor artwork continues its old enchantment, giving convincing form to the flying cats and grave beauty to the fantasy. Carolyn Phelan

From Kirkus Reviews
The endearing winged cats who escaped the city to be cared for by two reliable country children (Catwings, 1988, etc.) make a third appearance in this tale of a self-important kitten from nearby who discovers that his true worth is not what he has supposed. Alexander--``the biggest, the strongest, and the loudest''--has never noticed that his sisters are ``quite tired of him,'' but when he sets out to explore the world he soon learns that his cocky preconceptions don't serve. The cow who says ``Moo'' instead of ``Mew'' is unconcerned when he corrects her; speeding trucks and rude dogs threaten; when he bolts up a tree, he can't climb down and his doting parents don't turn up to help. Enter youngest Catwing Jane, nearly mute because of an early trauma (her only words are ``Me'' and ``Hate''), to take Alexander to her home--where his parents and ``Owner'' turn out to be glad to let him stay. After Alexander cajoles and hectors Jane into confronting her fears and describing them with her first real words, the Catwings agree: Alexander is ``wonderful.'' Brief as it is, this is a deftly crafted bildungsroman. The book's small format and Schindler's delicate illustrations add to the enchantment. A first chapter book to charm both newly independent readers and their elders. (Fiction. 5-10) -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

wonderful alexander and the catwings
By A Customer
Alexander is a cat. He is the biggest and the strongest but very bossy. He went off exploring. He was chased by dogs. He got stuck in a tree. One of the catwings (Jane) came to help him. She brought him home to his family. The owner of his family said to Susan that she could keep Alexander. I liked the book because Alexander goes on adventures, He goes to a farm and sees a cow and says to the cow don't say moo say mew. I think you should buy this book if you like cats you will like this book.

Catwings Soar
By Libby P. Meggs
The Catwings books are little treasures. Ursula LeGuin's skilled, poignant, humorous writings and her sensitive insights on genuine, deep emotions combine to entertain, create suspense, and tug at the reader's heartstrings all at the same time. S.D. Schindler's beautiful pen-and-ink illustrations capture the delightful personalities of the cats without becoming cartoons. He makes us believe that cats with wings are entirely possible and real. This amazing illustrator should have received more recognition over the years, for he is a master.

The Catwings books are not only for children. Adults who love cats and who can believe that all things are possible will revere these wonderful stories, as well.

More magical Catwings
By Renate Simon
This is the 3rd installment in noted author Ursula K. LeGuin's excellent Catwings series. It is as good as the others. The Catwings stories are the adventures of 5 young winged cats that were born to a normal alley cat in a gritty, realistic city. They find their way to an old barn in the country and 2 kind children who look after them, and keep their secret . Alexander is a normal cat who is sure he is destined to do something wonderful. As a kitten, he goes exploring, gets lost, and finds his way to the Catwings and their humans. There he finds friendship, a home, and does indeed something wonderful by helping the youngest Catwing, Jane. A bad experience while a kitten caused her to lose the ability to speak, she can only say 'me' and 'hate'. Alexander helps her overcome her trauma and speak again. This book would be perhaps useful for children with a trauma in their lives. These slender little books with great illustrations can be read by adults, and do not talk down to children. They are warm, and firmly rooted in our world, but have the feel of a magical fairy tale with the winged cats and talking animals. They leave you wanting more. LeGuin is a well known science fiction and fantasy author, who hopefully will write more young children's stories of this caliber.

Grade 4-7–Soon after the sudden death of his beloved father, 10-year-old Elijah Breeze, nicknamed Jumper, moves with his bereaved mother from suburban Connecticut to Harlem, where she grew up, to live with his grandmother. He experiences culture shock from this abrupt change and still struggles with his grief. To make things worse, his mother has signed him up for a coed summer baseball camp where he has to cope with his undeveloped hitting and catching skills as well as a bully named Marcus. As the summer progresses, Jumper makes new friends and establishes a close relationship with his empathetic, knowledgeable coach. And, he eventually gains Marcus's respect after a series of near fights. Although the baseball action permeating this message-laden, quick-reading novel often lacks the excitement of other sports stories, Robinson (who is Jackie Robinson's daughter) has created two intriguing protagonists and a group of equally colorful secondary characters (girls and boys). Regardless of their interest in baseball, readers will identify with these youngsters and appreciate the simple story.–Jack Forman, Mesa College Library, San Diego

