Not the best in this series.

My son and I have read all of the Fly Guy books and this is the weakest of them all. As you could expect, this is the "Little Old Lay Who Swallowed A Fly" story with Fly Guy in the leading role. I thought the concept lacked imagination and is just a convenient excuse for getting another Fly Guy book on the shelves. My son complained the story "is too short" and ranked this story as his least favorite of the Fly Guy books. I agree. Tedd Arnold is phoning it in on this one, wait for it to arrive in your local library.

Not as much to read in this one. Still loved it!

My son is in love with this series of Tedd Arnold books. Fly Guy has been his favorite since he began reading. The illustrations are perfect. My son is 7 now and was hoping for more actual reading when we received There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Fly Guy. He draws Fly Guy perfectly by memory! Hopefully the next in his series will have more to read.

It's tough to find books at my son's reading level that excite him. The fly guy books always fit the bill. With silly boy humor and a well laid out text for early readers I recomend these books to all of his friend's parents.

Clifford the big red dog has become a big franchise. The repetitiveness of the series soon becomes boring to adults. Basic plot: Clifford gets in trouble, but he's such a good dog, it always works out in the end. BUT, the kids in my library like them. They check them out over and over and the lessons that are taught and the good fun makes them good, but not great books.

very good book for my 3rd grader

This book provides solid exercises for important grade 3-4 words. It arranges them in 10 groups then teaches each group with vivid activities and test questions. The contents are well designed. Be careful that this book may be too easy for many 4th grade students. In my case, my 3rd grader found it perfect. She finished it in 5 weeks. Word learning should not stop with one book. For similar word drills, I found Beestar ([...]) weekly exercises pretty good, too. My child's vocabulary is pretty outstanding in her class - thanks to such progressive word programs.

At first, my daughter found this a liitle difficult, but now she is enjoying it and is learning a lot. I think she will be as prepared as possible for the 4th grade!

Good Book

I bought this for my 4th grader whose vocabulary was not up to par. The activities and tests reinforces the words learnt and it is such great fun while learning. He is quite enthused and can't wait for the next set of words, he's actually started using some of the words learnt. The only drawback is there are quite a few words that he already knows.

This is a great book for teachers! The new common core standards call for a greater emphasis on nonfiction in the primary grades- and this is the perfect resource. Nonfiction picture books make great read alouds and expose children to different text structures and ideas. I highly recommend this book!

Great Helper

I bought this to help some of my students who are a little behind in their learning. Students are being required to think more critically and solve problems. It's hard to do that when you don't fully understand text and can't pick up on context clues. This book gives many short paragraphs for students to read with highlighted words in the story. Then there are a few questions to help students figure out higher level vocabulary within the text. Great to help build vocabulary and enhance comprehension.

A great way for kids to boost their vocabulary

I chanced upon these Scholastic series of book focusing on core reading skills and have found them to be very useful. My seven-year-old daughter actually enjoys working on the exercises because the passages are short and interesting! The questions are well-designed and help young children, Grades 2-3 build skills in the area of vocabulary, specifically vocabulary in context.

Each page contains two short passages and each passage has a question about a highlighted word. The student needs to identify which meaning is closest to the highlighted word in the passage. This is a great way to get children to improve their vocabulary. The passages here are both fiction and non-fiction and are generally interesting. I recommend all the books in this Reading Passages That Build Comprehension series. There is also an answer key at the end of the book. This can be used for independent as well as guided practice.

