Absolutely amazing
By Melissa
My students absolutely LOVED these fractured folk tales. Justin McCory Martin did a super job of choosing some commonly known tales, and some not so common ones. My students enjoyed not only "performing" their readers' theater, but hearing the original folk tale that each of the fractured ones were based on. Because of the nature of readers' theater, all students got enough practice with their selections to be fluent and understanding readers and had lots of fun in the process.

Good book for kids plays
By MN Gal
I am going to use this on short weeks at school we are going to preform for our buddy classroom. But note the grade level on this is 2-4th grade. It may be a little to easy for higher grades.

Great Fun for Kids
By K. Cranick
Ordered these books for my third graders and they absolutely love them! We do theater week each six weeks and they love being able to create their own costumes and learn their lines, and these plays are funny and short enough for the kids to learn quickly in groups and perform. Great way to enhance their fluency and social skills!

Light hearted and fun
By Jennifer Mo
The once popular type of princess-- the sort with guileless blue eyes and more beauty than brains-- has gone quite out of fashion. Princesses in more recent books are, more often than not, antidotes to the earlier stereotype, to the point where the plain, smart, and plucky princess has become a new stereotype. I hesitated at picking up Margaret Gray's version of the unusual princess because I had already made my acquaintance with Gail Carson Levin's Ella, and Patricia Wrede's Cimorene, and Vivian Vande Velde's Princess Jennifer, and half a dozen other such atypical princesses.
But The Ugly Princess and the Wise Fool is filled with such good humor and wit that I was caught from the first sentence and didn't put the book-- chest protector, rather-- down until I had finished it. The familiar elements of fairy tales are all there. But Princess Rose has a snub nose and buck teeth and isn't by any stretch of the imagination beautiful. The court jester, Jasper, is a former wise man on the run after the king outlawed wisdom in the kingdom of Couscous. The fairy godmother is answerable to the Godmother Board of Trustees. And the glass slippers, as might be expected, are your podiatrist's worst nightmare...
The fantasy world Margaret Gray creates is delightfully tongue in cheek. There are kingdoms called Couscous and princesses named Asphalt and Concrete-- after all, there's no point in giving the older princesses decent names if only the youngest one is going to succeed. You can obtain degrees in wisdom from the Wise Man's Academy after learning to instantly assume the Air of Wisdom (one hand stroking beard, one eye wide open, the other tightly shut, and one leg bent) upon the sound of a whistle. And if you happen to be in a hurry, you have the option of going on an Express Quest (offered only in extreme circumstances), as opposed to a regular Quest.
Margaret Gray's writing is sprightly and energetic and often laugh out loud funny, and the wacky illustrations by Randy Cecil add to the fun. It's like M. M. Kaye's The Ordinary Princess meets Vivian Vande Velde's witty and rather modern treatments of Rumpelstiltskin, but without the slightly sugary quality of the first or the sharp sarcasm of the latter. Fairy tale fans who loved Kindl's Goose Chase and Ferris's Once Upon a Marigold should find The Ugly Princess and the Wise Fool to be similarly enjoyable. It isn't profound or groundbreaking, but it is a thoroughly entertaining concoction of wisdom and nonsense in exactly the right proportions.

A cute and darlingly mixed-up fairy tale
By Heidi Anne Heiner
I put off reading this book for a few days in order to read other titles that appeared more appealing. I was wrong. Within the first few pages, I found myself laughing and hating to put the book down to finish my work. I couldn't wait to have the chance to sit down and finish it. Yes, it is a twisted fairy tale with the cliche of an ugly princess, but there the comparisons end. Gray has managed to write her material fresh, silly, and downright funny. Rose is a third princess with buck teeth and awful hair. Her older sisters, Concrete and Asphalt, have to wait for hours each day while their hair is groomed and maintained to perfection. They don't mind since their younger sister's ugliness has not required them to fly off and become wicked, bitter ugly witches! Rose's adventures and lessons learned about wishes and beauty are obvious, but still entertaining, so readers won't mind getting a message with their fun. This would be a cute book for a classroom read aloud or for any girl looking for a new fairy tale chapter book.
Also recommended are: The Ordinary Princess by M. M. Kaye and the fairy tale books of Gail Carson Levine

