A great freezing story

The story begins when Eric, Julie, and Neal are in art class. New kinds of sparks come out of Eric's fingers. They are silver. They go to Droon and meet Keeah. Keeah tells them about an evil monster named Krog. The knights of the silver snow are with Keeah. One of the knights, Rolf, goes with the kids to the ice caves of Krog to stop Krog from destroying Droon cities. They meet the Ice Man. Neal says something mean and the Ice Man asks him three questions. He gets the first two right but the last one is math and he gets it wrong. This gets the Ice Man angry and Rolf and the Ice Man fall into a giant crack. The kids and Keeah go on without Rolf. The kids see an ice palace. They go in and they find magic food. The food makes them go to sleep. Before Eric goes to sleep he shoots the ceiling with the sparks from his fingers and snow falls in the palace. The snow wakes everybody up and they find the Ice Caves of Krog. Krog defeats everybody but Eric. Krog tells Eric he has two weaknesses. Read the book to find out what his weaknesses are and the true story of Krog! This was a great book.

One ancient snow beast you don't wanna mess with!

In the now #20th edition of the Droon series, Eric, Julie, Neil and Keeah find that there are now some new problems in Droon. A new snowman seems to have woken up for his deep slumber and is destroying villages all over Droon. It turns our this snowman, named Murn, is not at all a happy camper, and to stop him the kids have to journey up north to the Ice Caves of Krog. The kids have quite a few adventures including finding the tricky cave entrance, but nothing prepares them for the surprise of seeing Murn...
I have to admit I am a freshman in high school, but I have been reading Droon since I was ten. I know these types of books are way out of my reading level, but they are so magical that you really do feel sucked into Keeah's world. Little kids will love this book, and it is a great way to start your children on chapter books. A must-read!

Geronimo Learns to Overcome His Fears . . . Sometimes Too Well!

In Cat and Mouse in a Haunted House, we learned that Geronimo Stilton is afraid of cats . . . and things that go bump in the night. In Four Mice Deep in the Jungle, Geronimo's fear list has expanded to include leaving his home. How will The Rodent's Gazette operate without him?

Geronimo knows he has a problem and seeks help from Dr. Shrinkfur by telling his troubles while lying on a soft cat-fur couch. Dr. Shrinkfur sensibly observes that solving the fears is up to Geronimo.

After building his courage overnight, Geronimo goes downstairs and starts off for work. And everything bad that can happen occurs in the next 30 seconds!

That's it. Will Geronimo ever leave home again? Yes, if his sister Thea has anything to do with it. Thea, cousin Trap, and favorite nephew Benjamin team up to mouse-nap Geronimo for an undisclosed location. Along the way, Geronimo is able to take his minds off his troubles by eating lots of delicious cheesy chews and meeting the lovely Penelope Poisonfur, who just happens to have the next seat on a flight to someplace far away.

Flattered by Penelope's interest in him, Geronimo signs a paper she thrusts in front of him. Suddenly, he finds that he has to follow her orders at a survival school . . . or pay one million dollars. Since he doesn't have that kind of money, Geronimo is stuck.

Over seven days, he starts days off chillingly and faces many of his worst fears. Strangely, he feels better after each episode.

This book is in the best tradition of slapstick comedy and has a nice sex role reversal in making the female mice mentally and emotionally stronger than the male mice.

If your youngster has an occasional fear or two, it will be a relief so see that Geronimo is much worse . . . yet can be helped. It's a nice soft sell for learning to overcome your fears by facing up to them. Very nice!

Four Mice Deep Of The Jungle is about a mouse named Geronimo Stilton. He is afraid of everything. So then his sister named Thea told a girl mice who was Geronimo's #1 fan of Geronimo's books, to trick him into signing a contract saying that he would attend a camp of having to do everything that he was afraid of. So he signed the contract. He did not know what it was for. The girl had told him that it was just going to be his autograph that she wanted. So Geronimo loved he thought that she was so pretty he did not even read one word that was on the contract. So when he got on the airplane and headed to the jungle where the camp was going to be held at. He didn't know that he was going to go to camp. So when he got there he was so freaked out that he could not say anything except for yelling. Then Thea and the pretty lady put him in the room. So then the next day he had to do all the things that he was afraid of. Read the rest of the book to find out what happened next!!!