Safe at Home
Sharon Robinson. Scholastic, $16.99 (160p) ISBN 0-439-67197-3
The author of several nonfiction books about her father, Jackie Robinson (Promises to Keep: How Jackie Robinson Changed America), offers a solid first novel about a likable 10-year-old who comes to terms with some big changes. Jumper's father died six months earlier of a heart attack, and the boy and his mother have moved from suburban Connecticut into his grandmother's Harlem brownstone. Missing his father and his friends, Jumper does not look forward to a hot, lonely summer in the city. Moreover, his mother didn't want to send him away to basketball camp, so he is going to a neighborhood baseball camp, playing a sport in which he has little interest or experience. Worse yet, the captain of his team is Marcus, a cocky, ace player who derisively dubs Jumper "the boy from the 'burbs" and scoffs at his minimal skills. Luckily, some additional characters give the hero a boost and leaven the proceedings. A supportive, perceptive coach offers to give Jumper extra help and names him team co-captain, emphasizing the need for cooperation between him and Marcus ("It takes two wings to fly"). Jumper's growing friendship with several other campers, including Marcus's plucky sister, also add dimension to the tale, along with some affecting moments—as when Jumper discovers his father's old baseball glove ("It fit perfectly"). The tale may end predictably, but readers will happily stick with these characters, and ball fans will appreciate the play-by-play account of on-diamond action. Ages 12-up. (July)

So Good, I Read it Twice
By A Customer
I liked Safe At Home. This book is about making new friends and how important it is to try to overcome the obstacles in life. I liked this book because the story is just like mine. When I moved to CA, I had to make new friends and so did the main character, Jumper Breeze.

When Jumper moved to Harlem, he had no friends and was bad at baseball. Instead of basketball camp, like he wanted, he had to go to baseball camp. Jumper didn't like it at first, because it was too hard for him. But he kept working on his skills and got better and now, Jumper doesn't want to stop.

When he started camp he met Nia, Dakota, and Sabrina. He also saw Kelvin and Marcus who he met at the arcade. Kelvin was nice to him, but Jumper had a few confrontations with Marcus.

Unfortunately, Jumper became co-captains with Marcus on their baseball team. It was hard at first because they weren't friends. But the coach forced them to cooperate with each other. Jumper learned the importance of working hard as a team even if not all your teammates are your friends.

I give this book five stars. It was so good, I read it twice!

entertains as it touches the heart.
By KidsReads
Ten-year-old Elijah Breeze, aka Jumper, is going through a very tough time in his life. His dad just died, totally unexpectedly from a heart attack. Instead of staying in their Connecticut home with all the painful memories, raw reminders and empty rooms, Jumper's mom decides they'll move to Harlem in New York to live with Jumper's grandmother. So now Jumper faces a lonely summer in an unfamiliar place.

But that's not all. His mom and grandmother sign him up for baseball camp, even though Jumper despises baseball. Basketball is his game; he loves to play and he has a lot of talent. The only time he even attempted baseball turned out to be a disaster; he couldn't hit, was unable to catch, and even sprained his ankle. And to top it off, he felt bored. Jumper ended up quitting the sport, and that really upset his dad, who despised quitters. Jumper is all for skipping out on the four-week camp, but his mom finds a new job and doesn't want him staying home alone. Unfortunately, Jumper has no choice in the matter.

When Jumper arrives at baseball camp, he finds that it's even worse than he feared. Marcus is there. Jumper met Marcus briefly at the neighborhood arcade and found him to be rude, insulting and intimidating --- definitely not friend material. And as camp progresses, Jumper learns that Marcus is quite talented at baseball and not very patient with those who aren't. But their coach sees a lot of potential in Jumper, and pushes the two boys to work together. As Jumper slowly learns the sport and eventually starts to make some friends, he realizes that quitting something that's difficult isn't always the answer.

SAFE AT HOME is Sharon Robinson's first novel, though she is no novice at either writing or baseball. She proves her talent for both in this book that entertains as it touches the heart. She really captures the spirit of Harlem and her people, and especially young Jumper, who is dealing with the impossible situation of losing a parent and moving to a different place.

One man's vision and energy to help city kids with baseball

Become an insider to the humor and private life of the writer's encounters and adventures home and abroad; a selection from over 100 letters written in six years.

The bullets ricocheting off the Chicago El tracks made the Little League boys hit the dirt. Young inner city boys living within eight blocks of Lake Michigan yet some had never seen the lake. Yet these boys were enjoying a wonderful, well made base ball park that was recently just a trash filled vacant lot.The author's life encompasses from the unbelievable to the proven believable in organizational skills.
I had a friend whose co-workers named him "Action Jackson." That describes author Bob Muzikowski's life to a tee. He, many times over, converted trashed property near each house he lived in within the inner city where he wanted to make changes in the lives of disadvantaged kids. At one location he organized 600+ kids into happy and successful Little League players, with sponsors, uniforms, and some coaches and umpires who knew from their own life paths how to relate to kids like they had been.