Denim and Pilkey parody a parody in this supremely silly effort. The jacket art, placing the title characters in the room featured in Goodnight Moon , loudly proclaims the author and artist's dependence on allusions; their book, dedicated to James Marshall, is clearly indebted to Marshall and Henry Allard's Stupids books, with a dose of Marshall's version of Goldilocks thrown in for good measure. Here, three roly-poly, bucktoothed pink bunnies grin goofily as they leave their porridge on the table and head to town. Poppa Bunny wears polka-dotted Y-front briefs and scratches his head in befuddlement, Baby Bunny picks his nose and puts ketchup on his watermelon, and Momma Bunny wears obnoxious harlequin glasses and a baseball cap marked "Duh." Meanwhile, back at their "log cabin made out of bricks," Little Red Goldilocks (who has skin "as white as snow") makes herself comfortable. Denim's deadpan narration complements the all-out corniness of Pilkey's colorful illustrations, but it doesn't capture the amiability of the Stupids (or, for that matter, of Pilkey's beatifically bemused Dragon). Grade 2-5-A cross between Harry Allard's "The Stupids" (Houghton) and a fractured fairy tale. A moronic rabbit family lives in a "log cabin made out of bricks," bowls a game of baseball at the public library, and has lunch in a car wash. While they are out, their home is invaded by Little Red Goldilocks. Poppa Bunny wears red polka-dotted jockey shorts and Momma wears a short skirt and bra. Poppa, Momma, and Baby Bunny all have very prominent overbites. Many of the jokes require a degree of sophistication beyond that of average primary graders: the Bunnies drive a Yugo, Baby Bunny uses a pimple cream called Zit-B-Gone, and Momma sings "Feelings" and wears butterfly wing glasses. Book titles at the library include The Condo that Jack Subleased, Pair 'O Dice Lost, The Second to the Last of the Mohicans, and Moby Richard. Some of the slapstick humor will appeal to youngsters, e.g., pouring porridge down pants and on heads, ice skating on the bottom of an unfrozen lake, letting Baby Bunny drive the car, and flushing Little Red Goldilocks down the toilet. The most appreciative audience for this title, however, will be older students who grew up with the Stupids and now have the experience to appreciate the more subtle visual humor.

The book jacket will attract any smart aleck who knows the original and enjoys seeing its cozy elements replaced with good-natured zaniness: underpants on the drying rack, a goldfish bowl in the fireplace, lava lamps on the mantle, a bowl of Spam on the table, and dumb bunnies grinning at their audience. Inside, the humor is equally visual, often clever, sometimes just dumb, and scattershot in terms of age level. Fans of the Stupids and fractured fairy tales will like the dumb bunnies, too, but somewhere between the time Baby Bunny cries "Somebody's been using my pimple cream" and when he flushes Little Red Goldilocks down the toilet, things have pretty well gotten out of hand, never to return. when i was student teaching in an inner-city school i read this classic to my kindergarten class and it was stolen before first recess. no one would fess up and at first i grieved for the loss of my favorite book, but i quickly realized that it had made some kid want to read badly enough to swipe it, which is a testament to it's utter fantabulosity. every time i read any of the "dumb bunnies" books i laugh out loud, wherever i am. just looking at those bunnies in their underwear makes me laugh! and the toilet jokes are to die for. this is my favorite series for reluctant readers of any age.

Gr 1-6–It's Halloween, and the three siblings introduced in Muth's Zen Shorts (2005) and Zen Ties (2008, Scholastic) are working on their costumes when Stillwater appears at their door. The panda invites Addy, Michael, and Karl to meet him after trick-or-treating to hear a ghost story. The walk through the forest is filled with mystery. Stillwater himself–who said he would be a ghost this Halloween–is at times almost transparent, and his round, white bamboo lantern mimics the full moon. Inside his house is another panda who looks exactly like Stillwater. His story, which is told in words and brush-and-ink drawings, is based on an old Zen koan, or puzzle, about a young woman who is with her husband in a faraway land and yet very ill and at home with her parents. It invites listeners to consider duality, or perception vs. reality, and is at the same time a wonderfully haunting tale that's perfect for Halloween. When the story ends and the illustrations return to the earlier complex, evocative watercolors, it isn't clear whether Stillwater and the storyteller are two entities or one. The children and readers are left to consider this and other mysteries as both tales come to a close. Muth's artistic gifts are so breathtaking that they will draw in even those whose attention spans are not at first up to the demands of the text. More Brilliance From Jon Muth, This Time Halloween-Themed

I'm a fan of Jon Muth's books, and this one didn't disappoint. Stillwater, the beloved giant haiku-speaking panda also featured in Zen Shorts and Zen Ties, makes his reappearance here, this time accompanying Michael, Karl and Addy (the three children also featured in the prior books) on their Halloween trick-or-treating. The pictures are breathtaking as always, with the Halloween theme providing extra fun - one two-page spread features a beautiful full moon and dozens of children in a riot of different costumes. My almost-six year old couldn't stop looking at that page.

