About the Author
Jude Watson is the author of two 39 Clues books, BEYOND THE GRAVE and IN TOO DEEP, and the bestselling Star Wars: Last of the Jedi and Jedi Quest series. Great for kids and adults

I enjoyed this book a lot, and I'm well over the suggested age range. I've read many of Watson's books to my 7-year-old son, who's under the suggested age range, and we've both gotten hooked on them. I like the character bits and dialogue; he likes the fight scenes!

This one is divided into 4 sections, each focusing on a different generation of Jedi. The first is about Dooku as a Padawan, the second is about Dooku as a Knight with Qui-Gon as his Padawan, the third covers Qui-Gon as master with Obi-Wan as his Padawan, and the fourth is set in the early stages of the Clone Wars with Obi-Wan and Anakin. Linking them all together is a character who appears in all four sections, a onetime friend of Dooku's named Lorian Nod who has several run-ins with the Jedi.

Watson is a master of characterization and what I enjoyed most about this book was getting to see what Dooku was like at age 13, what he was like later on as Qui-Gon's master, and some of the events that shaped his life. Even more fun was seeing a young Qui-Gon and the early manifestations of his reserve, his rebellious nature and his compassionate desire to help beings whom no one else will help. One gets a sense of how difficult it must have been for Qui-Gon to have been Dooku's apprentice, given Qui-Gon's strong living force connection and Dooku's almost total lack of empathy for other beings.

Part four was a mixed bag for me. I loved the scene where Obi-Wan was rude to Lorian Nod in the Jedi Council room. It's such unusual behavior for Obi-Wan, and yet it was completely in character. But the ending of the book kind of fizzled out for me; I was expecting a bigger payoff out of the redemption storyline and the ending felt rushed somehow.

But overall, this is a very fun and thought-provoking book. You have four generations of important Jedi from the movies, two of which will never stray from the Jedi path, and two of which will ultimately betray the Order and become Sith. If you are thoughtful about this sort of thing you can wonder, did events concerned with Lorian Nod cause Dooku to fall, or was he doomed to fall because he could never control his pride or even see it as a fault? And similarly, did Anakin fall because of the events in his life, or because Obi-Wan failed him, or because of inherent and unchangeable personality traits? The book doesn't answer these questions but it gives the reader plenty to think about.

Cheers for Legacy

When reading the SW books that Jude Watson writes I can't help but wonder why she isn't writing adult novels too. Her "children's" novel are often smarter, wittier, funnier, and alot better read then most of the other author's books in the EU. This is definitely the case with Legacy of The Jedi.
Legacy is separated in to four different section but weave into each other to create something magical. In the first part we learn of Dooku as a padawan and his friend Lorian. Next we get a look into Qui-Gon Jinn's apprenticeship with Dooku were they encounter Lorian once more. The third story centers around Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan and another mishap with Lorian. Finally we get a story about Obi-Wan and Anakin during the beginning of the Clone War that also involves Lorian, now an old man. While each story is separated they bounce off each other and blend into one big story.
In this book we get a glimpse at Dooku's beginning and a peak at his fall. The reader also get a look at the different relationship between Master and Padawan. From the distance with Dooku and Jinn, to the close bonds of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, to finally the widening gaps of Obi-Wan and Anakin. It's very interesting to see the different approaches the Master each take and how different each Padawan is from the other.I especially like the part centering around Qui-Gon when he was a Padawan. I wouldn't mind seeing a series revolving around his and Dooku's relationship in the future or perhaps a sequel type book to this where we once again get all four generations.
This book is a bit steep in price but reading wise it will entertain and make you wish it was a great deal longer.

Legacy of the Jedi- The best StarWars book ever made.