Great book for all ages
By shiara the witch
I love all original fairy tales, and this one is great! It is cute, with a spunky heroine, who is not perfect in either body or personality, but is for the most part a good person. It also has some traditional fairy tale themes such as a fairy godmother and a handsome prince. All in all this is a good book to read for any girl who thinks she sould be more beautiful.
The third princess is always the most beautiful, with two lovely, but mean sisters, and must over come many obsiticals to marry prince charming and find true love. But what happens when the third princess is not beautiful, or even atractive. Princess Rose faces this delema, although she didn't even think of it as so before the amazing Prince Parseley comes looking for a beautiful wife. With out thinking of the consecuances Rose wishes to be the most beautiful princess ever, and she gets her wish. Is this Rose's destiny to marry prince Parseley, or to stay the nice, but plain Rose.

The stories of America's most magnificent canals, highways, dams, bridges, and skyscrapers.

Americans didn't let mountains stand in the way of trade with the American West--they tunneled right through them to make the Cascade Tunnel and Hoosac Tunnel. When water and power were needed, they built huge dams, such as the Fort Peck Dam and the Hoover Dam. Faced with water to cross, they built beautiful bridges, such as the Brooklyn Bridge and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. And the American character is best reflected by the building it invented, the skyscraper. BUILT TO LAST profiles 17 architectural and engineering marvels, from the Erie Canal to Boston's Big Dig.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 5-10–Sullivan pays tribute to several of the architectural masterpieces that have enabled Americans to travel better, faster, and farther. Concentrating on bridges, tunnels, dams, and skyscrapers, he begins his overview in the 18th century with the Erie Canal and ends with construction of City Tunnel No. 3 in New York, started in 1970 and expected to be finished in 2020. Projects are grouped by period and each section is introduced with a discussion of the culture of the time and issues of interest. The author pays homage to the people who designed, built, and completed each engineering marvel, including the Transcontinental Railroad, Hoover Dam, Golden Gate Bridge, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Arch, Cascade Tunnel, and the Sears Tower. Photographs, artist renderings, and a few highlighted facts (location, cost, size, etc.) accompany each discussion. Illustrated spreads requiring readers to hold the book vertically emphasize the size of these wonders. Students will enjoy both the pictures and Sullivans anecdotal accounts. The authors excitement about these building projects and creative design is sure to be contagious. A masterful job.–Delia Carruthers, Sunset Ridge Middle School, West Jordan, UT

From Booklist
Gr. 5-8. "Engineers and architects are problem solvers," writes Sullivan in the introduction to this welcome survey of American building--from the Erie Canal to Boston's current "Big Dig." Chronological chapters describe the historical forces that helped drive each project as well as the specific technological feats linked to each pioneering structure. Numerous fact boxes offer more contextual details on subjects such as the impact of electric elevators and the working conditions (including salary and even a typical lunchtime meal) for builders of skyscrapers, dams, tunnels, and bridges through the decades. The wide selection of captivating illustrations includes archival photos and engravings, architectural drawings, and color photos, many of which show the structure printed horizontally across a double-page spread, allowing, with a tilt of the book, a full, majestic view of each project. A list of further readings closes. Sullivan's skillful integration of social and economic history distinguishes this clear, well-designed title, which, like David Macaulay's Building Big (2000), will encourage children to marvel at the skill, labor, and wild inspiration required to lift large-scale projects from blueprints into the three-dimensional world. A pick for grades 5-6, telling the story of the design & construction of seventeen selected architectural & engineering marvels
By Midwest Book Review
George Sullivan's Built To Last: Building America's Amazing Bridges, Dams, Tunnels And Skyscrapers is a pick for grades 5-6, telling the story of the design and construction of seventeen selected architectural and engineering marvels. Lovely photos include six vertical, double-page spreads with images of the Sears Tower, Golden Gate Bridge, and more, while descriptions provide details on construction challenges and achievements. Built To Last may not fit into curriculums for assignments, but it surely will attract leisure readers.

