The other side of Jango Fett. The man behind the mask.

This book was way better and more interesting to read than the other books about Boba Fett. It has more depth than the Boba Fett Dark Horse Comics. If you have not read this book, let me tell you that you are missing out on a lot!

The story speaks of relationships and the circle of life. You can relate to Boba Fett as you read about his relationship with his father, Jango Fett. It reminds you of young Anakin Skywalker who has a mother but no father. You get the opposite where Boba has a father and wished he had a mother. But it draws more from that. Witness Boba grow from an innocent wishful boy into the fearsome bounty hunter he becomes. It was very saddening to read about how Boba took the death of Zam Wesell, the sea-mice, and eventually his own father. Even the scene with Boba's only friend, Whrr touched me.

Boba is not the brutal killer as you think he is. This is a man who goes through many life experiences and valuable lessons. This is what made him stand out among the bounty hunters. Read this book!

What would Freud have to say?

This is a pretty decent book that coordinates very well with Star Wars Episode II and its novelization and makes me look forward to more books in the series and to Episode III (thumbs up on the cameos at the end of the book). Boba Fett, as the boy without a mother, stands in contrast to Anakin Skywalker, the boy without a father. You have to wonder how Sigmund Freud would analyze Boba Fett when he doesn't have a mother around to screw him up. Apparently it means he learns bounty hunting techniques and that you should never trust anyone. We also find out that Jango Fett is much like many fathers in our own society who are gone most of the time but still leave their sons a legacy once they are gone for good. And it is interesting to find out that young Boba Fett was an avid reader and library patron. Who would've guessed?

The Fight to Survive

... Anyway, this was a very good book. Yes, it's written for children, but it's a superb example of a book for children. There's no candy-coating of reality. Boba learns that the world is what it is. Eels eat mice and there's nothing you can do to save to mice, but sometimes the snake whose life you saved keeps you warm at night after your whole world has fallen apart. Or maybe it's a different snake, who has no debt to you but does it anyway. It's just a whole cycle, with good intentions, and conflicting desires, and the fight to survive on every side. Deeper than most children's books get, but what they ought to be. The plot falls down after Terry gets through with the events of the movie, though. The plot stops adding up to anything much, and it would have been a much cleaner ending if it was cut off just after Boba leaves Kamino for the last time. Other than that, it's a good book. And the title is just perfect for it!

The four winged catsThelma, Roger, Harriet and Jamesare content in the country barn where they live, secretly cared for by humans Hank and Susan. But they would like to see their mother, and the dumpster where they were born. Only James and Harriet make the trip, and learn that the slums are being destroyed by demolition crews. Their mother and the dumpster have moved; instead, they find a winged kitten. After a brief reunion with their mother, who now lives amidst flower pots on an apartment roof, all three felines go to the farm. Some of this repeats the first book, such as the absence of a father, the mother who bravely, and perhaps somewhat curiously, sends the children away to a better life, and the rather dull goodness of the human boy and girl. Le Guin's graceful writingespecially of the adventurous rescue of the new member of the family and in the roof sceneis sweetly illuminated by Schindler's delicately tinted drawings. Grade 2-4-- James and Harriet, the youngest and most adventurous of four winged cats, return from the country refuge that they found in Catwings (Orchard, 1988) to the inner-city slum where they were born, to see their mother again. They find a frightened winged kitten before finding their mother, the genteel Mrs. Jane Tabby. She is delighted to see her grown children and grateful that they've brought back her lost kitten. She insists that they take the kitten to safety in the country. This may grate on those who criticized as unfeeling Mrs. Jane's decision, in the first book, to send her older children off to a new life so that she could begin a new liaison unfettered, but it seems in character. Although characterization is slight, there is enough to win readers' sympathy. This gently appealing story will mean more to those who enjoyed the more vigorous first book, but it is hard to resist a story that brings a terrified, lonely kitten home to a loving family. The illustrations are engaging pen-and-ink drawings with watercolor wash. A handsome little book for middle readers. --Marilyn Iarusso, New York Public Library

greatly enjoyed all of the Catwings stories

My daughter, who is 7, greatly enjoyed all of the Catwings stories. They are well written little books that encourage early reading but make great read-aloud books as well.

Another catwing!

So, if your kids like cats, yes, 100%, buy this series. If you can find them all in a bundle, all the better, but they shouldn't be all that hard to find on their own, either online or at local used bookstores. They were pretty popular in the 80s and 90s, and remain in print to this day, but they aren't always the most challenging books, so they do manage to leave homes pretty quick, as kids need more shelf space.

They're good picks for those who have blasted through all the "early" chapter books and want a bit more challenge. The words are sometimes difficult, such as "fledglings," "remarkable," and "disapproving," so there will be some challenge, but the stories themselves are charming enough that your cat-loving child won't mind.