Even though this book, and many other books written by Jude Watson are "for ages 9-12", the depth of emotions and the touching stories portrayed in these books are superior. For ages 9-100, I say!
I am a 15 year old girl and I own all of the StarWars books, from The Rising Force (Jedi Apprentice #1) to the eighth book in the Jedi Quest series. I'm not a Sci-fi freak, but I love these books because they are so well written, and they teach important values, dealing with friendship, working through adversity, and even romance. These books are for everyone, boy or girl, man or woman.
Legacy of the Jedi was brilliant. It linked the different generations of Jedi (Yoda and Dooku, Dooku and Qui-Gon, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, and Obi-wan and Anakin)as if they were seperate little books in one. Jude Watson provided excellent coherence in the book by linking all of the relationships together with each master-padawan team battling a common enemy.
Each team has a weakness that they have to work through. Each team is different. It is amazing to see what Dooku was like as a boy, and what made him become Count Dooku. It was also good to see what Qui-Gon was like before he became the logical, perfect master.
This book is definatly recomended!! If you like this book, read Jedi Apprentice Special Edition 1&2- they're awesome!

A little Dissapointed

I got these file folder games so that my son could play independently while I was working with my other child. It turns out that all the games in this folder requires a min. of two players. Some of the games are fun for two, but not what I bought it for.

great pictures

Compared to most modern coloring books, this one is fabulous. The people look like who they are supposed to be. The paper is not good for markers or pencils, its definitely a crayon book. If you have a box of 120 crayons, you can really get creative with clothing and backgrounds (bluebell and tumbleweed are excellent for both). Lots of fun. Too bad the book is so small.

THERE ARE NO ACTIVITIES

This is just a coloring book. There are no activities. It is a slim coloring book but the pictures are excellent. I don't know why other reviewers wrote the pictures aren't detailed. They are very detailed. More detailed than most coloring books. Infact they are extremely artistic. The illustration of the snake is magnifiicent with it's very detailed markings.. Infact most of the pictures are alot like photographs as they are so detailed. My 6 year old grandson who knows every Harry Potter plot in detail was thrilled with this book. He described the role of every picture. As a grandmother who paid I would have liked to see a thicker book and was expecting some activities .I guess coloring is an activity but that's the only one. I would give it 5 stars just because my grandson was so thrilled with it. He had requested a coloring book with activities as his sister has and that is why I ordered this thus 4 stars.. The illustrations are for an older child and most older children have outgrown coloring but it definitely is a tribute to The Goblet of Fire and is a step above the rest.

Just what i wanted good paper for crayons compared to most modern coloring books, this one is fabulous. The people look like who they are supposed to be. Its definitely a crayon book.

Using first-person narration, Morpurgo draws readers into this young man's life, relating memories that are idyllic, sobering, and poignant. Tommo thinks upon the role he played in his father's accidental death, the adventures that he shared with Charlie, his relationship with his childhood friend Molly, and the experiences that he has had since entering the war. Finally, he describes how Charlie disobeyed a direct order to stay with him after he was wounded in action, fully aware of this decision's dire consequences. While this story is not based on any one individual, Morpurgo has personalized the British tactic of executing their own soldiers "for cowardice or desertion," memorializing these men without passing judgment. While readers see the events through Tommo's eyes, the author does not lose sight of the war's effects on the teen's friends and family. In this World War I story, the terse and beautiful narrative of a young English soldier is as compelling about the world left behind as about the horrific daily details of trench warfare: the mud, rats, gas attacks, slaughter. At 15, Thomas lied about his age in order to follow his beloved older brother, Charlie, to fight in France. Now, nearly two years later, as Thomas sits waiting in the dark for the horror he knows will come at dawn, he remembers it all. Growing up as a poor farm boy in a happy family, he was always close to Charlie and to their brain-injured brother, Joe, a character Morpurgo draws with rare tenderness and truth. Thomas and Charlie even loved the same girl; Charley married her, but she writes to them both. Thomas also remembers British brutality, from the landlord who threatened the family with eviction if Charlie didn't enlist to the cruel army sergeant who tried to break Charlie's spirit. Charlie may be too perfect, almost a Christ figure, but it's Thomas' viewpoint of the brother he loves. Suspense builds right to the end, which is shocking, honest, and unforgettable. Cooper's (Jewish Holidays All Year 'Round) thoughtful if belabored novel centers on 12-year-old Sam, with a Jewish father and Christian mother, who feels caught in the middle-especially this holiday season. Since the family dog has pulled down the Christmas tree (or "Hanukkah bush," as his father insists they call it), presents will be arranged around the menorah, for the first time putting more emphasis on Hanukkah than Christmas. On Christmas Eve, which coincides with the first day of Hanukkah, Sam witnesses the clashing traditions of his feuding Jewish and Christian grandmothers, and he decides to ask God something that has been plaguing him: "What I want to know is, why can't people practicing different religions get along?" This question assumes greater proportions when Sam's class begins studying the Holocaust ("How could You let this happen?" he asks God), and when the boy learns they had a relative who was a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp. In a rather strained subplot, Sam becomes smitten with Heather, a classmate he thinks is "cute," but whose mean-spiritedness (he finally realizes) is rooted in racism. Although the narrative becomes encumbered by some rather pointed exposition and repetitious discussion, Cooper introduces a likable young protagonist and raises some searching questions about tolerance, injustice, commitment to religion and communicating with God. As the hours (and chapters) tick from "five past ten" to "one minute to six" the following morning, Tommo recalls growing up in rural England at the turn of the twentieth century with his older brother, Charlie -- protector, best friend, and chief rival for the affection of their beguiling friend Molly. Exquisitely written vignettes explore bonds of brotherhood that cannot be broken by the physical and psychological horrors of the First World War. We eventually learn the reason for Tommo's sleepless night in a shattering, unexpected conclusion that is all the more effective for the stoicism with which the two brothers accept their separate but tragically entwined fates. A war story that has appeal for everyone