Great photos and details on 17 major American construction projects.
By Amelia
"Built to Last" is broken up into five sections: The Early Republic (1790-1850); Invention and Discovery (1850-1910); Hard Times (1920-1940); A Golden Age (1950-1965); and Megaprojects (1990-present). Each section includes 2 to 5 construction projects with each project's chapter including details on location, cost, length/height and dates of construction, as well as a number of photographs. There are also a number of full two-page spread photos of the project being discussed. Descriptions are detailed and thorough. I would have liked to see a few more maps included, but that's more a personal preference than a real drawback.

My early elementary school aged son checked this book out from the library and has had me read it to him. We're covering a construction project a night. He likes these sort of books and is enjoying it a lot, even the chapters on projects we've already read books about, like the Brooklyn Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge.

My only real problem with this book comes from the section description pages that talk about the era the section covers. Both the Hard Times section and the Golden Age section include a few sentences that reflect the author's concept of the proper role of government. In a book so laden with indisputable facts I found it jarring to come across these pieces of information that are more like subjective interpretations and even value judgments. I feel they are not necessary, and they in fact detract from the quality of the book. There are only a few, but it downgraded the book, in my opinion, from 5 stars to 4 stars.

A construction book for bigger kids
By M. Heiss
Excellent photographs accompany this book for bigger kids, showing some of the most impressive construction projects of the past century. Seriously excellent photography, some photos during construction, some 2-page spreads, some VERTICAL two-page spreads. Nice!

Accepts giant boondoggle government construction projects as an unalloyed good -- that's my gripe with this book. America has way too much of that already. For example, holding up Boston's Big Dig as any sort of human accomplishment, after it came in quintuple the budget and full of corruption -- that's a project that ought not to be emulated or admired.

Still... really interesting projects. And this may serve as a gateway to explain to your kids the way giant public works projects always devolve into massive government-sponsored corruption and vote-buying schemes -- cheers!

I Love You, Stinky Face, by Lisa Mccourt

A vividly illustrated bedtime story that shows how the unconditional love of a mother can be tested through the relentless questions of her little boy.

"But Mama, but Mama, what if I were a super smelly skunk, and I smelled so bad that my name was Stinky Face?"

Mothers love their children and this unconditional love is truly tested in I Love You, Stinky Face. Lisa McCourt and Cyd Moore beautifully weave a reassuring tale of the love and affection of a parent. The imaginative son turns himself into a meat-eating dinosaur, a swamp creature and much, much more before being satisfied with the fact that no matter how stinky he is or how slimy of a creature he could possibly be, he is loved and nothing will change that.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1. A child tucked into bed delays going to sleep, needing reassurance of her mother's love. The youngster asks, "Would you still love me....if I were a big scary ape?" or "a super smelly skunk" or "a terrible meat-eating dinosaur," and the list continues. No matter what horrible creature is imagined, Mama says she will always love and care for her child. Warm pastel drawings sweetly illustrate the story; the imaginary creatures are appealing rather than frightening. Reminiscent of Margaret Wise Brown's The Runaway Bunny (HarperCollins, 1942) and Kady Denton's Would They Love a Lion? (Kingfisher, 1995), this is a good choice for storytime or one-on-one sharing.?Elizabeth Trotter, Scott County Public Library, Georgetown, KY