The book features a story within a story, as Stillwater tells the children a ghost story set in ancient Japan. The theme is nothing less than 'what is real?', the heart of Zen - and Halloween, of course - but young children will simply be caught in the fantasy and beauty of it all. The zen of Muth's books is never pedantic or preachy - it's embedded in every word and picture. The Japanese ghost story Stillwater tells is based on a koan from The Gateless Gate: The Classic Book of Zen Koans, but don't let that intimidate you. In Muth's deft hands it's a riveting tale, and you don't need to have any interest in Buddhism or Zen to enjoy it (although if you do, you'll be over the moon.)

So this is a lovely book for any child, and a particularly wonderful Halloween gift.

**EDIT**: I came back to add this, after seeing some of the comments about the story-within-the-story being too sophisticated for young children. Although every parent has to make these kinds of decisions for themselves, I wanted to say that I don't think it is anymore difficult for children to process than fire-breathing dragons or lost princesses. It reads like a fable. Parents will need to explain a bit, but I like books that trigger discussion and questions. And of course young children won't get the 'what is real?' sub-text, but a little confusion is not always a bad thing (and is very Zen!)

Different than the other ones

Because we love Zen Ties & Zen Shorts so much, I bought this book even though I knew nothing about the story within. Well, the story totally threw me off, I found it very different than the others in this series. Beautiful pictures, I guess a well written story (I needed to read the Koan explanation @ the end of the book to "get" why Muth thought this was a good story for kids). I think it works well as a ghost story, but my kids (4& 6) didn't get the deeper meaning aspect on the first reading. They were so confused by the details of the story they were hung up on that (I'd have to give away the story to explain further).

I like these books because of the spiritual message they impart to kids, but I don't think my kids are going to "get" that so much from this one. I had to go off book and explain it to them, and they still didn't relate it back to the story (unlike the other books in this series). Also, in the story a boy and a girl elope b/c the father wants the girl to marry someone else. I think that's too heavy for my kids at this age. They can handle it but why would I purposely expose them to eloping at this age ... I read it to them and modified that part of the story.

I am giving it four stars because it is beautiful in look and intent, but I think it's not quite the fun and spiritual light read that my kids got out of the other two books. The stories in the other books had an immediate beautiful message for my kids, and yet still were stories that could teach further with further readings. Fyi, I have studied some buddhism and have exposed my kids to it a lot and we love Stillwater the Panda!

We are enormous Muth fans but this is not his best

My 5.5 year old son and I are huge fans of Stillwater, but this book was a bit of a disappointment. First, as others have noted, the central Zen story is a bit too sophisticated for the age group reading this story -- so it drags the book down. As a result, there is no central thought for children to really grab onto and ponder. Zen Ties provided this central Zen thought beautifully through the story of Koo, Stillwater's nephew -- and the three Zen stories in Zen Shorts were appropriate for different age levels (ranging from the uncle giving away his robe to the priest carrying the princess over the puddle). Indeed, in those books, the three kids in the story (Addy, Michael & Karl) themselves glean meaning from Stillwater's stories and actions -- here, even the kids themselves seem not to understand the point of Stillwater's story. Second, the story of the children and Stillwater -- and their dialogue -- is unusually stilted and meaningless. The teaching, encouraging Stillwater of the first two books is not really here -- the conversations seem literally to focus on Halloween candy. However, the artwork in this story is completely spectacular -- possibly even more so than Zen Shorts and Zen Ties -- and Muth's weakest work is still better than 90% of the banal drivel that passes for children's literature.