Tom Peaceful is whiling away a long night remembering what his life has been like up to now. He narrates the events that brought him to France during WWI with his brother Charlie, a rebellious and good hearted soul. Tom has to lie about his age to join the army, but feels he has to come in order to keep his brother "out of trouble." But trouble comes anyway. Tom's memories serve to make the Peacefuls and their close bond real, and help the reader to understand just how alien his war experience is to him.

Drawn to conclude: Great book

Written for the average 4th to 8th grader, this book offers 35 worksheets for students to learn test practice and quickly draw conclusions and inferences.

Page illustrations are minimal, appropriate for students up through high school. The last few worksheets are for testing a student's written skills of mastery of the topic at hand.

I would have liked to see a broader spectrum of reading levels addressed in the reading samples. Still worth the purchase.

Good book with a good introduction to inferences and drawing conclusions. However, I wish there were longer passages and more questions that were thought provoking.

Too basic

This book is very basic. The paragraphs are very short and only have 2 questions per story. This book could have been so much better. At first I thought it was a waste but then decided to incorporate a grammar lesson using the parapraphs, ex. Picking out verbs, nouns, etc. The reading level is geared more towards grades 4 & 5. They are too easy for any grades above that.

Ages 5^-8. Levitin's companion to Nine for California (1996) begins with the arrival of Amanda's family in California, where they join Pa, who has been mining for gold. Amanda is sorely disappointed when she discovers that the exciting boom town she was expecting consists of a stage stop, a pump house, and a few log cabins. Out of boredom (and a strong hankering for some pie), she begins to bake gooseberry pies in an old iron skillet. Soon she has a booming business on her hands, and eventually other businesses shoot up around it. Levitin was inspired to write this story by a single sentence in a book on California history: "A young lady who learned to improvise baked $11,000 worth of pies in a small iron skillet." True or not, this is an entertaining way to learn history. Smith adds to the fun with animated watercolor illustrations that are realistic yet have a distinctly cartoonish flair. Another plus: Amanda's gooseberry pie recipe is included. Lauren Peterson

The Wild West

This book is a very good example for little girls, because it shows a girl in the role of the main character who is very intelligent and thinks for herself. Amanda opens up shop selling pies to the miners in a California boom town and has quite a successfull business very quickly. Unlike many historical fiction stories where the main girl character is portrayed almost as a goody-two-shoes, Amanda has a style completely her own. She pulls the reader into the story and keeps them intereted the entire way through (no easy task when the target audience is in the preschool to second grade age group).
I should also mention that this is the second book in a series about Amanda and her family, and I feel that all of the books keep the same lively attitude as this one. Since this book is part of a series, it is possible that younger children could get confused if they are read out of order, so the people who read to them should keep that in mind. I think that these books, when used in a classroom setting, would be a very good segue into a unit on the Wild West or pioneers, especially since they portray girls and women as having minds of thier own and not just as extensions of their families.
This is especially important because many books about the Old West are focused more on boys, and these books have a girl for the main character. All in all, I would recommend this book without any hesitation and I consider it to be a very strong sequel to a powerful first book.

