"Judy Moody was in a mood not a good mood a bad mood" by Megan Mcdonald. Judy Moody is a smart 3rd grader who has a little brother named Stink, a cat named Mouse, and a best friend named Rocky and found a new best friend named Frank. Judy is startimg 3rd grade at last.mr.todd gave them the project of a me collage ,in that she had to have a club so she started 1 called the t.p.club. Rocky ,stink frank ,and JUDY were in the club. This book did not tell the setting. The moral of the story is you will make friends.I liked this book because it kind of relates 2 me.(YOU WILL LIKE THIS BOOK )

I just love the laughter in the book Judy Moody it's just funny to me and funny to some other people. I also enjoy the characters in the book because everybody in the book gets grumpy emptily Judy Moody she's always grumpy.
Other thing I liked was the plot it always changes like she's at home than goes to school than they will be playing outside. Rocky is Judy's friend and they always play together. Judy Moody is funny because she wore pajamas to school I personally thought that was funny. Judy this didn't like this girl named Jessica Flinch. Judy always gets mad at Stink about pretty much everything, hey I don't blame her for getting mad at him for some things. Do you want hear Judy's flash back on the first day of school? Well hear it goes it started out when her mom called her to get up Judy didn't want to get, she did and oh my gosh she was grumpy that day as usual. I thought the ending was funny because it was just funny you should find out why it's so funny and gross at the end! It's just a cool book when you have time to read a book you should read Judy Moody.

*Starred Review* Gr. 6-8. McWhorter's critically acclaimed adult book Carry Me Home (2002) focused on the civil rights movement in Birmingham. In this compelling but challenging children's book, McWhorter tackles the national civil rights movement from Brown v. the Board of Education to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. In 1963 McWhorter was a sixth-grader at a segregated Birmingham school, and throughout, this account is both factual and personal. She discusses her feelings as a white child in the South, and she focuses in on the many ways in which both white and black children were involved in the movement: the brave young people who desegregated schools throughout the South, the 1,500 Birmingham students who protested and were attacked by dogs and doused by fire hoses, and white students protesting integration. In the book's most wrenching photograph, two young white children stare at the camera as a black man hangs, lynched, in the background. The breadth and depth of McWhorter's book is exemplary. In addition to learning about King and Rosa Parks, children will read of SNCC, Fred Shuttlesworth, Bayard Rustin, and Autherine Lucy. Some of the more arcane issues such as disagreements between civil rights organizations are beyond the audience, and, unfortunately, there are no source notes. But tempering the complex social and historical information is an open design laden with photographs and a childcentric viewpoint that brings this important history close. John Green

Another exceptional book from Diane McWhorter

In A Dream Of Freedom, Diane McWhorter gives the 9-12 year old reader a concise history of the American civil rights movement between the years 1954-1968. McWhorter covered some of this material in her earlier civil rights chronicle, Carry Me Home which won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction. A Dream of Freedom opens with a rousing foreward by the legendary Rev Fred Shuttlesworth who is one of the central figures in the story that follows. The book focuses on the turbulent period between 1954-1968 when the growing civil rights movement battled institutional segregation, violence and bloodshed. McWhorter's account is both disturbing and inspirational. She is an excellent storyteller with a straightforward and unflinching delivery. She closes with a poignant epilogue and bibliography that encourages further research. This book is well organized and illustrated with over 120 photographs and collages. A Dream of Freedom should be in every school and public library.

Spectacular book!

We were the first to check this book out at our library, the day after Rosa Parks died. What a lucky find! We homeschool, and this has been the PERFECT book to fully educate our 8 and 11 year old daughters about the Civil Rights Movement. The chapters are short enough for a kid to digest, and yet manage to completely cover the subject at hand, and the language keeps them interested. You won't find a better book on this subject material for juveniles.

A personal touch of Diane Mcworter, a white child growing up right next door to all these events and oblivious to what was happening. It has taken her years of research to see the truth that was swept under the rug of the white community.

About the Author
Mary Rose received her Bachelors and Masters degrees from Marshall University in Huntington, WV, and a Masters in Educational Leadership from the University of Central Florida. She has been a classroom teacher for 37 years and is currently teaching fourth grade in Orange County Public Schools in Orlando, Florida. She is active in state and national assessment projects, including the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP - the "Nation's Report Card") and the New Standards Project. She has been trained as a scorer for the Florida State Writing Assessment and helped to write the reading portion of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. She presents at state and national conferences and is a national consultant on improving scores on writing assessments.

Looking over the comprehension books, I felt the reading passages were grade level appropriate. Sometimes it will be listed as 2nd or 1st and be too difficult or easy. These would have pleased Goldilocks.

Revised: A waste of your money!!

This is a revised edition of a book that was part of a series so famously gruesome that it was the most frequently challenged book of the nineties. This was not because of the stories themselves, which are mostly retellings of pretty well known urban legends and ghost stories, but because of the ORIGINAL artwork by Stephen Gammell.

Those illustrations are so lurid, frightening, and demented that several of them frighten me to this day, as an adult.