My son's favorite book!
By K. Bennett
Just as Guess How Much I Love You is good for a tear or two, this book is guaranteed to bring out the giggles, at least as far as my kids are concerned. Its message, however, is very serious: parental love is unconditional. The story takes place as a mother is tucking her son into bed. "I love you, my wonderful child," she says. But her son asks, "[W]hat if I were a big, scary ape?. . .what if I were a super smelly skunk?. . .what if I were an alligator with big, sharp teeth that could bite your head off. . .?" Would she love him even then? Not only would she still love him, she assures him, but she would treasure the things that make him unique. If he were an ape, she'd comb his hair and make him a banana birthday cake. If he were a skunk, she would cuddle him and whisper, "I love you, Stinky Face." If he were a meat-eating dinosaur whose claws ripped the sheets every night, she'd feed him lots of meat and mend his sheets every day.
Cyd Moore's illustrations are witty and wonderful! Each picture of the boy with his mother gives a clue to what he's going to become next. On one page he's playing on his bed with his covers draped around his shoulders; on the next page he's "a swamp creature with slimy, smelly seaweed hanging from [his] body." On one page he's letting fireflies loose from a jar; on the next page he's a Martian who eats bugs instead of peanut butter. No matter what type of creature he changes into, the boy still wears his orange, green and yellow striped pajamas. Because Ms. Moore uses the colors of the sky just as sunset is turning to dusk -- pink, purple, blue, green -- this book is a perfect bedtime tale.

sweet book but might frighten toddlers
By Haggsi
I bought "I love you stinky face" for my toddler (almost 3 yrs old). I am expecting a baby in a few weeks and I don't want my toddler to feel like I don't love her anymore since I won't have as much time for her soon. Its a sweet bedtime story and a good read (no too long) but I find some of the creatures mentioned and illustrated in the book might frighten toddlers. There is a green alien, cyclops, swap monster and other creatures that could easily frighten little kids. My daughter doesn't seem frightened but you never know. I definitely recommend to read through the book and then explain what these creatures are (I am certain that most toddlers don't know what a cyclops is). After reading the book we went back page by page and I explained the different animals/creatures to her. Point of the story is that mom loves you no matter what - and thats most important.

One of the best children's books I've read!!!
By Jasmine
This was my favorite book to read to both of my children when they were small. I absolutely love the message throughout the book - basically, the mother assures her child that she will love him no matter what he becomes. It's a beautiful, and funny, book. I buy it for everyone I know who has a baby, and they all say they love it, too. Great gift for new families!

"His closest companion was an iron rod."
By K. L Sadler
Well, that will teach me not to read the entire review of a book before sending for it! Not that I'm complaining about the book...I thought it was for adults. It's not really, though I can see using it for reading and science literacy for deaf adults.
This is a great book. The explanations concerning what happened to Mr. Gage, and the science behind his medical recovery and subsequent personality problems is fairly well covered. There is a great glossary in the back with more information concerning terminology used in 'brain science' such as abscess and neurotransmitters that can be used as a jumping point for students to do their own research into areas that interest them, whether on the Internet or in libraries.
I kind of skimmed through the text. Most of it was stuff I've had over exposure to. The text is well written, just more simple than I am used to reading. Fleischman writes very tongue-in-cheek (come to think of it, Gage couldn't do that for a while on one side!). I appreciate Fleischman's humor, and I am sure most teachers and students will find it refreshing from boring textbooks written by professors or publishing houses. The science is correct in this book, which I am finding is often NOT the case in textbooks...so maybe teachers should stop using textbooks and use books such as this, journals and the Internet!
My favorite part of this book, of course, are the pictures, the MRI scans, the reconstitution of his brain within his skull using modern techniques. Very fun to see all this together. Gage is learned about in every neuroscience class I had from an undergrad to graduate level. We talk about the fact that he survived this stunning blow, about his personality changes in neuropsychiatric classes, about possible relations between other disorders such as autism and what happened in lobotomies (ugh!...). Everyone in Neuroscience knows about Gage. He is fascinating to the point of remembering his name when we can't remember names of past acquaintances.
Fun book, good science, great pictures, a good introduction for kids to neuroscience.