Only from shear personality and overdrive energy did Bob create his "God Cares" baseball teams for boys and girls. Where else but in the inner city could a man shooting out of a ten story high window making "Wooka, Wooka" sounds and sending bullets across center field into a building behind the backstop? Where else would the game umpires, themselves reformed young men with a past, gather on the mound and begin a calm debate? "The guy's shooting an Uzi. It's not an Uzi but a Browning nine millimeter. No you are both wrong. That's a Glock!" It is an Amazon book about reaching inner city youth with Little League baseball.

Grade 5-8–This sequel to The Akhenaten Adventure (Scholastic, 2005) stands completely on its own. John and Philippa Gaunt, 12-year-old twins, are descended from a long line of djinn and have magical powers. Philippa has been practicing a dice game of particular interest to their kind, and meets the Blue Djinn of Babylon when she is accused of cheating in the annual tournament. Unfortunately, she is wrongly convicted, and John finds out that someone has stolen the Solomon Grimoire, which contains incantations that give the user limitless power over all djinn. In order to convince the Blue Djinn of her innocence, and to protect everyone from misuse of the Grimoire, the twins set off for Istanbul to recover the book. What neither one knows is that they have been set up and are walking into a trap. Once it is sprung, it will take all of Johns strength and intelligence to save Philippa; and she will need all of her cunning to survive. This wild ride has suspense and action, exotic locations, magic, and evil villains–all of the elements necessary for a good fantasy adventure. While some of the characters are two-dimensional, and some of the plot is a tad predictable, the main characters are totally believable in all their faults. Readers will also enjoy the original concept–that of the djinn society hidden among us. Give this book to readers looking for something different, maybe as an alternative to Jonathan Strouds Bartimaeus trilogy (Hyperion).–Saleena L. From Booklist
Gr. 5-8. Featuring adolescents initiated into a magical society invisible to unwitting "mundanes," the Children of the Lamp series nods vigorously to Harry Potter. The difference from many of its competitors, though, is the finesse with which it does so--no less apparent here than in The Akhenatan Adventure (2005), which most children will want to read first. Kidnapped by the ruthless Blue Djinn to succeed her as djinnkind's ultimate arbiter of justice, newly fledged djinn Philippa has been imprisoned to prepare her for the unwanted job. As family and friends work to find a more suitable replacement, Philippa's twin, John, must rescue her from an underground palace, accessed through an American military base in Iraq--an up-to-the-minute element that fits oddly with the narrative's old-fashioned tone (at one point, John creeps about "Indian-style," and what 12-year-old New Yorker uses words like quite and indeed?). At the same time, though, the plot also feels more controlled than its predecessor, with greater limitations to the magic preventing the heroes' paths from seeming artificially smooth. Humorous and enthralling
By KidsReads
In the second volume of the Children of the Lamp trilogy, djinn (genie) twins John and Philippa Gaunt are suffering the powerlessness caused by a cold New York winter (djinn need heat in order to use their powers). Dybbuk, a djinn visitor, shows them that sitting in a sauna will temporarily jumpstart their forces. But is Dybbuk setting them up somehow?

The twins play a trick on their wealthy housekeeper's own worthless housekeeper. In the process, John meets Frank Vodyannoy, the resident djinn of the famous Dakota apartment building. Mr. Vodyannoy warns John to watch out for relatives of Iblis, the bad djinn the twins defeated in THE AKHENATEN ADVENTURE. He gives John a gift --- one emergency wish to use when he's desperate.

Philippa spies her mother arguing with Ayesha, who is the famously hard-hearted Blue Djinn, the leader of all djinn, good and bad. When Philippa asks her mother about the argument, she mysteriously denies it took place. Yet she appears sad and even refuses to discuss the topic of the Blue Djinn with John. However, John learns that Ayesha is searching for a replacement.

Philippa competes in her first Djinnverso Tournament, a gambling dice game, and meets Ayesha, who makes cryptic remarks to her, including the admonition to remember "it's nothing personal." Philippa agrees to this ominous warning although she has no clue what the powerful djinn is talking about. But soon Philippa is framed --- as a cheater! --- and is banned from all Djinnverso tournaments for eternity.