Helquist is a talented artist to be sure, but don't make the mistake of purchasing this new edition of More Scary Stories if you are truly looking to be scared: invest in an older copy: You won't regret it. (Unless of course you are buying it for a small child or nightmare-prone preteen, in which case I would NOT recommend the older editions.)

PLEASE READ!

This collection of folklore is absolutely wonderful. Alvin Schwartz writes in a style that is both easy to read and has a lasting effect that tells the story in a unique way for readers of all ages.

But...

I am VERY disappointed in the artwork. I have the original copies that were printed in the early 90's with illustrations by Steven Gammell. If you wish to see a some examples of his works, here are some links:

I'm not knocking Brett Helquist; his style is well suited for "Series of Unfortunate Events" but not Alvin Schwartz' "Scary Stories" collection. Some reviewers wrote that this collection was not scary at all; I beg to differ....

The reason the stories are scary is because of the ART! There's the overused saying, "A picture is worth a thousand words" ... that sums up Steven Gammell. I first read these books in third grade and they stuck with me ever since, simply because of the terribly gruesome and disturbing imagery. The stories by themselves are uninteresting and honestly, Brett Helquist's illustrations do not give this book series justice whatsoever!!

I also realize that the older copies that have Steven Gammell's illustrations are hard to find here on Amazon. This saddens me... If you happen to find the originals, PLEASE buy them. You won't regret it.

Awesome Read Aloud

Kindergarten and first-grade students love story time. However, this summer I am teaching children who have completed third grade. They have that "I'm too cool to have a story read to me" attitude. That is until one of my students checked this book out of the library. Every day they would beg me to read stories from the book -- and not just one, but two, three or four. They would grab their chairs and circle as close as they could to me. One of the students would always run and turn out the lights to help with the atmosphere. Using different voices, many pauses and the build up of suspense, I was able to scare the living bejeebeez out of them many times. They loved it! Thank you for giving me a book that's "cool" for third/fourth grade story time! I would highly recommend it to teachers of grades 3-6.

Better than "Dear Dumb Diary #1"!

After reading the first "Dear Dumb Diary", I knew I had to read the next one as soon as possible. I was sure it wouldn't be as entertaining. I was wrong!

"My Pants Are Haunted" may sound like a stupid title for a book, but I'm still laughing! Jamie Kelly is a hoot, from describing her off-beat parents to her elation on her cool new Bellazure Jeans to the conclusion that her pants are HAUNTED!!! (Best part in the book: Her pants 'decided to join the conversation' in front of her crush!) Jim Benton never fails to entertain in his works; highly recommended to the 'tweens' group!

Kids have you heard of the book DEAR DUMB DIARY? Well if you haven't, this book is funny. Also it is interesting because the girls in a middle school fall in love with Hudson, the cute guy in the school. Even though I think he looks ugly in the picture of him on page 7 of the book.

Three girls decide to give another girl a much needed makeover. This is a part of the book I mostly enjoyed. Make overs are when someone changes their way of dressing. The girl who gets the make over, Margaret, wears the same thing almost everyday. Two girls, Jamie the main character and the author of the diaries & her best friend Isabella take Margaret shopping and buy her new popular clothing. After Margaret becomes popular she decides to go back to being herself and to wear her usual clothes and Hudson notices her.That's when the problem begins.

Well,I think you guys should read this book because,when you are feeling down you can change your mood to a happy one.

I recommend this book to girls 7 or older because it is written as a diary.

If you like funny, this is a book for you.
It's about a 10 year old girl named Jaime Kelly, and her strange days that she shares by writing in her Dumb Diary.
Her mom bought her a pair of jeans (the ones all the girls were dying for.) Jaime felt like a princess in her new fashionable jeans. The next day she went to school in her fabulous jeans. That wasn't her best idea! She ran into some crazy things, like passing wind when her crush would walk by. She figured that her pants where haunted. She thought they were haunted only when she wore them, but she only figured that out after she gave her jeans away to the most popular girl. Meanwhile, her best friend acts as the popularity police (the girl who tells you which level of popularity you are on.)
If you like watching Lizzie McGuire you'll love Dear Dumb Diary. It has 2 normal best friends, the popular girl, the popular guy, the nickname master, and of course, nerds. The funniest book in the world!

This is the "funniest book in the world"! Or at least that's what my 8 y.o. daughter says.
But she's not too far from the truth. I spent hilarious moments reading it with her.
It contains many intentional typos, but it's because it's supposed to be written by "little kidz". Also a few jokes can be kind of racy, so if you are too sensitive, I suggest you read it along with you child as I did.
My only complaint is that it's only black&white. Yes, many comics are b&w but I just wish this was full color.

Hilarious!

I bought this for my husband to read to my 4 year old at night. They both enjoy reading it and I can hear them laughing. Our son is still learning Spanish but he even enjoys just looking at the pictures since it is written in a comic format, not a chapter book.

Vert funny for kids and parents. But the orthography has many errors, if the intention is to make the kid learn/practice Spanish It is not the book.