It puts the "me" in "gruesome"
By E. R. Bird
As a children's librarian, I do a lot of booktalks in area schools. In a typical booktalk I will stand up with a pile of books at my side and try by any means necessary to get kids interested in reading. Such an effort can cause a librarian a fair amount of strain and sometimes we'll stoop mighty low to get children hooked. Enter "Phineas Gage". By and large, non-fiction titles are the hardest ones to sell to kids. You tell a ten-year-old that you have a story about a boy who finds a mysterious dragon's egg and you'll probably have a convert before you've uttered so much as ten sentences. But if you hold in your hot little hand an item that contains actual FACTS.... usually you're up a crik. Not in the case of Phineas. This book is so chock full of blood, splattered brains, busted skulls, and other goopy beginnings that your intended audience, whatever the age, will be hanging on your every word. For the parent that wants their child to someday become a high priced neurologist, I highly suggest that you give them a little taste of "Phineas Gage" for a starter.

Now imagine that you are Mr. Gage himself. The year is 1848 and you're just an average railroad construction foreman. Your job consists of blasting rock out of the way of the construction, allowing further tracks to be laid. You're good at your job, and you've a custom-made tamping iron (thirteen-pound rod with a pointed end) to help you out. Then, on September 13, 1848, you mess up. It could happen to anyone. One moment you're putting the highly combustible blasting powder down a hole. The next minute you've turned your head in distraction and you've dropped your tamping iron down that selfsame hole. The iron hits a piece of granite, produces a spark, and suddenly the iron has ripped through your left cheek, gone behind your left eyeball, and come up through the top of your head. There's blood everywhere, brains on the iron, and a very surprised Phineas Gage sitting in the midst of it all. You'd think a blast like that would kill a man, right? Wrong. Phineas not only is fine, he making entries into his time book as he goes to town for the doctor. When the doctor isn't around, he then sits on the front steps of a nearby hotel and has a lengthy conversation with his landlord. All the while there's blood everywhere and a clear view into Phineas's head to his brains. And is Phineas completely unchanged by the experience? Not quite. Though he lives for quite some time after the accident, Phineas suddenly is bereft of all his social skills. Why is this? What does it mean about the brain itself? And why did Phineas live?

Like I said, there's gore galore in this puppy. But better yet, there's a lot of sound scientific information for questioning young minds. For those kids more interested in the accident itself, Phineas's skull is displayed throughout the book. You can clearly make out where the hole once was, as well as how it healed over time. Digitally rendered graphs show exactly how the tamping iron entered Mr. Gage's head and how it excited. Historical information about the state of brain science in the late 1800's is coupled with what we know (and still do not know) now. The book is filled with interesting photographs, graphs, and illustrations. For further information there's a great list of resources, as well as a fabulous glossary, and a complete index.

Now the author of this book is not a children's non-fiction author. In fact, he's a science writer for the American Society for Cell Biology at the Harvard Medical School. So how well does he write for young `uns? The answer is pretty darn well. Overall, Fleischman's text is tight and interesting. He never launches into a speculation without making it very clear what the facts behind each and every matter are. Unfortunately, the book does have an occasional dull moment. Not being particularly thrilled with neuroscience myself, I found my eyes slipping over a page or two of brain facts that I didn't feel the need to backtrack and read. Still, for the most part the book is a fascinating journey into a weird moment in history.

So if your kid has been told in school that they MUST read and write about a non--fiction title of some sort, I highly recommend dear old "Phineas Gage" to you. Never has any moment so gross rendered so great a discovery.

a great non-fiction book for everyone!
By CCags829
I just finished reading this book with a 12-year old middle schooler. Both of us loved every page of this book and the incredible story of Phineas Gage.

As a undergrad student majoring in psychology, I also found this book to be quite fascinating, as it goes into more depth over the life of this extraordinary man who survived such a freak accident.

The book is perfect for young adults as it is a work of non-fiction of the highest quality. It seems like there aren't enough non-fiction books out there today that are geared towards young readers. It is a great introduction to major topics in biology including bacteria, organization of cells, as well as an in-depth discussion of the brain. Definitely a great book for psychology and biology students alike!