An enormously important book of djinn magic called the Solomon Grimoire, which contains powerful incantations that could enslave any djinn, has been stolen by a Blue Djinn guard who now regrets his actions. The thief will only hand over the book to John and Philippa, but they must undertake a dangerous journey in order to meet with him. Are they up to this urgent and frightening challenge? Are they heading for disaster? Their decision to endanger themselves is partly swayed by Philippa's hope that pleasing Ayesha will cause her to revoke Philippa's Djinnverso ban. So, traveling by whirlwind, train, boat and by foot, the twins head off for their adventure.

Readers of THE AKHENATEN ADVENTURE once again will be enthralled with the quirky details, the humorous asides, the tongue-in-cheek cultural references, and the breakneck pace as Philippa and John whirl headlong into their far-flung exploits. THE BLUE DJINN OF BABYLON feels like a classic (as does the previous book) and will appeal not only to fantasy lovers but to anyone who enjoys an enthralling and original read.

Let's play "Find the Djinn"
By Amanda Richards
This second book in the “Children of the Lamp” series can be read without reading the first, but why would anyone want to do that? Both books are excellent adventures for both young adults and adults who think they’re still young, and should not be separated at any cost.

We take up the story with John and Phillipa Gaunt, the djinn twins from New York, suffering from the winter blues around the time of the Halloween festivities. Being fiery beings, cold weather tends to send their powers into hibernation, necessitating the summoning of a djinn doctor who specializes in holistic health treatments, and of course lots of accompanying tonic.

The twins’ mother Layla has renounced her powers to try to lead a normal life for her family’s sake, so she keeps tight control over their magical escapades, and when the doctor’s wayward son Dybbuk (call me Buck) lets them into a little secret for recharging their magical batteries, they jump at the chance for a little magic on the side.

Their friend Mr. Rakshasas (an Irish-accented Indian djinn who lives in a lamp) has written a very significant and important book, and at the book-launching party their kindly Uncle Nimrod introduces them to the who’s who of djinn society, including Stan Bunyip of Australia and David Kabikaj of Canada, as well as the Cruella de Ville of evil djinn, Mimi de Ghule. At this meeting Phillipa learns that Ayesha the Blue Djinn (leader, judge and jury of all djinn, good or evil) is almost ready to retire, and is looking for a successor.

Phillipa is an accomplished Djinnverso player (djinn poker, but with seven eight-sided dice) and enters a tournament at the Algonquin Hotel in New York, (the spot for the cleverest writers and wittiest actors, and the place where stylish insults are encouraged), but unfortunately things don’t go very well for her. To make matters worse, they learn that The Book of Solomon is missing. Solomon’s Grimoire is a powerful book that can help a djinn or magus to control many other djinn, and is normally kept in a safe place by the Blue Djinn herself.

John and Phillipa set out on a quest to recover the book, but the rescue operation hits a snag when Phillipa is kidnapped. The cavalry then springs into action, led by John, with the assistance of Uncle Nimrod, Mr. Rakshasas, the family dogs, and the crabby, competent, and never-basically-boring Mr. Groanin, (who thoughtfully packed supplies of dog food, and an enticing Kendall Mint Cake,) and this leads us to many exciting chapters fraught with danger, packed with adventure, suspense, current affairs, humor (lots of it) and magic.

Set in exciting locations such as Istanbul, Iraq and Guiana (French Guiana that is, just a whirlwind ride from Guyana in South America), this book differentiates itself from regular run of the mill fantasy stories, and prepares the stage for book three, due at the end of 2006. We can’t wait!!!

Grade 1-2–This third installment in the series puts first-grader Freddy Thresher smack dab in a classroom quandary–how to get his schoolwork done on time. When Mrs. Wushy assigns an oral report about a nocturnal animal, the boy goes overboard with his research and ends up with a broken bone in the middle of the night. Alas, the cast on his arm isn't enough to postpone the due date, but his sister and best friend help him to pull through and complete his project. McKinley's illustrations exaggerate Freddy's predicaments and underscore the sometimes nasty personalities of his sister and a classmate. Their hostile intrusions spice up this otherwise bland but solid story.– Pat Leach, Lincoln City Libraries, NE

Little boys love Ready Freddy
By David Baer
Our 8-year-old boy just loves "Ready Freddy." He has all of the books and wants the next one for his birthday. He loves to read the "Ready Freddy" stories over and over. And anything that keeps kids reading is a great investment.

Loved this!!!
By Booklover
We started this book 2 nights ago and my 6 year old loves it! He was begging for us to read more and we finished it. The book is excellent for early chapter readers as there are still some fun pictures, the font isn't intimidating for them and the words are not difficult but Ms Klein does an excellent job of throwing in some challenging ones which I love. I pre-ordered the Thanksgiving one and can't wait to see what Freddy is up to next.