In what appears to be an effort to help children, particularly African Americans, assimilate the bitter American legacy of black slavery without damaging their self-esteem, Wright conjures up an almost preternaturally jolly picture of a slave wedding. Lettie's big sister is getting married, and Lettie bubbles with excitement. She describes the preparations, with the women using their limited spare time to make an elaborate quilt, pillows, sheets and a mattress for the new couple (feathers are reserved for the Master and his family's bedding, but "Tillie's pallet smells really sweet even if it is only stuffed with straw"), while the men carve furniture and cooking utensils. The wedding day is filled with laughter, singing, dancing and plenty of eating, and, of course, the couple jumps over a broom--which, in the absence of a minister or other official, constitutes the marriage ceremony. First-time children's illustrator Griffith mirrors the text's sunniness in luminescent watercolors that emphasize the light streaking through autumn foliage. A hushed serenity imbues the artwork, but can't quell the incongruities created by Wright's failure to establish the historical context. Ages 5-8.

Kindergarten-Grade 3-Wright captures a moment of joy and jubilation in the life of a slave community as they celebrate a marriage, traditionally known as "jumping the broom." The story is revealed through the eyes of eight-year-old Lettie, who is looking forward to her sister's wedding. The women sew and cook while the men with carpentry skills make things for the cabin-baskets, wooden spoons, tables, and three-legged stools. Smiles, good feelings, and food are abundant. This fictional depiction of slave life is quite different from what readers may be accustomed to reading. Major accounts accentuate the extreme harshness or project docile images of black workers. Wright, however, introduces children to the spirit of a people attempting to hold on to the richness of cultural values and a sense of tradition. The slaves in this community see themselves as human beings, in spite of the condition they find themselves in. There is no doubt that slavery as practiced in North America was a cruel and dehumanizing institution. However, this collaboration of text and soft delicate watercolors paints perhaps the peace found in a strong spiritual connection for Africans who knew who they really were.

The characters are beautifully defined in both words and pictures, and many kids will recognize Erin's pride in honoring her roots. In A Day with Daddy, a boy living with his mom talks about having fun with Dad on their weekly outing. Grimes draws on personal memories of growing up in a divorced family, and her simple, poetic words describe what goes on until the boy returns home with "enough happy / to last me one week." The separation is here as well as the joy, and Tadgell's exuberant watercolors show the family bonds, the longing, and the love. Courtni C. Wright's Jumping the Broom is an excellent story, not only for children but adults as well. It gives children of all ages knowledge of how weddings can differ across cultures and across time. I found the book so throughly enjoyable that I mailed it to my older sister as a wedding gift!

Storytime Activities

I have a fine motor art time every day for my special education students. This book gave me many useful activities that I could use as is or adapt for my students. I love pairing stories and songs with art projects to increase literacy. This book provides examples and ideas that are easy to use. When a sub is coming to fill in for a day, these are perfect to add to the lesson plan.

Disappointed

I am a huge fan of the first Quilts from the Quiltmaker's Gift publication. I loved the book and have made three quilts that were inspired from the patterns found there. This sequel, More Quilts from the Quiltmaker's Gift is inferior on nearly every level. The patterns are not so interesting, and seem more fussy and complex. In addition, in this sequel publication, the patterns are not rated by level of difficulty, which I believe is a detriment. Finally, the actual quality of the book is not good. Within a day of bringing it home from the store, the cover of the book had curled up like a wood shaving! I think the authors would have done well to stick with the same publisher who put out their first effort. About the only good things I can say about the book is that the instructions seem clear and the photos of other color options are helpful.