Amazon.com Review
British boy with catchy name and unusual powers, check. Wild hair, check. Students at boarding school, check. Owls and funny street names, check. Mysterious shape-shifting enemies out to get the affable boy protagonist, check. Jenny Nimmo's "Children of the Red King" series (starring Charlie Bone) has so many of the same trappings as the Harry Potter series that, unfortunately, comparison is unavoidable. Rowling's books clearly trump these simpler fantasies for younger readers--but the Charlie Bone books are finding their audience in those who need a boy-wizard fix and need it now.

Charlie Bone and the Invisible Boy, the third book in the author's planned quintet, begins when the magically "endowed" Charlie and his friend Emma discover a mostly invisible, strawberry jam-loving boy named Ollie Sparks imprisoned in the attic of the Hogwartsian Bloor's Academy. Ollie's plight is part of a seemingly amorphous Larger Evil Plot involving school authorities, a blue boa, and Charlie's three horrible great aunts. Charlie Bone and his friends are eager to fight wrongdoing with their combination of special powers, but obstacles in all shapes and sizes abound. Can the children rescue Ollie, Charlie's uncle, Ollie's older brother, and the other hapless victims...or are the enemies too plentiful and powerful? Despite the likeable Charlie and a plethora of magical happenings (raining frogs, sorcerers who escape paintings, etc.), reading this 408-page fantasy feels like a bit like running a marathon where the finish line feels farther away with every step. Thankfully, the ending is a happy one. (Ages 10 and older) --Karin Snelson

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7–In this third installment in the series, another semester at Bloor Academy is about to begin, and, as usual, chaos ensues. At home, Charlie's Uncle Paton disappears, then returns ill and powerless. Charlie's friend Benjamin heads off to Hong Kong, and his grandmother Maisie leaves to take care of her sick sister. At the same time, a new and sinister student named Belle arrives and quickly establishes herself as a force to be reckoned with. A new art teacher has joined the staff to find his younger brother, Ollie Sparks, turned invisible by a blue boa (snake, though there are feathers involved) controlled by the evil Ezekiel Bloor. Charlie and his friends try to come up with ways to help Ollie and Billy Raven, the poor orphan being manipulated and tormented by the Bloor clan. One of the strengths of this story (and the whole series) is the way both regular people and those who are magically endowed work toward common goals. A weakness is the lack of progress toward identifying and rescuing Charlie's father, who is barely mentioned in this outing. Still, it's a wild roller-coaster ride of a story, and will more than satisfy not only fans of this series, but those who are exhibiting symptoms of Harry Potter withdrawal.–Mara Alpert, Los Angeles Public Library

From Booklist
Gr. 5-7. The series continues with Charlie Bone and his friends at Bloor Academy, where, this time, they must save Ollie Sparks, who has become invisible following an encounter with a magical blue boa constrictor. Charlie has other problems, too: his nasty aunts are definitely up to something mean. When Charlie's uncle Paton disappears and a new girl with eyes that constantly change color shows up at his house, the adventure is on! Characters are introduced quickly at the beginning, but it isn't necessary to have read the first two books to enjoy this one. Readers will quickly sort out the personalities and settle into the story of magically talented friends--from Billy who speaks to animals to Tancred who can call down the weather--coming together to solve a mystery. The novel's length may be initially daunting for some young readers, but the type is large and generously spaced. Cindy Welch

Charlie Bone and the Invisible Boy
By K. Cramblit
When I first read Midnight for Charlie Bone I was on a trip and bought it as a second hand book on tape. I bought it because I expected it to be like HP.

Next I read the Time Twister, and then the Invisible boy. One of the things I like most about them is that each book is one school term so there is more story per school year. Another cool thing about them is that the kids have individual powers unlike HP where thay all can do everything.