Share the magic :)
By B. Alcat
This boxed set allows you to buy the first five paperbooks in the Harry Potter series at a very reasonable price. I think buying it is a good idea for:

a- those who want to give their kids/friends (or even themselves) a great gift at a very good price --> due to the fact that you will give 5 books at the price that some bookstores sell one.

b- those who are very lazy --> because it is almost certain that if you buy the first book for yourself or your children, you will end up at the same bookstore buying the other books in the series. Buying the first 5 books at the same time will save you time and money, and you will only have to return later to buy book number 6.

c- those who want to read a book that their kids will love, but that they will like to, and turn the fact that they are reading the series into a family experience.

d- those who want to motivate their children to read --> because reading Harry Potter will make them understand that there are books can offer them some things that the television cannot. If your children just hate the idea of reading, show them one of the movies based on the series, and afterwards tell them that the books have a lot to do with them, but that they are way better.

e- those who are learning English, and want to practise it in a entertaining way. And what better way to improve your grammar that reading something that is actually fun?.

f- those who aren't from an English speaking country, already have the books but want to read them in the language Rowlings wrote them --> because the reading experience is totally different (and yes, I know because I read some of the books both in Spanish, Italian and English).

g- those who are curious about the series but haven't given it a try --> because this series really grows on you, and it gets better and better, specially after book number 3.

After telling you about all the reasons why buying this boxset is a good idea, I would like to talk a little more about point g- because that was my case some years ago, even though I wasn't lucky enough to get my hands on a boxset. First, though, I would like to comment upon the fact that I know very few people who haven't liked the first book, and that have given up after a few chapters. I don't know anybody that has given up after reading the first 3 books. Yes, the first 2 books are very simple and short, but they help to set up the parallel world J.K. Rowlings is writing about. The 3rd book already shows a great promise of how the series are going to be like.

In my case, I bought the first 4 books at the same time, a Saturday afternoon. I read the first 2 books ("Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets") rather quickly, and wondered why everybody including my sister loved them so much. They weren't long, and they were rather good, but nothing out of the ordinary. It is only while I was reading the 3rd book ("Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban"), that very same night, that I understood what the hype was all about. Even though when I finished it it was high time to go to bed, I couldn't help but starting the 4th book ("Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire"), even though I was tired, and it really was much bigger than the others. It also was much more entertaining, and noticeably more complicated. Understandably (for those who have read these books, at least), I started reading it and couldn't stop until Sunday's afternoon. I was tired, but very happy of having discovered the magic, something I wouldn't have done if I had stopped after reading the first two books...

From that point onwards, I'm a "pottermaniac". I've read all the books in the series, and I thoroughly enjoy them. Yes, I like other kinds of books too, and I'm an adult with a degree in Political Science, but that doesn't mean that I cannot find these books engaging. One of the wonderful things about the Harry Potter series is that very diverse people can like it, for very different reasons. Despite that, all readers share something special, the ability to share the magic. Be one of us, and have fun :)

Great Series for kids and adults alike.
By Casey M. Hunt
Rowling has created a wonderful series that is multi-genred and applicable and entertaining for multiple demographics. It's not that there has never been anything like it before that makes the series so attractive- it's that Rowling manages to take multiple types of literature and combine them into one beautifully written package that has something for everyone. A wonderful sense of high fantasy, mystery, thrill, love, and even adventure. Any child will be thoroughly engaged from the very first few lines in the book and any adult can read right along with their child without struggling through the coddling or talking down that most children's literature is so riddled with nowadays.

This is a fantastic step in the right direction in the overall genre of children's literature in that we are moving away from expecting so little of kids and letting them open up a few hundred pages of text and ask them to recall tiny bits of information, digest plot twist, and really understand characterization.

Everyone Should Read Harry Potter
By J. L. White
Harry Potter is the best box set I have read thus far. There are other books that are good in different ways, but none quite do it like Harry. The first four books are great, the fifth book I thought dragged on a little too long and didn't have as much of the action and adventure as the other ones. It was good nontheless, but being the longest book without as much in it, it was just not as good. I think this book was used as a bridge though to fill us in on a lot of details that we will need to know for the future. Even if you have seen the movies, please read these, they are so much better. I think I liked Book 4 the best since that was the only one besides Book 5 that I hadn't seen the movie first. I loved the Quidditch World Cup etc. It does not matter how old you are, these books are timeless. Rowling does a wonderful job, I can't wait till I get my hands on the sixth one.