Nearly every page features a full-color illustration of the cats and their adventures. While some dramatic things happen to the cats, including some injuries, there's never anything truly upsetting in the images. It's hard to tell the four original catwings apart, since they're all tabbies, but that never seems to really matter.

In this book, two of the catwings go to visit their mother, only to find that their old neighborhood is being torn down. They stumble across a black kitten with wings, who seems hostile and mute. They save her and reunite the kitten with their mother, but bring little Jane home to live with them on the farm.

I loved this book when I was younger. I think that these books are for 6-8 year old kids, because as the years went by, I kept reading them, but they were for kids younger than I. I bought catwings when I was going on a road trip through the hills, and for the remainder of the trip I kept watching for flying cats. Finaly, I should say that I still enjoy this book, but I wish a series was made for older kids.

The best one yet!!

I bought this book today, and it was great! Aiden and Meg steal like ten things, and Meg makes friends with a big guy on the radio. Other people see that they are innocent, and they discover Hairless Joe's secret. But why am I telling you all this? Go buy the book and see what happens for yourself.

One of the Best Books I have Ever Read

Gordon Korman has become notorious in the modern literary world for his fast-paced action packed short series involving danger, suspense, and adventure.

But so far, the On the Run series has proved to be even more elating than any previous titles released by Korman. Aiden and Margaret Falconer-the protagonists-face a new, different danger rather than the ones Korman's other heroes face-they are fugitives from the law with more than half of the country searching for them.

Korman writes with passion. His books are not the type you might find on a summer reading list, but they are definitely worth reading. Even if you are the type of person who hates and absolutely deplores reading, this is a book you will thouroughly enjoy-instead of being throughly exasperated by your inablility to find a good read.

I highly recommend this book. It will keep you awake and reading, scanning each page, mesmerized by the writing of Korman. This book has definitely hit my top reading list, along with titles such as Angels and Demons.

This is the best series I have ever read! I couldn't stop reading them!The series is about 2 kids, Aiden and Meg Falconer trying to prove their parents innocence.They find out along the way it isn't so easy. Their parents are convicted of helping out terirists and were put in jail for life. They are wanted by a killer,known as Hairless Joe, the F.B.I., and the police. They never get boring. I recommend this series if you like books that never have a dull spot in them!

Kindergarten-Grade 2–The star of Ella the Elegant Elephant (Scholastic, 2004) returns for another adventure. Here, she wants to help in the bakery, but her mother thinks she is too little to do anything but sweep. Finally she is allowed to deliver a cake in her wooden wagon. She meets with many obstacles on her way, including bossy Belinda and a steep incline. When Ella successfully delivers the cake, she proves to herself and to her mother that she can be responsible. As in the first book, the D'Amicos create a sunny Mediterranean Elephant Island with bright pastels and colored pencil. The characters, though drawn with scant lines, have personality and charm. The story bogs down a little with dull dialogue near the beginning but picks up as the resourceful young elephant nears her goal. *Starred Review* PreS-K. Ella, who debuted in Ella the Elegant Elephant (2004), returns to show herself as a take-charge child. Ella and Mother live in Little Village, which, with its whitewashed buildings and ocean views, seems to be a pachyderm French Riviera. At her mother's bakery, Ella always asks to help. Unfortunately, Mom thinks a job such as slicing pie is too dangerous, so Ella she comes up with a job of her own--delivering a three-tiered cake in a wagon pulled by her bike. (The incongruity of this being safer than a cutting a pie seems odd.) Ella's friend hitches a ride, and, feeling helpful, asks Mr. Saw if he would like them to return his pile of library books. She then leaves Ella to finish the job, during which the cake nearly slides out of the wagon. Fortunately, Ella's magic hat and her own fortitude save the day. There are a few text glitches, but this has so much child appeal and such delightful artwork that it's hard to quibble. The pictures evoke both de Brunoff and Rey, but charming Ella makes the story her own. Especially fine are D'Amico's detailed, richly colored settings, always focused on what kids want to see. Carmela D'Amico began writing children's books when she was just five years old, while Steven D'Amico began his art career at age four by drawing dinosaurs and superheroes. Now all grown up with a child of their own, this husband-and-wife team have combined their considerable talents to create a series of bestselling picture books about a charming elephant named Ella. The D'Amicos had wanted to work together on a children's book project for years, even before they were married. "I was striving for something substantial enough to stand alone as a story, but would also serve to showcase Steven's talents," Carmela says. A Wonderful Adventure on the Elephant Islands!