One very interesting thing I like about this book series is that the people know about the endowed kids. Over all, these are very good books. So are HP and the Bartimaeus Trilogy. To me all three are the greatest series ever made. Student age 15

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8–With more than capable narration by actor Paul Boehmer, Suzanne Collinss second novel in the Underland Chronicles series (Scholastic, 2004) practically vibrates with excitement and adventure. It takes a bit of time to catch up on characters and events from the first book, but enough hints are dropped along the way to make this accessible to new listeners. Gregor is an Overlander, an 11-year-old who lives in New York City. Boots, his toddler sister, disappears into the Underland, a vast world beneath the city thats populated by enormous bats, cockroaches, and rats, while sledding in Central Park. Gregor knows he must return to the strange underground kingdom of Regalia to rescue her. Boehmer gives each character a distinctive voice, and he has the tone and timing of toddler Boots down perfectly. His voice reflects the change in Gregor as he matures under the weight of his responsibilities. A good choice for fantasy fans in school and public libraries.–Charli Osborne, Oxford Public Library, MI

From Booklist
Gr. 4-8. In this exciting, fast-paced sequel to Gregor the Overlander [BKL O 15 03], 11-year-old Gregor and his little sister, Boots, return to the Underland to battle the evil giant rats, which have conspired to kill Boots in order to destroy Gregor, their primary obstacle to conquering all the Underland. To save his sister, Gregor sails across a subterranean sea with his bat and cockroach allies to find and kill the prophesied rat leader of the Underland war. Most of the action takes place on the water, including a memorable battle with a sea serpent, and there are plenty of suspenseful moments and exciting developments. Gregor, of course, is courageous, selfless, and ultimately triumphant. Readers unfamiliar with the first novel will be at a disadvantage; Collins assumes knowledge of the characters and developments from the first book. But fans will not be disappointed with this exciting, action-packed sequel, whose ending suggests more adventures to come. Ed Sullivan

Destined to become a classic
By A. Reid
I thought the same thing about the first one: this book deserves to be recognized as one of the finest books of children's fiction in recent years. I don't generally pick up books in hardback, but after reading Gregor the Overlander, the first in the series, I had to get this. Like its predecessor, it deals with a fantastic voyage in a mysterious land with very high stakes. Gregor's adventures may bring him face to face with giant talking cockroaches and rats, but they're very serious novels nevertheless. Gregor has to grapple not only with external dangers, but with internal as well--deciding what kind of person he desires to be. Moving adventures with a lot of heart, they're worthy additions to the bookshelf of any child--or adult.

Can't put it down...
By microjoe
A word of caution, you can't put this book down. It is so interesting and exciting, the world that is created underground and its characters just draws you in. This is the sequel to the outstnding book, "Gregor the Overlander", and once again Gregor and his baby sister travel to the Underland to help save Regalia. The evil giant rats are at it again, and have discivered a long lost secret weapon. Gregor learns of a strange new power that he has, useful and frightening at the same time. Suprising allies and bonds form together to protect the warrior on his journey to the labyrinth. The company travels over an underground sea this time before riding on the backs of giant bats, with giant fireflys to light their way. Along their way they face an attack by flesh-eating insects, a huge whirlpool, undersea dinosaurs, stinging giant phosphorescent squids, and other dangers at every turn. After Gregor has again risked his life and everything he owns for the people of the Underland, he is (SPOILER ALERT) .....accused of something shocking! A third book has just been released, "The Curse of the Warmbloods", I can't wait to read it.

Helpful Tool
By Sara Urben
This is a great resource for any classroom teacher. The assessments are user-friendly and help you to quickly pinpoint reading difficulties. Unlike many other assessments, there is a comprehension piece in addition to expression and automaticity. I photocopy kids' results to share with parents; and the assessments are simple enough that parents are able to understand the results and practice specific skills with their child at home.

Why four, not five stars: They're more like five or six minute assessments once you actually write down all your notes. I've used them for awhile, and even with practice am never done in three minutes. I also wish there were more passages for each grade level. Overall though, a great book and one of my more often-used teacher resources.

Don't Pass This Up

Its true; it really only takes 3-5 minutes to assess your students' reading level. It assesses the words correct per minute, the % of correct words, comprehension, fluency, pace, smoothness, and tone. Its great and highly recommended. I wish I had this years ago!

I found this book very useful to use in the classroom. I was able to conduct the assessments fairly quickly and provide both myself and the parents with an abbreviated list of areas in which the student needed to work. Really great for the classroom teacher!