I loved the first book, Quilts from the Quiltmaker's Gift, so I just had to have this second book. And I wasn't disappointed! The book is a delight to look at and the quilts are an inspiration. I love that each pattern gives two or more optional design and colour choices. And the fabric requirements and quilt layouts are easily understood and followed. I look forward to making several quilts from the ideas in this book.

This book is even better than the first! The quilts are gorgeous, the instructions easy. I've make many of the quilts from the first book and can't wait to start with these quilts. Includes many quilting techniques, including foundation peicing. A good book for beginners to the advanced quilter.

Excellent!

This is my second favorite Scooby-Doo story of all time. I don't know why, but there's something about Scooby-Doo and the Dance Club Curse that makes me enjoy it so much. The writing's good, the setting's good, and the drawings are good.

Since "Book" isn't a very good description, I'll give you the description from the back of the book. "When Scooby-Doo and Shaggy get a gig as DJs in a local dance club, the gang is super-psyched. "Scoob-Doggy-Dogg and Baggy" are a hit! But as Scooby spins the tunes, a three-headed figure appears and puts a spellbinding trance of the crowd. Now it's up to Scooby and the gang to track this hypnotic villain before it strikes again! Yikes! Can Scooby and his friends save the music?"

Overall, I love this book and I'd recommend it to any Scooby fan.

Now MacDonald uses her acute sense of design and whimsy to introduce another generation to Lear's work. Children will delight in the zany lyrics that, for full effect, should be read aloud and repeated by a young audience. The illustrations are folksy paper collages–think Eric Carle–with large, bright shapes. A perfect match for Lear's sheer daring, MacDonald's art sometimes spills across the margin of one page onto the next while making connections between one verse and the one on the opposing page. Opening the series of rhymes are A on one page, and B on the other; however, the illustration communicates something of both letters as a large Bear bends over to take a sniff of A's Apple Pie. Caldecott Honor artist MacDonald has adapted and illustrated Edward Lear's beloved 1871 nonsensical alphabet.This engaging read-aloud is certainly fun; Lear's adapted jolly singsong alphabet goes Technicolor with Eric Carle-style cut paper collage illustrations, mostly of friendly-looking animals. Unfortunately, however, some of the oomph has been extracted from the wonderfully quirky, time-tested poem. The Great King Xerxes entry, so mighty and intriguing in the original, is replaced by a more milquetoast rhyme about an ox (and no, ox is does not start with x.) Cat replaces Lear's cake with a string of adjectives (catty, batty, matty, catty) instead of the clever, action-oriented "caky / baky / maky / caky / taky / caky, Little-cake!" Pump replaces pig, unicorn replaces ur n, and zebra replaces zinc, as if children won't be intrigued by objects they may have never seen. Poetry purists, reach instead for Vladimir Radunsky's An Edward Lear Alphabet. Nonpurist book lovers and preschool storytime readers, embrace this colorful introduction to Lear's classic poem. A was once an apple pie

This book covers the alphabet with lyrical poems for each letter and fun illustrations. Some choices for words won't be the best for children who don't read yet, like Lark for L (which looks like a bird and makes me think B) but the overall sing song nature of the text and lovely illustrations will engage many young readers and listeners.

Great Timesaver!

I always search for poems that reinforce the sight words we introduce and this does just that. I type and put it in their homework notebooks to work with for the week. Although I have quite a collection of poems I have used, this has been a nice addition and saves time when looking for support of specific words. I have not used the pages as they are written, to have children write the word in the spaces, but I'm sure others would find it useful. I have purchased way too many teaching resource books that go unused but this one is well worth the price! Great for kindergarten and grade 1!

I feel like it is a little too easy for my students. It is definately for young students. My students seem to get a little board with the repitition of the same word. It just wasn't what I expected.

Great for night time fears

My six year old son enjoys Ready, Freddy! but I was hesitant to purchase this title because I was afraid it would cause nightmares. To my delight, quite the opposite happened after we read it. Freddy tries different ways to stop his nightmares and, in the end, he discovers the Dream Police. The police are three of his stuffed animals. My son loved this and now brings his Dream Police to bed and has not had any night time fears since.