Won't you like to read a good book? In the fiction book "Boom Town," by Sonia Levitin, we learn how to help people sometimes.

This family goes to California on a stagecoach for twenty-one days. They went with their Pa and Ma, her baby sister Betsy, her brothers Billy Joe and Ted, and her, Amanda. They went to town because there could not be any children at the gold fields. Amanda was helping her family because her dad wasn't finding any gold. So she made a pie and gave it to her dad and then he sold a slice for 50 cents and he came home with his pockets full of change. Do you think that the town is going to be bigger?

My favorite part is when she baked the pie and it got burned so her brothers Billy Joe and Ted threw it high up in the sky and got a stick and hit it and piece of pie went everywhere.

I love this book because it is a cool and funny book.

I will recommend this book to others because it is very awesome and cool and funny.

Great book for girls and boys. Inspiring.

I actually just recommended this book to a moms group for thei own kids as its that good of a story. Inspiring and based on a true story of a young woman out west - it's a great read and great lessons. My kids love it - 5,3 and almost 2.

Good, But Not Enough Time To Use It All

Very useful forms for all kinds of writing situations, but with a lot of other curriculum provided that must be used, it takes more time than a teacher has with a class full of students.

A Time Saver for the Truly Busy Teacher

This helpful book contains four, five, and six-point rubrics/scoring sheets as well as numerical and practice-paper scoring sheets; checklists for students to help them remember to include the required elements of the various genres of writing; Paper Clippers to attach to students' graded writings showing them which elements they remembered/forgot to include; and forms to help students with the prewriting processes. The Writing Modes Quick Reference will be particularly helpful to beginning writers: It explains where the various genres of writing are used (IE: descriptive writing is used in travel brochures, menus, etc.). Publishing checklists, grader/rater checklists, form containing activities to encourage writing at home, and forms to communicate with parents have also been included in the mix. Of the 40 forms, I think the prewriting form for persuasive writing may prove to be the most useful along with the Paper Clippers and the Cut-Apart Scoring Sheets. The latter will be helpful when students team up with their peer proofreaders to assess each other's drafts. Although not a must-have, for the truly busy teacher, this book is a time saver.

Not for 8th graders

What I love about the 6 Traits is the accessibility across the grade levels. My initial experiences with 6 Traits was in the elementary school and I currently teach 8th grade. I have not found this resource to be helpful with older writers as most of the language is for young writers. With some of my students writing at the high school, even college level, it seems inappropriate. I use picture books for inspiration, but the checklists are too young. I will continue to collect 6 Traits materials as I found it is the best way to teach writing effectively.

This version does not include the gruesome illustrations of the original that still haunt me every once in a while. The book has been controversial because of the uncensored gore and terrifying images. This version is compromised fluffy camping-trip stories.

How Dare They...

How dare they censor the original?? The Stephen Gammel illustrations were incredible! The art was what made these books great! The writing is still good, but the new drawings are just nowhere near as good as the old ones! Skip this one and buy the old version(s)!!

Worthless Edition.

Without Stephen Gammell's artwork, these are pretty close to worthless.

Why would they EVER replace the original, incredible artwork? The reality is, Harper Collins, that Stephen Gammell's artwork MADE these classics.

The artwork now is unoriginal, not the least bit frightening (or artful), and does nothing to complement the stories.

Huge mistake. Someone should be fired. At least five people should be fired... and blacklisted.

This is an atrocity.

Prospective buyers: go buy the other versions! Oh, that's right, they're extremely expensive. I wonder why, Harper Collins? You fools.

And again for good measure: you fools.