In Ella's second book, more of Ella's island and its occupants are revealed. Ella takes on a challenging errand to help her mother and their bakery that provides a more in-depth view of the island. Beautifully written and illustrated, the character and morals (strong, yet sweet) and fantastic illustrations couldn't be more pleasing. I intend to "gift" this book to all of my grandchildren! Wonderful, well-imagined picturebook series

I really love the "Ella" series... The books are nice and sweet, and presents a marvelously imagined, self-contained world that will strongly appeal to little kids. It has a similar feel to the "Curious George" and "Babar" books, except without all the weird, disturbing undertones that make those classics a bit troublesome. A great choice for some fun books that you don't have to worry about. (ReadThatAgain)

Great practice for elementary Science Olympiad Grasp a Graph

This was a great workbook to use for the 3-5 graders on the Grasp a Graph Science Olympiad team. The sheets gave the kids lots of practice with interpreting different types of graphs. Shortfall of the book is that it hardly has any exercises in which the kids actually graph the data.

Grade 5-8?The hardships of the Revolutionary Army at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-78 have become symbolic of patriotism and perseverance. This novel recounts the experience through the eyes of 11-year-old Abby Stewart, whose family lives near the encampment. Abby's childlike yet perceptive diary records her varying emotions toward the soldiers?curiosity, pity, anger, revulsion, enthusiasm?as she observes and interacts with them. Although Gregory's overall tone is positive, she doesn't neglect the downside of army life (disease, desertion, thievery) or the horrors of war. Daily events?chores (especially cooking and laundry), amusements, trials, worries, family interactions?are smoothly woven into the story. The Winter of Red Snow gives readers an interesting and realistic look at the Revolutionary War. However, the quaint language ("I could speak not") is awkward. A two-page epilogue fills readers in on these fictional characters' fates, and a lengthy historical note provides documentation on life in 18th-century America.?Ann W. Red Snow, Cold Tears

The Winter of Red Snow (Valley Forge) / 0-590-22653-3

Like almost all of the Dear America books, there's a wealth of fascinating history here, from the big picture look at the American army during the winter of 1777 to the day-to-day life details, like cleaning a chimney by lowering a flapping rooster down it! As is typical for the Dear America books, the author presents a balanced view of a complicated situation: although the narrator and her family are avidly patriotic, they do not fail to notice that the wintering army isn't above robbing them near-blind to feed and clothe the soldiers.

Nor does our little 11-year-old narrator much care for the harsh treatment of one of the black freedmen in the army - she is angered that the white soldiers will not treat the black soldiers with the respect and honor they deserve. The narrator's older sister also provides a useful look at the practice of "Bounty Shirts" - the pretty girl sews her name into a shirt for a soldier, hoping to snag a handsome husband. Initially disappointed that her gift goes to an 'ugly' soldier, she later realizes that the soldier was kind, polite, and honest and decides that she values those qualities more than looks or bearing.

Though violence is kept to a relative minimum (no battles are pitched in the narrator's front yard), there are quite a few hangings and whippings witnessed by the narrator. There are also numerous visits to the army hospital, where the reader is shown several amputations, as well as a trough full of amputated hands and feet. Small children may be disturbed by the imagery of soldiers walking barefoot through the snow, leaving bloody footprints behind them. It is also worth noting that several small children die in a skating accident on a thawing pond. Oddly, the "George Washington praying" legend is repeated here, even though almost no historians give it any credence. I don't know why the author chose to include it, but there you are.

The Winter of Red Snow, by Kristiana Gregory, is a great book about the Revolutionary War. It is easy to understand and explains much of the War. Two of the main characters are Mr. and Mrs. George Washington. Therefore, you learn a little bit about them and what they were possibly like.
         This Book is a diary of a young girl 11 years of age, named Abigail. She lives 18 miles out of Pennsylvania duringthe war. Her small town is Valley Forge. The 13 Colony's army has camped there during the harsh winter. Many end up with Small Pox or amputated hands andfeet.
         This story goes along with Abigail for six months. The army helps her life in many ways, although it can also be very frustrating and annoying. Abigail her self lives with her family. She is one of three girls, the middle one. Her mom gives birth to a baby boy on the first page of the book. Her mom although has given birth to six sons before whom all died through terrible winters. Johnny is the new sons name, and he lives through winter and grows to be healthy. Abigail's Father is a shoemaker and slaves all winter long to make shoes for the thousands of soldiers without. Abigail is closest to her sister Elisabeth who is 16. They both sew jackets with their name embroidered on the inside. The two girls eventually give the coats to a soldier to wear. Elisabeth's jacket wearer returns and falls in love with her. The women in her family receive the job of doing General Washington's laundry; because of the weekly visit to his house, they become friends with him.
         In this book, it clearly laid out the important events of this war. It explained them more clearly than the text book and made it come together. It also showed the gruesome but true facts about poor soldiers who fought this war for all Americans. This is a great book to read for a Revolutionary War experience.
